GOVERNMENT AND FIFA VISIT CONSTRUCTION WORK
On January 17, the Minister of Sports, Aldo Rebelo, General Secretary of FIFA, Jérôme Valcke,
and the former player and member of the Local World Cup Organizing Committee Board of
Directors, Ronaldo Nazário de Lima, visited the construction work for the Fonte Nova Arena.
Accompanied by the Governor of Bahia, Jaques Wagner, the visitors flew over and walked
through the construction site. According to Aldo Rebelo, Bahia and Salvador are on schedule
and have the capacity to host large events. “The government has no doubt that the city can
meet the expectations surrounding its hosting of the World Cup,” said Rebelo.
Jérôme Valcke summarized the first part of the visit to Brazil, which began in the city
of Fortaleza: “There is no reason to doubt that the stadiums will be delivered for the
Confederations Cup and the World Cup, said Valcke.
The former forward for the Brazilian national team, Ronaldo, spoke to Members of the
construction project and proposed a challenge. “We will create a challenge for the stadiums
that will be ready this year,” he said. “I’ll form my team and play a team formed by the workers

Operating for eight years in the United
Arab Emirates, Odebrecht International
won the contract at the end of 2011
to build the world’s deepest sewage
pumping plant, located in the city of
Abu Dhabi, the country’s capital. The
sanitation project will benefit some three
million inhabitants by 2032.
With investments of US$ 362 million,
the contract is the largest in the history
of the Abu Dhabi Sewage Company
(ADSSC). The construction work for the
sanitary sewage system sewage pumping
plant is set to begin in March of this year,
with an estimated conclusion in March
2015.
According to Paulo Suffredini, Contract
Director, the plant will be located
100 meters deep and have a width
of approximately 50 meters, with the
capacity to pump a final flow of 39 cubic
meters per second. The collected sewage
will be carried along a tunnel, already
being constructed, to two independent

treatment plants that have already been
built in Al Wathba.
The pumping plant will be installed
at the end of the 44-km tunnel and
is designed on a slope, beginning
approximately 25 meters deep and
ending at nearly 100 meters. “The tunnel
will be constructed in this way so that
gravity itself will transport the waste,”
explained Paulo Suffredini.
According to Suffredini, the part of
the project falling under Odebrecht’s
responsibility represents a fourth of the
total investment for the new Abu Dhabi
sanitation project, whose contract value
is approximately US$ 1.4 billion.
The set of facilities formed by the
tunnel and the pumping and treatment
plant, in addition to two deep collection
networks designed to power the system,
is part of the city’s environmental control
plan, proposed to meet the demand
for the expansion of the urban and
industrial network by 2032. The project
also includes the treatment and reuse of
a flow of 15 cubic meters per second of
water for irrigation purposes.
Some 1,000 Members should be
required during the peak of the
construction work. “We are contracting
people every day,” said Suffredini. The
eight pieces of equipment that will be
included during the first phase of the
pumping station work will be supplied
by a Japanese company specialized in
sanitation.

