For math, students are grouped at the beginning of every unit based on pretest performance. They will be in either the enrichment, grade level or extra practice group. Teachers will rotate as well. We will begin grouping with Unit 2.

For content instruction, students will move from classroom to classroom. Mrs. Strout will teach Science, Mrs. Kling will teach PSSA/Health and Mrs.Carney will teach Social Studies. Students will receive instruction in each content area 2 times per week. See schedule for rotation.

Within our classroom, students will be grouped for part of the language arts instruction. We will do whole group instruction for English and the reading anthology story. Students will be grouped for leveled reader instruction into above level, on level, and below level groups. Spelling lists will be individually differentiated based on pretest performance.

Spelling tests will not always be on Fridays. Check the homework page, the calendar on my website or your child’s agenda for the date of the test.

For monitoring of individual behavior, we use a check mark system. 1st Warning - The first time we have to address a behavior with a child, his/her name will go on the board as a warning.

2nd Warning – The second time inappropriate behavior is addressed, a check mark is placed beside the name and the student will walk laps for 10 minutes.

3rd Warning – The third time inappropriate behavior is addressed, a second check mark is placed beside the name and the student stay in from recess to complete an activity correlating to the curriculum.

**Some behavioral offenses warrant automatic loss of recess or more stringent disciplinary measures.

For a class reward, students will play a version of Lingo. On a chart numbered 1-25, the class will choose a number when receiving a compliment. When Lingo is achieved, the class will receive a predetermined amount a minutes for free time.

Individuals will be reinforced with tickets given randomly for top notch work or model behavior. Students can save tickets to be redeemed for incentives.

Students will always be rewarded with the knowledge that they have done their best work.

•Homework is an important follow-up for the work we do throughout the day. It is designed to reinforce concepts introduced in the classroom.

•The 5th Grade homework policy is as follows:

•If a child misses a homework, he/she will be issued a homework slip that needs to be signed and returned along with the homework the following day.

•Supporting your child with homework is encouraged; however, homework needs to be done in your child’s writing.

•Once 3 homework slips have been issued, students will be assigned a detention.

•Detention may also be assigned when the child has an accumulation of any combination of 3 homework slips and conduct forms.

Please support your child with homework completion. Students

should not rush to complete homework, just to say it is done! Please encourage

him/her to do his/her best work!
