The Diocese of Paterson will be doing a Marian Pilgrimage to The Basilica of the National Shrine

of the Immaculate Conception on October 21, 2017.

The Spiritual Journey includes: Holy Mass, Confessions in Crypt Church, Catechetical Presentations, Rosary (multi-lingual), Devotion-al Time, Divine Mercy, Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament.

The One-Day Pilgrimage has a cost of $49.00 per person. This includes transporta-tion and gratuity, all day activities at Shrine, rest stop while going, Meal stop on return, depart Washington at 4:15pm. Please call the parish office if you are interested in taking part in this event.

THIS MONTH’S LITURGY AT A GLANCE

October is Ordinary Time and the invitation con-tinues to all Christians to immerse ourselves into the life of service and love to which the Gospel calls us. The gospel readings in the first two Sun-days are parables that represent a demand to-ward discipleship and Christian life. The invita-tion to the banquet is made with generosity and freely, but you had to respond with the required attitudes. During the last Sundays of the month, the responses from Jesus to the trick questions of the Pharisees to trap him in a doctrinal error are discussed; in them, we are invited to reject paying taxes to foreign gods, to delve deeper into the responsibility of discipleship not as an exter-nal compliance with the law, but as a response from the heart.

There are no special liturgical feasts, but the great saints of the Church are celebrated includ-ing the two Theresas (Lisieux and Ávila), the two Francis (Assisi and Borgia), and the martyrs of the church of America. St. Anthony Claret is also celebrated, founder of the Sons of the Immacu-late Heart of Mary.

October is the second Marian month of the year, since the Rosary takes center stage in the Church’s devotion. Our Lady of the Rosary is the patroness of Guatemala. For Hispanic peoples, October is also representative of a collective identity that has been forged throughout many years. Although there are diverse cultures in America, the majority of the countries are united in a common language and religion.

PANORÁMICA DE LA LITURGIA DE ESTE MES

Octubre es Tiempo Ordinario y continúa la invi-tación a todos los cristianos a profundizar en la vida de servicio y amor a la que nos llama el Evangelio. Las lecturas del evangelio de los pri-meros dos domingos son parábolas que repre-sentan una fuerte exigencia de seguimiento y de vida cristiana. La invitación al banquete está he-cha con generosidad y gratuitamente, pero hay que responder con las actitudes necesarias. En los últimos domingos del mes, se habla de las respuestas de Jesús a las preguntas trampa de los fariseos para atraparlo en algún error doctri-nal; en ellas, se invita a no pagar impuestos a dioses extraños, a profundizar en la responsabili-dad del seguimiento no como cumplimiento ex-terno de la ley, sino como respuesta del corazón.

No hay fiestas litúrgicas especiales, pero se con-memoran las figuras de grandes santos de la Iglesia, como las dos Teresas (Lisieux y Ávila), los dos Franciscos (Asís y Borja) y los mártires de la iglesia en América. También se celebra a san Antonio Claret, fundador de los Hijos del Inma-culado Corazón de María.

Octubre es el segundo mes mariano del año, por el lugar central que ocupa el Rosario en la devo-ción de la Iglesia. Nuestra Señora del Rosario es la patrona de Guatemala. Para los pueblos hispa-nos, octubre es también representativo de una identidad colectiva forjada a lo largo de muchos siglos. Aunque en América hay diversas culturas, la mayoría de los países se unen en una lengua y religión comunes.

NUESTRA SEÑORA DEL ROSARIO

La Iglesia celebra el 7 de octubre la memoria de la Bienaventurada Virgen María del Santí-simo Rosario o Nuestra Señora del Rosario. Esta celebración es una invitación a meditar los misterios de la vida del Señor en compañía de la Virgen María. En el siglo XII, al Rosario se le llamó el ―salterio de la bienaventurada Virgen María‖ debido a que, en ese tiempo, las beguinas de Gante recitaban el Ave María por cincuentenas que correspondían al salterio davídico. Posteriormente, la palabra rosario se empleó para referirse a las coronas de rosas

que Fray Angélico y otros artistas colocaban sobre la Virgen María en sus obras. Desde el siglo XVI, la reci-tación de las Avemarías dio lugar a la meditación y contemplación de los misterios de Cristo y de su ma-dre. Este tipo de meditación ya había sido difundida por la orden de los predicadores, también conocidos como los dominicos. En el año 1208, Santo Domingo de Guzmán había recibido de la Virgen María la enco-mienda de rezar el Rosario como arma poderosa con-tra los enemigos de la fe.

