OSDC 2oth ANNIVERSARYWEEKLY DANCES NIGHTS (PLUS RELATED INFORMATION)
November 17 and 24, 1996original kickoff meetings were hed at the SAC BalLroom Club (1308 FortCrookRoad, name aterchanged to the Be levue Socia Centre, sti I exists today).
January l, 1997The Omaha Swing Dance Club (OSDC) was officially formed and By Laws ratif ied. Annua dues were setat S20 for Regular Membership and 55 for Associate Membership (under a8e 18).There were 18 members in the c ub at its formation ... Doug Anderson, Col een Bul , John Clark, JudyGarretson, Gil Hi l, Lu Klmpston, Janet Lenfant, Mick Merrick, Sandy Reirners, Roni Reynolds, Carol Ring,Greg Schil ler, Ron Shepard, John Taulborg, Ron White, Chuck Witt, Mar ene Witt, and Stan Zlochen. The club's first dances were on Sunday evenings at Bobby Sox (near 83fd and Center, name was changedto Flashbacks in Ju y, 1997 and sti l exists today).
1997ln addition to the club sponsored dances on Sundays at Bobby Sox / Flashbacks, members regularldanced at other locations to promote WCS and fecruit new members. Locations mentioned in 1997newsletters were Wednesday evenings at two locations, the New Tower Inn (near 78th and Cass Street,no onger exists) and Keno Cabana (in Bennlngton, sti l l exists) and Thursday evenings at two locatjons,6:00 pm at Guitars and CadilLacs (near 108th and Dodge, no longer exists) and 9:00 pm at the Shark C ub(rear 7,/nd and Cenre', .r i I F\ists rodaV).
March 31, 1997OSDC was legally incorporated as a non profit 501c organlzation when their lawyet lames Monahan,fi ed the appropriate paper with the State of Nebraska. Lawver and fi ing fees were paid by a donationfrorn c ub member John Taulborg. There were 59 members in the club when incorporated.
June 17, !997Tuesday dances began at the American Pie / The Garage (5022 S 114th Street between L and QStreets, originally cal ed Shooters, name changed to American Pie on June 13, 1997 and a month later to TheGarage. lt no longer exists today). The floor at Flashbacks was small so the club began looking for a arger venue. The result was this newocation and night. Tuesdays became the official dance night, but dancing on Sundays at Flashbackscontinued.
The club began offerlng free dafce lessons at thls new location. First dance inst.uctors were Marty Hebert,Mary A bert, and Anne (Barone) Rlce.Costs were covered by donations with a suggested adrnission of 54 for members, S6 for nonmembers. The carage received 53 of this but required a 5100 minimum plus a S30 deejay fee. The club also ab-sorbed the dance lesson costs. lnit ial attendance was good but eventually dropped to where coveringthese costs was a chaLlenge for the c ub.
August, 1997Newsletter offjcially name "Footnotes"Logo contest he d ... winning design subrnitted by Ray Hansen. The logo is sti l l used today.
November 18, 1997Tuesday dances were moved from The Garage to the Bel Air Banquet Room {sti l l in existence near 120thand Center). The move was necessary because The Garage was experiencing diff iculties staying open.Costs to the c ub remained the same as The Garage. nit ial attendance was good, but just as with thecarage, it eventua ly dropped and the club again had diff iculties covering lts costs.
February 5, 1998Dancing began on Sundays at the Shark Club (sti l l in existence near 72nd and Center).F ashbacks declded to c ose on Sundays so the club could no longer use that as a clu b night out. A secondofficia dance night was wanted and that search lead to the Shark Club. The club now sponsored two regularly scheduled dance nights.
February, 1998The first OSCD T-Shirts were made avai able ... black with red and white lettering using the club's logo.
March 5 to 26, 1998Wee! y ddr(e, "r rhe Bel A r were roved fror lLesday to hursday.
March 31, 1998Weekly dances returned to Tuesday and moved frorn the Be Air to E i 's Bar and Gri I in Rockbrook Vil lage(near l-80 and Center Street, lts nar.e changed to the E ite Lounge in 2008 but is now c osed).Attendance at the Be Air had dropped, and costs wefe not being covered. The club was struggling tostay in existence. By chance, then c ub president Judy (Garretson) Merrick had a luncheon meeting atEli 's. She noticed the dance floor which ed to a conversation with Dan, the owner of Eli 's. He agreed toallow the club to meet there on Tuesday nlghts.
