Artist Statement + About PEN

As a designer interested in the exchange of information and cross disciplinary studies for innovation I believe that there needs to be an outlet for people with specific skill sets, professional or personal, to share ideas, collaborate and work with people of different backgrounds. I believe that in today’s quickly changing world the opportunity to travel, experience the world and participate in interesting programs such as partnerships, fellowships and work abroad are extremely desirable. However, with economic pressures driving work, we expect financial awards for productivity and tend to forget about the importance and gratification of self-exploration and growth.

As a student, soon graduating from Parsons School of Design, the prospects of going out into the real world, finding a paid job or internship are very real and quite intimidating. Realizing that many students are in the same position I would like to offer them an opportunity to expand their knowledge into different fields, work on interesting projects, and use skills that were not only learned in school but also enjoyed outside for free! Of course, people of any age looking for a life or career change, working vacation, or to develop a new network can reap this benefit.

By exchanging time and skills for non-monetary rewards and stipends the world can become a more friendly, innovative and connected place. No longer will the pressures of financial stability be the only driver of productivity. Positive interactions between people of different skillsets and working styles during exciting and versatile projects will take a new seat in changing how the world works.

The methods I have employed to accomplish this goal include the development of a new online database of work opportunities and skilled people who can be matched to one another. The match will be determined on specific personality types that work best together, qualifications and level of skills that apply to the opportunity. It is essentially an interface that removes the middle step of a hardcore search of possible candidates and possible work opportunities. The simplification of this process will be welcomed by both parties allowing them to engage in conversation, communicate their goals and needs and embark on their exchange as soon as possible.

Process + Documentation

The process for product development included online research of sign in forms existing on sites like match.com and linkedin.com. These precedents helped influence the overall design of PEN.

Additionally I did my own user evaluations with card sorting and experimentation with my prototype.

The following pages demonstrate this process and my results and findings can be seen within the final project, the launch and distribution of PEN.

Process : Logo Kristie DeLouise : Thesis 2 : April 2013

Process + Documentation

While developing the logo for PEN I determimed that the website would benefit from an icon of the acronym (Professional Exchange Network) rather than a representative symbol. The symbol used for social networks and apps should also be realized through the “P” of PEN.

I experimented with hand drawn renditions of the letters and then digitalized them to find the most effective combination of letter types. Below are a few sheets of hand drawn logos that appealed to me and my audience.
