In Tune and On Time Stanton’s Band Shines at the Solo Festival
Andy Rabe
Percussion
Last month, band students across northern Illinois attended the annual Solo and Ensemble festival in Wauconda. Students worked for 2 months preparing a solo that they performed in front of a judge, and ultimately graded on their performance. Students were given 7 minutes to perform their scales, solo, and receive comments on from the adjudicator. Each student
who attended the festival received a medal, and their rank (gold, silver or bronze) was based upon 8 different criteria, such as correct notes/rhythms, pitch, intonation, and musicality. Band Director, Ms. Walker added, “This is not a required event, so I am so proud of each student's success who could go this year, and appreciate all their hard work and dedication.” Band
students who participated were: Thomas Holt - Alto Saxophone – silver, Andrew Rabe -- Percussion (he did two solos, Bells and Snare) - two golds, Brandon Bartels - Flute – silver, Isabel Dominuqez - Flute – silver, Kelsey Franz - Flute
– silver, Amber Martin - Trombone – silver, Kelsey and Amber - Flute/Trombone duet – silver.

Got Used Markers? Color Cycle It!
Instead of throwing away your old dried up markers, drop them in the box near the school office. NJHS is
collecting markers as a part of the Crayola Color Cycle. Crayola Color Cycle recycles the markers and turns them
into fuel. Any type of markers are accepted including Sharpies,
Crayola, and Prismacolor.

Illinois Assessment of Readiness Testing Window: April 1-26
Fox Lake Grade School District 114’s students in grades 3-8 take federally
required assessments every spring. These assessments help us understand
how our students are growing academically, compared to their peers across the
state. The state uses this information to provide more support and resources
to the schools in the greatest need.
You can help your student do their best by:
Making sure your child is in each day and arrive on time.
Promoting strong school habits.
Encouraging them to get a good night’s sleep and eat a healthy
breakfast and lunch.
Remaining positive.

Mr. Thorsen
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Welcome Mr. Thorsen to the Stanton Family. Mr. Thorsen is filling
Ms. Soderstrom’s 6th grade position for the remainder of the year.
He received his Bachelor’s degree from the University of Wisconsin-
Whitewater and his Master’s degree in Teaching from Western
Governors University. He completed his student teaching at Gavin
South. We are excited to have Mr. Thorsen at Stanton.
Stanton Makes History at the History Museum
It was a long time in the works, but it was well
worth the wait. Stanton’s 5th grade students were
the first ever school group to pay a visit to the Fox
Lake-Grant Township Area Historical Society
Museum. The students had the opportunity to
spend a couple hours discovering and learning the
rich and colorful history of this great town.
Mr. Sefcik joined the students, and said, “It was
such a great experience. I loved watching our
students connecting with members of our
community and our community members
connecting with our students. Mr. Jakstas and the
docents did a wonderful job teaching our kids the
history of the community. The kids had a great
time learning and their excitement was evident”.
The museum is located at 411 Washington Street
in Ingleside. Stop by if you get a chance!

Check out this interesting article on screen time for kids.
New research aimed at understanding the impact of screen time and social media on adolescent brains found in early testing significant differences in brain chemistry for kids who had at least seven hours of screen time a day, compared to kids who used screens less. On "60 Minutes," contributor Anderson Cooper explored the National Institutes of Health study, which is following more than 11,000 children over a decade.
Psychologist and CBS News contributor Lisa Damour explained that the appeal of social media is "incredibly compelling."
"We know it triggers the reward centers in the brain. And this is true for grownups too, not teenagers and kids," Damour said Monday on "CBS This Morning." "We also know that digital technology disrupts things that are important for healthy development — so sleep, one-on-one interactions that are face-to-face, learning how to focus on one's schoolwork, physical activity. So we should already start to be drawing some lines
around digital technology, just to protect normal and healthy development."
While experts have offered a variety of guidelines for screen time, Damour, who wrote the bestselling book, "Untangled: Guiding Teenage Girls through the Seven Transitions into Adulthood," recommended parents prioritize what they are trying to protect.
"So we're trying to protect sleep. We are trying to protect family time. We are trying to protect focus. So I think the guidelines should flow from there," she said. "Children need a lot more sleep than people appreciate. Elementary school children need 11 hours a night, middle schoolers need 10 hours a night. High schoolers need 9 hours a night.
So if we even do that, that's one heck of a guideline."
The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends avoiding screen time other than video chatting for children younger than 18 months. For children between 2 to 5 years old, the group recommends limiting screen time to one hour per day with "high-quality programs."
On February 12, Damour is releasing her latest book, "Under Pressure: Confronting the Epidemic of Stress and Anxiety in Girls." She said causal data does not exist on how social media contributes to anxiety and depression, "but what we do have are some longitudinal studies that have actually looked at the trajectory through sleep."
She explained, "When high schoolers get phones that disrupt their sleep, subsequent they go on to have higher rates of depression, higher rates of emotional fragility."
Social media is just one element of the "broad scope" of factors parents need to consider that may be causing stress and anxiety for kids, she said. © 2018 CBS Interactive Inc. All Rights Reserved. tanton’s Choir, along with their director, Ms. Connelly-Jordt have been busy singing their way through town. The first stop was at Grant Community High School last month when they performed at the Music in Our Schools concert. According to Ms. Connelly-Jordt, “I couldn’t be more proud of our kids. They committed to learning difficult pieces of music and did a tremendous job. They represented Stanton in a first class way”. The annual MIOS concert features choir and band students from Grant’s feeder schools who come together and perform as one. It is truly a remarkable event. The choir’s next stop was the Lakefront Park Building where they performed at the senior luncheon. During their stop, they had the opportunity to meet Fox Lake’s Mayor, Mr. Schmit and Congressman Brad Schmidt. Once again, the choir did an outstanding job. You can catch their final concert of the year on May 7 at 6:30 at Lotus.