Dan did not req!ire any fee or mlnimum and also offered to help the club by paying for the dance inst.uc-hon. The club's only expense was for the deejay which they were able to cove. with donations to a tip jar
Latet Dan slightly enlarged Eli 's dance floor to accommodate the c ub.
Because of this arrangement with Eli 's, the c ub began to grow and become financia ly sound. t is l ikelythe club wou d not exist today if not for the suppoft received from Dan. This was the start of what wouldbecome a 10 year run at Ell 's.
October 11, 1998Sunday dances were moved from the Shark Club to Jumpefs (lnside what was then the Ramada Inn, nowthe Comfort Inn near 72nd and Grover). The Shark C ub decided to re-model into a sports bar so the club was asked to leave. Fortunately Jump-ers was availab e and wil ing to let the ciub rnove those dances to their venue. Like Eli 's, they helped payfor the dance lessons. This began more than a four year run. This move allowed the club to continuetwo regulady schedu ed weekly dances.
October 7, 1999 to November 18, 1999Thursday dances were added at Rio's (3809 N 90th Street, later became the Arena, now Tanners).Tuesday at Eli 's and Sunday at Jumpers dances continued as before so the club now had three regularlyschedu ed dance nights.tlnfortunately Rio's decided to schedule a different activity on Thu.sday and asked the club to leave sothis arrangement lasted only two months.
January 5, 2000 to lantrary 27,2OOOThursday dances were again added, but this time at Grandmother's Lounge as a "trial run" (inside whatwas the Holiday Inn at 72nd and Grover, currently the Hotel R L).Tuesday at Eli 's and Sunday at Jumpers dances continued as before so the club again had three regular yscheduled dance nights.Grandmother's decided this "trial run" was not working so this arrangement lasted only one month.
March,2000The club began a 52 cover charge to pay for deejay and instructor cost at the weekly dances.A though admission had been charged for special events and dances, the club had relied on donationsfor its weekly dances. This is the first t ime a set amount was requested.
2000 and 2001 (throughout the year)Besides the weekly dances, the c ub had severa monthly dances on Friday and Saturday at Just DanceStudio, Studio D (14715 Industria Road), and ln the hor.e ofJoan and Ny'aury Udes.Members would often dance other locatjons at non c ub sponsofed dance nights. News etters from2000 and 2001 listed several venues where club members would go to dance ... the 18th An endment(96th and L), Ameristat Bluffs Run, and Harvey's Casinos (all in Council Bluffs off -29 near l-80), McKen-na's B ues and Barbeque (7425 Pacific, no long exists), Music Bax 11111 Cass, no longer exists), Anthonv'sRestaurant and Lounge (7220 F Street, sti l l exists), Guitar's and Cadil lacs (10865 West Dodge Road, nolonger exists).
August 2, 2001After a year and a half break, Thursday dances were again added, but this time at Bushwackers (sti l inexistence in Ralston). These dances would continue unti l June, 2002.Tuesday at Eli 's and Sunday at.lumpers dances continued as before so the c ub again had three regularlyscheduled dance nights for the next 8 months.
Februarv 24,2002After more than a four year run, Sunday dances at iumpers ended because attendance had dropped towhere the club was not covering its costs.Tuesday at Eli 's and Thursday at Bushwackers dances continued so the club sti l l had two regularly scheduleddance nights.
lune 27,2OO2After an 11 month run, Thursday dances at Bushwackers ended. For the next two months, Tuesday at Eli 's was the only regularly scheduled weekly dance.
August 29, 2002After a two month break, Thursday dances were once again added, this time at the American Legion Post#1 (near 78th and Dodge).Tuesday dances at E i 's continued so the c ub had two regularly scheduled weekLy dances.
December 28, 2006After more than four years, weekly Thursday dances at the American Legion Post #1 ended.Init ial attendance was good but had dropped to where the club was not covering rs cosrs.
However, the club continued to use the American Legion Post #1 for other dances including monthlyintermediate lessons during some years.Tuesday was now the only regularly scheduled dance night and has remained that to this date.
