Then and NowBefore we turn our attention to the Olympic Games in Rio, WGBH’s American Experience takes us to 1936 Berlin to tell the underdog story of the University of Washington crew team that captured gold.

Inspired by The Boys in the Boat, Daniel James Brown’s critically acclaimed bestseller, The Boys of ’36 (page 10) recounts how the sons of loggers, ship-yard workers and farmers overcame multiple hardships to best their Ivy

League competition at home, and Adolf Hitler’s elite German rowers abroad. Their unexpected victory gave hope to a nation struggling to emerge from the depths of the Great Depression.

“The Boys of ’36 is powerfully uplifting,” says Mark Samels, executive producer of American Experience. “These remarkable young men—with nothing more than strength of character, hard work and determination—triumphed over

unimaginable odds. We’re proud to bring this story, so vividly told in Brown’s book, to our audience.” The film anchors a series of programs focusing on the Olympics, from a look at the evolution of the modern Games (page 9), to a young woman’s quest to win gold again (page 10).

The race for 2016 Olympic glory will be unfold-ing as the race for the White House heads into the home stretch. With that in mind, American Experience is dip-ping into its award-winning collection of presidential biographies for a series of special encore presentations, beginning with its two-part JFK documentary and continuing through George H.W. Bush (page 13). “Presidents both shape and are shaped by their eras,” Samels says, “and the context of what is going on in America and what is going on in the White House can form a complete historical picture.” That picture can reveal lessons that link our shared past to our present.

“At a time when we’re so intensely focused on the now, American Experience reminds us that sifting through the past allows us to find meaning in where we’ve come from—and in our lives today,” Samels says.

Keeping history alive in a considered, compelling, and relevant way, American Experience is TV’s most-watched history series—thanks to your generous annual support.

Doubly OddThis month Odd Squad pairs the casts of Seasons One and Two in a new feature-length movie. When a rival group of adults called Weird Team arrives with a gadget that fixes any odd problem, Odd Squad is run out of business. The agents are forced to disband and return to life as regular kids, but they soon learn that the gadget isn’t solving problems, it’s just covering them up! The original Odd Squad, Olive and Otto, join up with the new agents, Olympia and Otis. Together, they use math and teamwork to disprove Weird Team and prevent rampant oddness. Follow IrisEnter the world of Iris Apfel, the quick-witted, flamboyantly dressed 93-year-old style maven who has had an outsized presence on the New York fashion scene for decades. More than a fashion film, this POV documentary is a story about creativity and how a free spirit continues to inspire. Iris portrays a singular woman whose enthusiasm for fashion, art and people are her sustenance. She reminds us that dressing—and indeed, life—is nothing but a grand experiment. “If you’re lucky enough to do something you love,” she says, “everything else follows.” POV/IrisMon, 8/1 at 10pm on WGBH 2

Time Will TellWhat happens to the values of items as the years go by? That’s the question that Antiques Roadshow’s Vintage specials explore, and this month the series returns to three cities to see how the values of noteworthy appraisals have evolved. In New Orleans, Roadshow reassess an 1858 map of lower Mississippi and a 1955 Brooklyn Dodgers World Series ball. San Diego treasures include a Dr. Seuss “Kangaroo Bird” and a 1781 George Washington lifetime print. And in Miami, the value of one of the featured items—a John Lehman stoneware jug from around 1870, a 34-Star Civil War flag, or a René Portocarrero painting, ca. 1958—soars to $125,000. The Olympic SpectacleDespite the modern Olympic Games being “revived” in 1896 in Athens, the Games as we have come to know them were shaped by the collab-oration of interests between the Nazis and the International Olympic Committee in Berlin in 1936. See how they turned, to their mutual advantage, a relatively small, elitist sports event into an epic global and mass media spectacle. Today the grand themes from the 1936 Games are repeated with every quadrennial reprise: architectural grandiosity, catastrophic budget overruns, corruption, bribery, collusion with unsavory characters—including dictators and autocrats. The Nazi Games – Berlin 1936Tue, 8/2 at 8pm on WGBH 2

