It s That Time ofYear Again!

Every winter and earlyspring we find ourselvesfighting the onslaught ofcolds and flus, butever wonder how todetermine whichis which?

We have puttogether someinformationthat will helpyou as well as aguide (Fig. 1) toput it all inperspective.

Colds - You can usually feel coldsymptoms developing over a few days.Symptoms might be the same as thosefor allergies; but without itching in theear, nose and throat. You could have asore throat, cough, or mild fever. Nasaldischarges are thin and clear at the outsetbut change to thick, yellow or green.Colds generally occur during the falland winter and should clear up in 7 to10 days.

You can achieve temporary relief ofsymptoms with over-the-counterantihistamines and decongestants. Ifsymptoms don t clear up within two

weeks, talk to your doctor. You canminimize the risk of catching a cold bywashing your hands after contact withcold sufferers and any objects they mayhave touched. Try to avoid coldsufferers sneezing or coughing in yourdirection and don t touch your nose oreyes with your fingers.

Flu - The onset of flu can be suddenand symptoms often includeexhaustion, headache and severeaches and pains. Occasionally a

stuffy nose, sneezing and sore throatare added to the mixture of symptoms.A cough is common and can becomesevere. High temperatures (102-104F)can last 3 - 4 days while a generalweakness or fatigue can continue for 2 -3 weeks.See your doctor for antiviral medica-tions to relieve flu symptoms. To helpprevent the flu, talk to your doctor aboutvaccination with annual flu shots.

Regardless whether it is the cold or fluit is never any fun when inflicted withthese little bugs of life it is somethingwe would rather not even like to thinkabout.

So take what precautions you can bykeeping your immune system as healthyas possible; and if all fails and you findyourself lying in bed sick, at the thoughtthat you just became sick then there isalways the age tested remedy - some ofgrandma s chicken noodle soup. QM

    A Cleaning Method is Revisited

The Triple S Speedster 1000backpack is on of several

models that Omni isstarting to incorporate into

    its operations.

Quality Matters recently caught up withJessica Manko, Omni s Director ofOperations, for SoutheastMichigan and talked to her abouta technology, backpack vacuumsystems, that Omni is now introducingto more sites as this system has evolvedwith better power and easier portabilityallowing Omni, for the first time, toimplement this technology on a largerscale. We talked with Ms. Mankoabout backpack vacuums:

QM What is a back pack vacuum andhow does it differ (if at all) from thetraditional vacuums that Omni usestoday?

JM Basically it s a vacuum cleanerthat you wear on your back. An

upright vacuum uses a beater bar whichagitates the carpet prior to picking updebris. This was necessary in oldstyle office buildings that had carpetingwith tall naps. Office buildings todayinstall short nap carpets that eliminatethe need to beat the carpet.Additionally the increased suction ofthe backpack vacuum makes it farsuperior to an upright vacuum. Otherbenefits include better filtrationsystems which can help reduce sickbuilding syndrome; the operation(vacuuming) minimizes stirring updust and (it) works well on hardfloors as well as carpet.

QM Does using a backpack vacuumimpose any safety risks to the user,i.e., back problems?

JM Depending on the model thebackpack weights between 9 10lbs. Properly wearing the harnessreduces risks to the employee.Additionally, studies have shown that

    these vacuumseliminate stressand body fatigue.There is no morepushing andpulling a heavyupright vacuum.As with alle l e c t r i c a le q u i p m e n t ,proper safetyprecautions needto be maintained.The weight of

these units hasalways beenan issue; and asthey have beenredesigned to

be lighter and more powerful, we were ina position to begin looking at thistechnology for use at our sites.

QM Beyond the portability of the unit, does the backpack vacuum offer anyother advantages over its traditionalcounterpart?

JM One nice feature is that you can carryall attachments with you. That way ifyou have to get into a tight corner orvacuum an upholstered chair you do nothave to go back to the janitor s closet. You have your tools with you, thereby, eliminating wasted labor.

Ms. Manko further told Quality Mattersthat the backpack systems also increaseproductivity, reduce the potential forinjury and the backpacks have been wellreceived by Omni employees who getreally excited about them once they weretrained and had an opportunity to usethem. QM