Innovating in Logistics for Transportation Responsible for the
construction of the
Embraport Terminal, located
along the left bank of Santos
Port in the coastal region
of São Paulo, Odebrecht
Infraestrutura has used
some creative solutions for
the project’s logistics.
The highlight is the
transportation of the
piles at the driving fronts,
which represents the dock
foundation cycle. The
phase will allow for the
future mooring of the large
container ships, improving the
position of the Santos Port.
> infrastructure
The Embraport Terminal construction project has already completed 25% of the piles and 10% have already been driven in. The operation began in September of last year and should be completed in October 2012
15odebrechtnoticias.com.br / no. 274 / january 2012
Innovating in Logistics for Transportation Due to the 52-meter length
and 45-ton weight of the
piles used in the project, the
company opted for maritime
transportation. For this
purpose, specialized vessels
were designed and built to
transport the parts.
The difficulty with the
transportation and the large
volume of the parts for
manufacturing – over 2,000
piles and 6,000 reinforced
parts – prompted Odebrecht
to set up a 60,000-m2 factory
with six production lines and
12 gates with the capacity for
35 tons and a 23-meter span.
16 odebrechtnoticias.com.br / no. 274 / january 2012
“The project was adapted
to the challenges and the
environment, seeking out
the conditions to internally
produce the necessary
resources while ensuring
the required quality,” said
Giorgio Bullaty, Production
Manager.
On average, eight piles
are manufactured daily.
After they are produced, the
materials are stored in the
stock area, from where they
are transported to receive
a metal tip measuring up
to nine meters. “Studies
identified different types of
soil in the region, so there was
the need to assemble the tips,
which facilitate the drilling of
the sediment layer,” explained
Henrique Marchesi, Contract
Director.
The maritime
transportation is followed by
the driving process, which was
also modified by the company.
The solution adopted for
the foundations was to use
cantitravellers – large metal
structures that help position
the pile during the driving
process, which takes place
with the assistance of a crane.
According to Amilton
Sendai, Commercial Manager,
one of the advantages of
the cantitravellers is that
they work regardless of
the sea conditions. “We are
transforming a maritime
project into a suspended
one,” revealed Sendai. In order
to avoid the appearance of
> infrastructure
17odebrechtnoticias.com.br / no. 274 / january 2012
cracks and fissures in the pile
during the hoisting process,
the project developed a
device that allows for efficient
and safe lifting.
It is estimated that 350
meters of docks will be
completed in December of
this year, a period in which
other areas of the terminal
will be ready, such as the
800-meter viaduct that passes
over the railroad and the river
and the buildings for entry
into the terminal.
Some 2,000 piles are transported by the docks (to the left), hoisted (to the right) and driven in by three cantitravellers
PROJECT EARNS CERTIFICATION
IN RECORD TIME
The Embraport Terminal was the first Odebrecht
Infraestrutura project to reach the Level 3 in management
with the ISO 9.001:2008 certification in a planned fashion.
Within a 12-month period, the construction project
earned a first-of-its-kind certification for the Quality
Management System, valid for all its operations on a global
scale within the Scope of On Shore Port Projects and
Dredging.

BNDES Releases Funds for Family Homes
19
The Igrapiúna Rural
Family Home (CFR-I) and
Agroforest Family Home
(Cfaf ), located in Igrapiúna
and Nilo Peçanha, in Bahia,
respectively, have reason
to celebrate. The Brazilian
National Economic and
Social Development Bank
(BNDES) has released the
funds for the remodeling
and expansion of the
teaching units, which will
allow an increased number
of youth to benefit from
the initiative each year. The
investment is the result of
the Technical and Financial
Cooperation Agreement
signed in 2009 by BNDES
and the Odebrecht
Foundation.
According to Robson
Kisaki, Teaching Director
at CFR-I, the achievement
is a gift for all educators,
employees and students:
“The new installations will
create a more favorable
environment for learning Com o Sistema Ponto a Ponto, a tarifa paga pelo usuário será proporcional ao trecho percorrido
Students from the Igrapiúna Rural Family Home will be benefited with the expansion and remodeling of the head office
20 odebrechtnoticias.com.br / no. 274 / january 2012
and will allow the sites
to hold activities for the
community,” said Kisaki.
For CFR-I, the funds
were divided into two
payments. The first, which
is already available, in the
amount of approximately
R$ 700,000, is for the
construction of the
classrooms, administrative
area and teachers’ room,
cafeteria, computer lab,
library and multisport
court.
The release of
approximately R$ 750,000
for Cfaf as a single
payment will help it
expand its lodging and
build a cafeteria, library,
seed laboratory and room
for the school board and
teaching team. “This
partnership will help
to further improve the
technical and professional
training offered to the
youth,” said Suzana
Baiardi, the home’s
Teaching Coordinator.
In 2011, CFR-I and
Cfaf were authorized
to administer the
Professional Technical
Education High School
Course in Agribusiness
and the Professional
Technical Education
High School Course in
Forests, respectively, both
integrated with the High
School. The certification
was recognized by the
Bahia State Board of
Education.
OTHER ACTIONS
The Presidente
Tancredo Neves Rural
Producers’ Cooperative
(COOPATAN) was also
benefitted and received
the second payment,
in the amount of
more than R$ 691,000,
corresponding to the
construction of a fruit
pre-processing unit.
The first payment, of
approximately R$ 750,000,
was released in June
2011. The construction
work is set for conclusion
in February of this year.