Underdog StoryIn 1936, nine working-class young men from the University of Washington took the rowing world and the nation by storm, when their eight-oar crew team captured the gold medal at the Olympics in Berlin. These sons of loggers, shipyard workers and farmers overcame

tremendous hardships—psychological, physical, economic—to earn an unexpected victory, captivating a nation struggling to emerge from the depths of the Depression. Inspired by the critically acclaimed bestseller The Boys in the Boat by Daniel James Brown, this film recounts their remarkable journey.

Going for (More) GoldClaressa “T-Rex” Shields, a 17-year-old from Flint, Michigan, won the gold medal in women’s boxing at the 2012 Olympics —the first time women were allowed to box in the Olympic Games. Her journey from the streets of Flint to the top of the podium in London was both epic and historic. Now with a record of 69-1, she is ranked number one in the world heading

into her second Olympic competition, the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Summer Games. But this film isn’t just the story of sports heroics; it’s also a coming-of-age tale about a young girl whose resilience is tested again and again as she survives and thrives in a place fraught with negativity and dysfunction. The Koko ExperimentIt’s been more than 40 years since Koko, the only “talking” gorilla in the world, captivated the public with her uncanny ability to communi-cate with humans. Her unique life, which she continues to share with Penny Patterson, the psychologist who adopted her as a baby, is revisited in this new documentary. Koko has been filmed every step of the way—more than 2,000 hours of footage exists. The film chronicles

the dramatic moments, including Penny’s battle to keep Koko from being reclaimed by the zoo where she was born. What can we learn from this extraordinary science experiment? Does it tell us more about animals’ emotions or our own?Koko – The Gorilla Who TalksWed, 8/3 at 8pm on WGBH 2

Having mentored the likes of Julia Child,

James Beard and Alice Waters in the 1960s, she today con-tinues to influence a new gen-eration of chefs who invite her into their kitchens to recreate some of her signature dishes. Get a taste of her amazing story on the premiere episode of her new series.

Bringing You the WorldThe World Channel offers the best of PBS news and nonfiction programming, along with exclusive series like AfroPop, Global Voices, Voces and Pacific Heartbeat. World also produces such original series as Local, USA, featuring diverse stories culled from

public television stations and independent producers nationwide, and the award-winning America ReFramed, a showcase for independent films by and about communities of difference. This month, our Your Vote 2016 programming continues, with films that focus on key current-day issues or take a look back at elections (and presidents) past.

Hope Amid HardshipSeven years in the making, this award-winning documentary takes you on an intimate journey into the lives of three refugees at a health clinic tucked away in St. Paul, Minnesota. Meet Alex Gliptis, an Ethiopian refugee suffer-ing from PTSD, diabetes and HIV; Thor Lem, a former political prisoner from

Cambodia who survived the killing fields, but is dying from liver cancer; and Patrick Junior, a member of an oppressed ethnic minority in Burma who has written over 200 songs, many of them religious and uplifting. Despite failing health, they lead remarkable lives—their outlook and trajectories surprising even to their doctors.

America ReFramed/American HeartTue, 8/9 at 8pm

Lyndon’s LegacyFifty years after Lyndon Johnson (right) signed two of the most important laws Congress ever passed—the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965—this documentary examines how the president worked behind the scenes to transform America. Those who were closest to him reveal the man behind the office, painting a picture that casts Johnson, who is chiefly remembered today for the disastrous war in Vietnam, in a new light.JFK and LBJ/A Time for GreatnessWed, 8/24 at 9pm

