Dear Friends,

On behalf of the Central Bucks Chamber of Commerce, we are pleased to present you with the 2019 Bucks Fever – Celebration of the Arts brochure. Over four decades ago, Bucks Fever was conceived by Chamber members to “Support the Arts through Business.” What started as a small handful of arts events over a short period of time has grown to include 9 major Chamber arts events and well over 400 community wide celebrations of the arts over a 10-month period.

By uniting the business, arts and cultural community, the Chamber has synthesized the very best of Bucks County in order to increase tourism, augment the economic vitality of the region and celebrate the community’s rich, artistic and cultural heritage. Bucks Fever is solely supported by the business community and we thank all of the Benefactors and Patrons for their generous support. Their commitment enables us to give you this publication free of charge and to promote hundreds of arts and cultural events at no-cost to the host organizations. In addition, we distribute nearly 30,000 copies of this “in demand” publication

to local businesses, individuals and tourists visiting Bucks County.

We invite you, and those you know, to “Celebrate the Arts” by participating in the many events throughout the Bucks Fever season. Your participation enables the Chamber and the many organizations promoted in this brochure to continue the rich artistic and cultural legacy in our community for many years to come!

Wednesday, March 27History of Blooming GlenBlooming Glen in Hilltown Township is a prime example of a farming village that dotted America. Robert Moyer, 5th generation owner of Blooming Glen Pork, will share his experiences as a life-long resident of the village, growing up in the 1940s, 50s, and 60s. His family has run Blooming Glen Pork since the 1850s. Learn how Blooming Glen had a general store, butcher, schools, churches, factories and doctor, so that residents “didn’t have to leave town”. It was a self-sufficient community and the village provided services to local farming families. Historical photographs and artifacts of Blooming Glen will be used to enhance Mr. Moyer’s presentation. Friday, March 22-24The Odyssey ExhibitionThe Pennsylvania Center for Photography’s AMERICANA Exhibition, which had grown into one of the Northeast’s premier photographic shows, is being morphed into the more inclusive ODYSSEY Exhibition.

Whether your photographic journeys take you to the farthest places on earth or into the farthest places in your mind, the Pennsylvania Center for Photography’s ODYSSEY Exhibition is for you. It is totally open, no underlying theme, no restrictions on subject (except for overt sexuality and animal cruelty), just your best photography.

The concept is simple. We want to exhibit the most visually compelling images possible and to acknowledge the photographers who create them. To do so, The ODYSSEY Exhibition will once again feature the PCP’s hallmark combination of separate print and digital exhibitions, so those who are too far away to deliver framed prints can have their excellent work recognized and displayed. Historically, exhibitions at the PCP have drawn unique images from around the world and The ODYSSEY Exhibition promises to be even more diverse!

Wednesday, April 24Sterner’s Mill, Bucks CountyJ. Thomas Brown lived as a boy at Sterner’s Mill. His home was taken by eminent domain and demolished to create Nockamixon State Park. The mill now lies below the surface, along with the remains of covered bridges, stone farmhouses, settler’s graves, and the Indian Cave. Mr. Brown will talk about the research and history behind the writing of his historical fiction, “The Land of Three Houses”, set in the 1790s in the Tohickon Valley at Sterner’s Mill. The abundant water power of Bucks County powered gristmills, sawmills, and industries that grew the country. Friday, May 24-26Love & Merger - A Play of the Scandalous TypeMeet the Town Council of Regal South Carolina. There’s the not-so-bright high school gym teacher, the savvy yet underappreciated interior designer, the overly genteel & highly self-confident restaurant owner, the totally self-absorbed builder, the annoying yet successful-in-her-own-mind real estate agent, the ‘’upstanding’’ lawyer (in his dreams) and the fun & lovable if a tad naive rug salesman originally from Pakistan.

The town is going bankrupt! Suddenly, the town founder dies of old age and leaves his sizable estate to the town for its future security. This greedy little group of council members set out to line their own pockets while thinking they’re hiding their activities from the town. While this is going on, there’s a “secret” romance brewing which, in the end, leaves everyone stunned when they find out who it is.

Will the town figure it out? Will the council go to jail? Who will be falling in love?

It’s a wild ride as Regal South Carolina finds its way from obscurity to security in this funny, witty and warm comedy by local playwrights, Judith Sapperstein & Gary Murway.

Friday, August 30 – Sept 1The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged) – A ComedyHow on earth can three men do the impossible: act through Shakespeare’s entire canon of 37 plays in 97 minutes? By summarizing the canon through football plays, rap songs, and outrageously condensed, comedy mash-up titles of course! The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged) hilariously summarizes all of Shakespeare’s plays, using reenactments and audience participation. It is famous for holding the (self-proclaimed) record for the shortest production of Hamlet at 43 seconds. The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged) entertains and teaches audiences facts about Shakespeare while ensuring them a rollicking good time.

Wednesday, October 2319th Century Monuments and the Stories of the People Under ThemVictorian Society in the mid to late 19th century took their mourning very seriously, following the example of Great Britain’s Queen Victoria, who very publicly mourned the death of her husband, Prince Albert, for the 50 years she outlived him. Victorians draped portraits of the deceased with black crepe and dressed in black clothing. They started the custom of laying out the deceased in the parlor for several days, strewing the room with flowers to mask the smell of decay. They also started the rural cemetery movement, creating spiritually soothing outdoor places of permanent repose for their loved ones. Ms. Tammy Schane will highlight over two dozen unique monuments, which tell a story through sculpture about the life of the deceased and the loss felt by those left behind.

Friday, November 8-10 A Christmas Story – A Family PlayHumorist Jean Shepherd’s memoir of growing up in the Midwest in the 1940s follows 9-year-old Ralphie Parker in his quest to get a genuine Red Ryder BB gun under the tree for Christmas. Ralphie pleads his case before his mother, his teacher and even Santa Claus himself, at Higbee’s Department Store. The consistent response: “You’ll shoot your eye out!” All the elements from the beloved motion picture are here, including the family’s temperamental exploding furnace; Scut Farkas, the school bully; the boys’ experiment with a wet tongue on a cold lamppost; the Little Orphan Annie decoder pin; Ralphie’s father winning a lamp shaped like a woman’s leg in a net stocking; Ralphie’s fantasy scenarios and more. A Christmas Story is a theatrical holiday perennial.
