On CallEast District Teams Up to Clean Up

Father Fest

On April 27, members of the Hispanic Citizen Police Academy Association and citizens in the community teamed up to clean up in Marrow Bone Springs and Vandergriff Park.

The East District Spring Community Clean-Up sustainability project was started in 2018 in hopes of the sur-rounding community coming together to take care of and show pride for their parks.

The support received from the com-munity, as well as the department, made the event a great success. Many community members who were out enjoying the parks on the day of the clean-up were very happy to see Sergeant Robert Robertson and Offi cers Jeremy Lee, Leonard Moon, Jesse Minton, and Marisa Sandham and citizens coming together to make the parks a cleaner and more pleasant place for everyone.

Also, many citizens inquired about volunteering with next year’s spring clean-up and asked about other volunteering opportunities within the police department. The cleanup showed how much of an impact a small group of offi cers and volun-teers can make on the rest of the community.

This month, the South District took part in Father Fest Arlington 2019. The event was held at Bowie High School and is the largest festival in Arlington celebrating fatherhood and families, highlighting the important role father’s and father fi gures play in a child’s success.

There were many activities for everyone in the family, including face painting, sporting events, free food, and live music.

The Arlington Police and Fire Departments gave safety presenta-tions and gave children the opportunity to explore vehicles and apparatus from each department.

It was a wonderful opportunity to cele-brate all the fathers in attendance.

On CallRemembering Clint Dobson

ACAPP Class 13 Graduates

On Saturday, April 27th ACAPP (Arlington Clergy and Police Partnership) held the annual “Clint Dobson Memorial.” Clint Dobson was a member of ACAPP and a graduate of class #1. His life was taken in his Arlington church in March of 2011.

The memorial was held at River Legacy Park next to the tree that was pur-chased by ACAPP years prior . His mother, Sharon, and sister, Sarah, were there for the ceremony. Also in the church on that tragic day in March of 2011 was Judy Elliot, who was assaulted. She survived and joins in each year to remember Clint.

During the ceremony, the annual “Clint Dobson Award” was presented to Rev. Annqunett Chapman for her hard work and for being a dedicated ACAPP member.

Clint believed in clean drinking water for people. He traveled out of the country and assisted in making drinking wells. This year, water bottles with Clint’s picture were handed out to those walking and running in the park as a way of spreading Clint’s love to others.

On May 9, the 13th Arlington Clergy and Police Partnership (ACAPP) class graduated and are ready to serve the police and citizens of Arlington.

ACAPP is a coalition of Clergy from every faith and denomination who partner with the Arlington Police Department. ACAPP members and their organizations are called upon to pray for the police department members, build relationships with police offi cers and other governmental offi cials, and to be available for various situations involving our community.

They provide calm in crisis situations, conduct bible study in jail ministry and relay factual information back to residents.

To become a member of the ACAPP, participants are required to be a leader in an established religion and attend an academy to learn about police relations.

For more information on how become a member, visit https://arlingtontx.gov/city_hall/departments/police/police_volunteer

Arlington Police History on Display

The Hawkes Library is currently hosting a display of some of the department’s memo-rabilia in the front lobby. The display includes items such as the fi rst radar, the fi rst camera used for book-in photos, and a motorcycle remembering fallen offi cers.

Chaplain Harold Elliott, after becoming the Arlington Police Department’s fi rst chaplain, began collecting police department memo-rabilia that he felt was too important to throw away. He created a small museum in 1989 that was housed in a room at the main station. The museum eventually out grew the one room and, in March of 2007, was moved to the Police Training Center.

Now, some of the collection is available for the community to view and learn about the history of the department.
