Why not June 12?

Didn’t we proclaim independence on that date with our Acta de Independencia?

What the Aguinaldo Government proclaimed was the shift of allegiance from one colonial master to another. Severance of ties with Spain and declaration of dependence on protection from the United States of America.

That desire was more clearly signified much more clearly by many events in our history that did not include expressions negating such intentions like the “protectorate” sense of the Kawit proclamation of June 12, 1898!

April 1521: There was still no concept of nationhood when the Spanish conquistadores came to claim our entire archi-pelago wholly as a real property of the monarchy of Spain. But Lapu-Lapu’s unequivocal assertion of the desire to be free of foreign meddling and domination sent the Magellan Expedition back to Spain without its head, and postponed for 44 years our colonization by Spain. April 12, 1895: More than one full year before the Outbreak of the the Philippine Revolution, members of the Katipunan inside the Pamitinan Cave in Montalban, performed the solemn Katipunan rituals and proceeded to cry out the slogan “Mabuhay ang Kasarinlan ng Pilipinas!!!” and with charcoal in hand, wrote that slogan on the cave wall. It was the real “First Cry” of the Revolution that birthed our nation-hood. Unlike the declaration in Kawit, it was unequivocal.

August 24, 1896: At the outbreak of the Philippine Revolu-tion, the Katipunan transformed itself into a government called “Haring Bayang Katagalugan” with a President and a Cabinet; declared war against Spain; and commissioned a revolutionary army which defeated Spanish control of the islands in two years. The formation of this first Filipino state with presence in the entire archipelago was the clearest indication of the will to assert Philippine sovereignty.

THE NEAREST THING TO A PROPER INDEPENDENCE DAY AFTER SPANISH COLONIZATION WAS JANUARY 23, 1899.

On that day, the inauguration ot the Republic of the Philippines in Malolos, Spanish rule had really been dismantled throughout the archipelago.

Mabini had succeeded to remove any sign of depend-ence on Americans; by that time, even Aguinaldo had seen through the colonial scheme of the U.S. regime.

Our sovereign republic, the first in Asia, was crushed by the U.S. invasion of our country beginning February 4, 1899.

Why not July 4?

Didn’t we regain our independence after on that day after the U.S.A. returned what it stole from us at the turn of the century?

No. What the U.S.A. did was shift from direct colonialism to an indirect one, where Filipino politicians would be in the Palace and Con-gress while U.S. policy would still dominate our economy, politics, military and culture.

We have remained under indirect but effective American colonial domination.

No celebration of any official date, even without tampering of date of celebration, on any which date, can create the reality of Philippine independence. We need to really be independent to deserve to have an INDEPENDENCE DAY. Sa totoo lang!