JFK TodayJohn F. Kennedy’s legacy has endured for more than 50 years due to the early efforts of family and friends, as well as through Lyndon Johnson’s “Great Society” programs; Ronald Reagan’s tax cuts and Cold War strate-gies; Bill Clinton’s infatuation with the 35th president; and the “twinning” of JFK and Barack Obama in the 2008 presidential campaign. Based on Larry Sabato’s book, The Kennedy Half-Century looks at the impact and influence of Kennedy’s life, administration and tragic death on the public, the media and every subsequent US president. The Kennedy Half-CenturyThu, 8/25 at 9pm

Game Changer Three-year-old Monique Corzilius counts to 10, pulling petals from a daisy. A voice from mission control then counts down as the camera zooms into Monique’s dark pupil. An atomic blast and ensuing mushroom cloud con-sume the TV screen as President Lyndon Johnson’s voice proclaims “We must either love each other, or we must die.” This political ad, “Peace Little Girl,” aired only once or twice during the 1964 presidential campaign between

Lyndon Johnson and Barry Goldwater, but it ushered in a new era of the television attack ad. Revisit the 1964 campaign and explore the significant ways it reshaped the American political landscape.Bombs Away: LBJ, Goldwater and the 1964 Campaign That Changed It All Fri, 8/26 at 9pm

Confusion ReignsHas there ever been a year like 1968? Assassinations, racial unrest, nation-wide riots and an endless war in Vietnam put the nation on edge and produced a historic three-way presidential election where all the candidates were deeply flawed. American voters faced an unwelcome but unavoidable dilemma: Could they right America’s course, especially with an unsatisfying set of choices in the November election for the White House? Republican Richard Nixon, Democrat Hubert Humphrey, and Independent George Wallace were at the eye of the storm, and in some ways contributed to the intensity of the tempest chronicled in this film. Ball of Confusion: The 1968 ElectionMon, 8/29 at 9pm

World is produced and distributed by WGBH Boston, American Public Television and WNET/New York in association with PBS and the National Educational Telecommunications Association.

89.7 WGBH, Boston’s Local NPR®

26 Schedules, program info, playlists: wgbhnews.org

Bringing Climate Change to the ForefrontWGBH News is working with The GroundTruth Project and PRI’s The World to explore how coastal cities are preparing for rising sea levels and the increas-ingly extreme weather events associated with climate change. The seven-part series, “Rising Tide,” features reporting from the Netherlands, New York City, and Boston’s own Seaport District.

“General Electric’s impending move to Boston has highlighted two important issues that WGBH News has spent a lot of time covering: the effects of global climate change on our coastal city, and the potential impact they may have on our economy,” says Aaron Schachter, executive producer of WGBH News. “It’s more important now than ever to tell these stories.”

The series debuted in June and will continue through August. Find it online at WGBHNews.org.

WGBH News’ First-Ever “Editor in Residence” Ken Cooper, a Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist formerly of The Boston Globe and The Washington Post, joined WGBH News this summer as its first-ever “Editor in Residence.” Cooper is working with the news team, generating

story ideas; sourcing, shaping and editing content; as well as planning, consulting and critiquing stories across WGBH’s radio, television and digital programs.

“Ken is a great addition to our growing newsroom, and we hope that his fellowship will contribute to our never-ending goal of raising the quality of our local journalism,” says Phil Redo, general manager for WGBH

Radio. “His reporting expertise and the stories he covers literally span the globe, and his experience perfectly overlaps the aspirations for WGBH News: locally focused and globally aware.”

Eric in the Evening

Remarkable RahsaanHost Eric Jackson shines the spotlight on a one- of-a-kind talent on what would have been his 81st birthday, the late multi-instrumentalist Rahsaan Roland Kirk (1935–1977). More a bandleader than a sideman, Kirk was renowned for his onstage vitality and versatility. His virtuoso improvisation was accompanied by comic banter, political ranting, and something rare—the ability to play several reed instruments at once.Sun, 8/7 at 9pm

Reporting on Rio WGBH News will offer local perspectives on the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, this month with reports on Morning Edition, All Things Considered, Boston Public Radio, and Greater Boston. Coverage will include interviews with local Olympians and

Paralympians, insights from area health professionals, and commentary from experts in the Boston sports community.