La fiesta de la Virgen del Rosario surgió como un re-cuerdo de la Batalla de Lepanto del 7 de octubre de 1571. En esta batalla, la flota cristiana obtuvo una ines-perada victoria sobre la turca cuyas naves y armamen-to era superior. El Papa Pío V atribuyó esta victoria a la intercesión de la madre de Jesús y en su bula Salva-toris Domini del 17 de marzo de 1572 instituyó la cele-bración anual de la Virgen de la Victoria fijándola el 7 de octubre. El 5 de agosto de 1716 el Papa Clemente XI introdujo la fiesta del Rosario de María en el calenda-rio litúrgico de la iglesia occidental. En 1727, Benedic-to XIII introdujo en el Breviario lecturas propias y re-conoció la intercesión mariana con el rezo del Rosario. Desde Gregorio XII a León XIII los documentos ponti-ficios sobre el Rosario abundaron. Durante el pontifi-cado de Pío X la fiesta del Rosario de la Virgen fue fija-da definitivamente el 7 de octubre fundiéndose con la memoria de la Virgen de la Victoria. En la reforma ru-brical de 1969, se cambió el título de la celebración de fiesta del Santísimo Rosario a fiesta de Nuestra Seño-ra, la Virgen del Rosario. En 2002, el Papa Juan Pablo II —en la introducción de su Carta Apostólica Rosario de la Virgen María— resaltó que el Rosario, aunque se distingue por su carácter mariano, es una oración cen-trada en Cristo. Juan Pablo II dice que el pueblo cris-tiano aprende de María a contemplar la belleza del rostro de Cristo y a experimentar la profundidad de su amor. María encuentra su pleno sentido en la depen-dencia total del misterio redentor de su Hijo. Ella no tiene otra finalidad que la de conducirnos hacia Él y de transformarnos en Él. El énfasis en rezar el rosario se centra en los misterios de Cristo, los cuales se actuali-zan e iluminan el misterio de nuestra propia vida. El rosario modela al hijo espiritual de María, según la vida de su Hijo Jesús.

OUR LADY OF THE ROSARY

The Church celebrates the memorial of the Blessed Virgin Mary of the Most Holy Rosary or Our Lady of the Rosary on Oc-tober 7th. This celebration is an invita-tion to meditate on the mysteries of the Lord’s life in the company of Virgin Mary. In the 12th century, the Rosary was called the ―Blessed Virgin Mary’s Psalter‖ because, at the time, Gante’s Beguines recited the Holy Mary in sets of fifty, which corresponded to the Davidian Psalter. Afterwards, the word rosary was used to refer to the crowns of roses that Fra Angelico and other artists put over the Virgin Mary in their works. From the 16th century, the recitation of Holy Maries gave the opportunity for meditation and con-templation of the mysteries of Christ and his mother. This kind of meditation was already spread by the order of Preachers, also known as Dominicans. In the year 1208, Saint Dominic de Guzmán was com-mended by Virgin Mary to pray the Rosary as a pow-erful weapon against the enemies of the faith.

The feast of the Virgin of the Rosary was instituted in memory of the Battle of Lepanto on October 7, 1571. In this battle, the Christian fleet reached an unex-pected victory over the Turkish fleet whose ships and weaponry were superior. Pope Pius V attributed this victory to the intercession of Jesus’ mother and in his bulla Salvatoris Domini of March 17, 1572 he in-stituted the yearly celebration of the Virgin of Victory to be observed on October 7. On August 5, 1726 Pope Clement XI introduced the feast of Mary’s Rosary in the Western church liturgical calendar. In 1727, Ben-edict XIII introduced proper readings in the Breviary and recognized the Marian intercession with the prayer of the Rosary. Pontifical documents were plentiful from Gregorius XII to Leo XIII. During the pontificate of Pius X the feast of the Virgin’s Rosary was definitely instituted on October 7, fusing with the memorial of the Virgin of Victory. In 1969’s ru-brical reform, the title of the celebration of the feast of the Most Holy Rosary was changed to the feast of Our Lady, the Virgin of the Rosary. In 2002, Pope John Paul II—in the introduction of his Apostolic Letter Rosary of Virgin Mary—underlined that the Rosary, though distinctive in its Marian character, is a prayer centered in Christ. John Paul II says that the Christian people learn from Mary to contemplate the beauty of the face of Christ and to experience the depth of his love. Mary finds the plenitude of herself in the total dependency of the redeeming mystery of her Son. She has no other purpose than to lead us to Him and to transform us in Him. The emphasis on praying the rosary is centered in Christ’s mysteries, which are updated and illuminate the mystery of our own life. The rosary models the spiritual son of Mary, according to the life of her own Son, Jesus.