Companies Can Recover Taxes Paid Abroad
Value Added Tax (or V.A.T.) is the tax
charged for the majority of goods and services
supplied by Canada and by certain European
countries. In Brazil, it known as the ICMS
(Service and Merchandise Tax). In order to
encourage business tourism, these countries
reimburse the tax to companies who incurred
expenses with hotels, vehicle rentals, fuel,
meals and transportation, training-related
costs, conferences, fairs and conventions;
market research, projects and professional
services.
At Odebrecht, the Shared Services Center
(CSC) is supporting companies during this
process. In order to recover the amount of
tax paid, it is necessary for the company
to sign a contract with another specialized
in recovering taxes abroad. The work also
depends on the support of the companies’
Members for the presentation of the receipts
and invoices.
In 2008, the Engineering and Construction
business was reimbursed more than US$
16,000 for its expenses related to an MBA
course completed by Members at England’s
Cranfield University.
The following countries return the V.A.T.:
Austria, Finland, Iceland, United Kingdom,
Belgium, France, Luxemburg, Sweden, Canada,
Holland, Monaco, Denmark, Ireland and
Norway.

Over 121,000 seedlings of Atlantic Forest
species planted in the Bahia municipalities of
Camaçari, Simões Filho, Entre Rios and Dias D’Ávila
in 2011. This was the result of the Forest Factory
project, which produced approximately 400,000
seedlings and held 26 events, such as the lecture on
environmental awareness and the courses focused
on fighting forest fires for 1,024 people.
Created in 2008, the Forest Factory initiative is
maintained by Braskem; the Camaçari Industrial
Promotion Committee (COFIC); CETREL, an
entity focused on ensuring the environmental
protection of the Camaçari Industrial Center;
and the Garcia D’Ávila Foundation, an entity
focused on sustainable development, as well as
the support of other companies. The project is
one of the actions implemented by the Costa dos
Coqueiros Ecological Corridor Institute (INCECC), an
organization created to install an ecological corridor
that connects the remaining vegetation in Bahia’s
Northern Coast by producing seedlings of native
Atlantic Forest species, cerrado (scrubland) and
caatinga (dry forest) and restoring degraded areas.
In 2011, the seedlings were planted with the
assistance of the residents from the communities
of Sauípe (Mata de São João), Pitanga dos Palmares
(Simões Filho), Parque Florestal (Camaçari), Porto
Sauípe (Entre Rios) and Bairro do Bosque (Dias
D’Ávila), helping to recover some 30 hectares.
“Our goal is to restore, conserve and protect the
Forest Ring while promoting social engagement,”
said Álvaro Oyama, Executive Director of INCECC.
“We also alert the government about the
destruction of the ring due to illegal practices such
as invasions,” he said. According to Oyama, an
average of 110,000 seedlings are planted each year.

The Degraded Area Recovery
Program (PRAD) at the Santo
Antônio Hydroelectric Power
Plant – built by Odebrecht
Energia in Rondônia –
recovered more than 400,000
m2 of areas at the construction
site at the end of 2011. Since the
start of the construction work,
over 700,000 m2 have already
been recovered.
The PRAD processes involve
the removal of the constructed
physical structure, cleaning of
the site and laying of the plant
soil layer for the revegetation
and planting of native species.
Specific structures, such as the
fuel supply center and mechanic
workshop, are evaluated to
identify any possible signs of soil
contamination.
The seedlings are generated
at the project greenhouse
through a manual process that
does not use any chemical
products and a composting
technique to create the
planting substrate, which
includes leftover food from the
construction site dining hall and
pieces of shredded wood. The
greenhouse has a production
capacity of 100,000 seedlings
per year.
The Members are responsible
for collecting seeds from
some 60 native species in the
neighboring forests, preparing
the earth for germination and
caring for the seedlings’ growth.
Anatalino Silva, Environmental
Technician, stated that in
addition to the environmental
investment, the sector also
invests in people, including
training and qualification
courses.