We began in June with a debate about the Zika virus’s impact on safety, featuring Dr. Holly Fernandez-Lynch, executive director of the Petrie-Flom Center for Health Law Policy, Biotechnology, and Bioethics at Harvard University, and Andrew Campbell, a member of the US Rowing team who trains here in Boston and will be competing in Rio. WGBH News’ Craig LeMoult participated in a training session with Campbell later in the month, which he recorded for a radio feature. With You, Wherever You Are By Anthony Rudel 99.5 WCRB Station Manager

It’s August, which means there’s a good chance you’ll be taking a vacation this month. And whether you hit the beach close to home or you hit the road, the good news is now you can enjoy WCRB wherever you are thanks to our new smartphone app for Apple and Android devices.

We want to know where you’re listening. Join us on Instagram using #WhereIListen—our summer-long exploration of where you take WCRB with you in your travels across New England and beyond. Make WCRB the perfect soundtrack to your adventures by downloading our free 24/7 streaming app in the iTunes or Google Play stores. Find it by searching for “Classical Radio Boston.” Then, snap a picture of yourself in your surroundings (or just of your surroundings if you’re shy), and share it on Instagram. We can’t wait to see all the fun places you go! Be in touch often and share your experiences with other devoted listeners.

Since this month is all about the outdoors, I’d be remiss if I didn’t remind you about our final four weekends at Tanglewood. Every summer, WCRB, led by our Senior Producer Brian McCreath and the voice of the Boston

Symphony Orchestra, Ron Della Chiesa, heads to the Berkshires to bring you right inside the Koussevitzky Music Shed for the wonderful and relaxed summertime concerts. This August includes performances by Yefim Bronfman, Emanuel Ax, Charles Dutoit, Kristine Opolais, and BSO Music Director Andris Nelsons. (Highlights are to the right, and the full schedule is on our website, classicalwcrb.org/bso).

Finally, as you savor your summer and the music on WCRB, I’d like to tempt you with this little piece of information: watch this space in September when we will be announcing the creation of a new weekly show on WCRB that will take you on an incredible musical journey. I hope that intrigues you…

In the meantime, keep listening, and keep in touch with #WhereIListen.

See you in September.

whole pain pill-heroin connection seemed to slip under the media’s radar.”In the Murrow-winning radio piece Sean produced for WCAI and WGBH

News, he revisits the problem, contacting old sources and exploring what progress has been made.

“I didn’t know if one of my original sources—a young man named Shawn Harnish—had survived his descent into heroin abuse, or if he even wanted to see me again. But I found his mother’s address and knocked on her door one morning. It was an amazing experience.”

It’s a personal, moving piece that looks at how he (and we in the media) report on the opioid epidemic. The story makes us think about our responsi-bilities as journalists.

“I was nervous about returning to this story,” Sean says. “After reporting that initial newspaper series, I moved on to other projects, but I never stopped worrying about the families I’d met. And I never stopped feeling like we’d lost an opportunity to stop this crisis—or at least slow it down, a decade ago.”

WCAI is proud to recognize the award-winning journalism of our news director Sean Corcoran (left), who recently won a 2016 National Edward R. Murrow Award in the writing category for a piece he produced called 10 Years Later, Reckoning with Opportunities Lost in the Battle Against Opiate Addiction.

Sean’s story looks back at a newspaper series he reported a decade ago, when working at The Salem News. In the series, he detailed a growing opioid problem among young people in North Shore communities, where the abuse

of recreational pills was leading to heroin addiction. The series was the first comprehensive look at what is now known as the “opioid epidemic.”

“I first came across the opiate story in 2004, when I noticed an increasing number of young faces on the obituary pages of The Salem News,” Sean says. “Some reporting revealed that a new heroin crisis was emerging. We went after the story hard. But until fairly recently, the
