general information

Location

Oman is situated on the Southeast corner of the Arabian Peninsula. Its coastline extends 1,700 km from the Straits of Hormuz in the North, to the borders of Yemen in the South and over-looks three seas: The Arabian Gulf, The Gulf of Oman and The Arabian Sea.

Oman borders Saudi Arabia in the West; the United Arab Emirates in the Northeast, Yemen in the South; Straits of Hormuz in the North and The Arabian Sea in the East. The total land area of Oman is around 309,500 km2 which makes it the third largest country in the Arabian Peninsula.

Page 6: Oman Tours and Trips

Topography

Oman possesses a rich and diverse topography ranging from rugged mountains and rocky deepwater fjords in the North, to the spectacular dunes of Sharqiyah (Wahiba) Sands, the giant rub al khali desert, and two large salt flats in the centre, to the lush green hills of Dhofar region in the South, with rugged coasts and placid beaches stretching along the 1,700 km coastline.

The northern coastal strip along the Gulf of Oman is known as the Batinah Coast; a narrow fertile plain separated from the rest of the country by the Hajar Mountains. The highest peak is Jabal Shams (Sun Mountain) at 3,075m. The southern slopes of the range are notable for their oasis towns where date groves flourish in the dry desert air.

In the South lies the second mountain range in Oman; the Qara Mountains, which attracts the light monsoon rains during the midsummer months, turning them green with vegetation whose roots help delay the effects of erosion resulting in a soft rolling landscape more akin to central Africa. As in the North, a narrow fertile coastline plain lies between the moun-tains and the seas, at whose centre Salalah lies, surrounded by lush vegetable farms and coconut groves.

general information

Climate/Population

The varied geography of the Sultanate has resulted in a wide variety of climatic condi-tions. Although lying in the tropics, the Sultanate is subject to seasonal changes, like the more temperate regions of the world.

The hottest months are June through August. The summer monsoon just touches the southern coast of Dhofar during these months, bringing regular light rain to Salalah and reducing the average daytime highs to 30ºC. The most pleasant months to visit Oman are mid-October through May when daytime temperatures fall into the lower 30s and below.Rainfall varies and in general remains sparse and irregular. In the South most of the year’s rainfall occurs during the summer monsoon months. In the North the opposite occurs. Here most rain comes from occasional winter storms which descend out of the Mediterranean during the months of January through March, depositing an annual average of 10cm of rain on the capital area.

population Approximately 3.5 million. Around 2.6 million of which are Omani Nationals. The remaining are expatriates from India, Asia, other Arab countries, Europe and the USA..

The first stop on the Muscat City Tour is the Grand Mosque, a most beautiful architectural piece of work. The Mosque was built over a period of 6 years from 1995 to 2001. The main chandelier is made of pure Swarovski crystal and the carpet adorning the large prayer hall was woven by experts, made out of pure Persian silk. The Mosque exterior is constructed with

quality Rajasthani Sandstone and the main halls as well as the smaller prayer rooms are adorned with the finest Italian Marble. The Mosque is surrounded by 5 minarets’, each of which symbolizes the holy five vows taken by every devout Muslim to reinforce his faith in the Almighty. Definitely a “must see!”From the Mosque, proceed through the Embassy road (please note that it is forbidden to take photo-graphs) to the old part of Muscat city: The Muttrah souk - a traditional Omani market. The souk offers a wide range of goods, especially typical Omani souvenirs like Frankincense, the Omani Dagger or Khanjar and beautiful silver handicrafts and “Pashmina shawls”. The guide will escort you on the stroll through the souk and assist wherever needed to obtain the best deal (bargaining is part of the daily trade here!).

The next stop is the Bait Al Zubair Museum. The museum is a small town house that has been converted to display the old archeological findings and Omani traditions such as national dress and jewelry. The Museum also has an interesting display of old pictures of Muscat before the renaissance that started with his Majesty the Sultan Qaboos’s reign in 1970. From here we shall proceed to see the Sultan’s Palace (video filming is prohibited) surrounded by the 2 Forts of Mirani and Jalali built by the Portuguese in the 16th century during their rule of the coastal cities of Oman. Finally return to the Hotel on the Al Bustan Road (named after the famous Al Bustan Palace hotel).
