About the Organizer

Preamble

The Institution of Engineers (India), Delhi State Centre

The Institution of Engineering & Technology

The Institution of Engineers (India) has more than one

million members in 15 engineering disciplines in 114

centers or chapters in India and overseas; it is the

world's largest multi-disciplinary engineering

professional society in engineering and technology

world. IEI was established in 1920 in Madras with Sir

Thomas R.J. Ward as the founding president. In 1935,

IEI obtained the Royal Charter of Incorporation from

King George V 'to promote and advance the science,

practice and business of engineering', The Institution

of Engineers (India) is acclaimed to have pioneered

non-formal education in engineering.

Delhi State Centre has a history of more than 88 years.

Located at ITO, it is a landmark in the city of Delhi. It

has played a crucial role in uniting various

professional societies right from its inception. Delhi

State Centre has organized various successful

activities which include International and National

Conferences, Indian Engineering Congress, "All India

Seminars, Round Table Conferences and Workshops

relating to different strategy of engineering and

having crucial impact on society".

Members of various Engineering Divisions of IEI,

Senior Level Officers from Govt. Departments &

Research Institutes, PSUs and related agencies,

involved in policy & decision making, Researchers/

Academics, NGOs & Students in general are expected

to be the participants and would be benefitted from

the presentations to be made by the experts in the

field.

The IET is one of the world's leading professional

societies for the engineering and technology

community, with more than 150,000 members in 127

countries and offices in Europe, North America and

Asia-Pacific. The IET provides a global knowledge

network to facilitate the exchange of ideas and

promote the positive role of science, engineering and

technology in the world.

City transport system needs a specialized and

customized approach to suit conditions of roads and

cities in India. The city roads are narrow, congested

and invariably encroached on both edges of the roads.

The hill roads are also narrow. The operation of wide

body buss poses several problems. Moreover, the

speed can rarely exceed 40/50 kph. Besides, fuel

consumption also increase more than 50% of the

designed mileage. The busses for Indian roads (City &

Hilly roads) should be designed with semi low floor

and width of about 2.2 meters. However, wide body

buses with trailer and a width of about 2.5/2.6 meter

wide can be operated in the central dedicated lanes of

Delhi Ring Road. Besides, trams can also be used on

dedicated lanes in the Walled City of Old Delhi. The

power for such trailer coaches can be drawn from

overhead traction wire.

The electric buses which are indigenously designed,

developed and built; can substantially improve the

economy of the whole system and increase the overall

life from 10 years to about 30 years. Except the chassis

of trams, all types and sizes are indigenously

available. The electric propulsion can also be added to

the cars and standard pedal driven Cycle Rickshaws.

Similar technology is being adapted abroad to convert

IC Engine cars into Battery Cars. Similar technology

can also be economically applied for Military Vehicles

which are being operated in Hilly terrain.

It is recommended that by 2030, the entire city

transport network should be based upon Electrical

system. The technology for Battery-Electric

Propulsion system was Developed about 15 years ago

at IIT, Delhi by Prof (Emeritus) R. Arokiasamy. By

using indigenous equipment incorporated in a Tata

Bus Chassis, the bus was operated within the

Campus. Further improvement can always take place

using latest equipment. The indigenously developed

technology and capacity offers a cost effective short

gestation solution without depending upon China.

There are about half a million buses including those

which are over 10 years old; which can be converted in

phases. There are several possible cost effective short

gestation options available for conversion of old

busses and assembly of new busses based upon

electric propulsion system.