January 8, 2008 (Tuesday)Party for Dan (owner of Eli 's Bar and Gril l). Dan had Iust so d Eli 's and the c ub wanted to recognize himfor hosting the club for nearly 10 years.
February 5, 2008Cover charge for Tuesday dances was increased from S2 to S3 to help pay increased deejay and instructor costs. This is the first increase since a set cover chafge began in 2000.luly 1, 2008Tuesday dances moved from Eli 's / Elite Lounge to Arthur's 4 Seasons (near 114th and Dodge). After Eli 's was so d, the new owners closed it for several weeks for remodeling. During that t ime Daveand N4ary, the owners of Arthur's al owed the club to temporarily move its dances to Arthur's. The clubreturned to Eli 's on April 8 when it reopened as the Elite Lounge. After a couple of months at the E ite, the club decided to move back to Arthur's. This ended the club'slongest stay at any single location...over 10 years at Eli 's during which it experienced significant growth.
June 28,2011Intermediate lessons were started on the last Tuesday of each month. Cover increase to 55 on thesenights if you took the intermediate lesson. Cover remained 53 if you did on y the dance.Beginner lessons continued on a I the other Tuesdays. Cover remained S3 with the lesson free on theseTuesdays.
lune \2,2012Tuesday dances moved to the VFW Post 2508 (near 90th and Military).Arthuf's unexpected y c osed so the club had to begin searching for a new location. At that t ime theVFW Club did not have an adequate sound system and was charging 550 per night so the move to thatlocation was considered temoorarv.
August 21, 2012Tuesday dances moved from its temporary location at the VFW Club to the Passion (a new y opened clubnear 108th and Q, formerly the Roxbury Club, currently called Rhythmz).Like A.thur's, The Passion did not charge a fee but the c ub paid the deejay and dance instructor as theyhad at other locations.
December 17, 2013Tuesday dances moved back to the VFW C ub.Like Arthuf's, The Passion unexpectedly closed so the clLrb had to again search for a location. As before, this move was init ially considered temporary, but the VFW had updated their sound systemand was wil l ing to negotiate the faci ity fee in order to keep our dances at their facil i ty.As a result the VFW became the home of the Tuesday dances and currently rer.ains that way.
April 5, 2016Towards the end of 2015 and beginning of 2016, the c ub was contacted several t imes by ASCAP andother rnusic l icensing organizations. According to copyright laws, clubs l ike us are required to pay feesfor the right to play music at dances. After considerable research, the club decided to pay these feesthrough a l icensing organization called Fastdance.Because of this considerable added expense, cover charge for Tuesday dances had to be increased to54. This was on ly the second increase for weekly da nces. Adrnission was first set at 52 in 2000 andIncreaseo to )5 In luu6.
Match 27, 2Ol7Annual dues for c ub membership are currently S20 and have been that amount since first formed in7997.At jts annual meetjng, the membership voted to give the executive board permission to increase theyearly dues from S20 to S24. The purpose was to make it easier to pro-rate the dues per month if theboard decides to change the date when dues are to be paid. As of this writ ing, the executive board hasnot made any changes so the dues are sil l 520.
OSDC 2oth ANNIVERSARYETECTED OFFICERS AND OTHER EXECUTIVE BOARD MEMBERS
The club thanks all past and current officers for their wil ingness to serve. Without thejr efforts the clubwould not exist today ... there would be no p ace in Omaha to regularly dance WCS.
lf you have not been an offjcet please consider doing so to keep the club going for another 20 years.
NOTES ...1. Executive boards served six month terms unti l 2004 when terms of office became one year (exceptfor a few years in which the ength varied by a month or two). Elections usua ly took place the monthbefore the officers took office.2. The President, Vice President, Treasurer, and Secretary are e ected positions. Other positions such asNewsletter and Membership are appointed by the elected members of the executive board.3. lf not l isted, the Newsletter and l\4embership positions were covered by the e ected officers (usuallythe President).4. Nick Mulder was the first regular deejay for the club. He was at Flashbacks when the club started inJanuary 1997. He continued to be the deejay as the club moved to other ocaions (The Garage, Bel Aitand E it). Howard Borden was added as a deejay in October 1999 when the c ub began a second dancenight at Rio's. Nick Mulder eventually left, but Howard has continued to this day. Although Nick andHoward were the primary deejays hired by the club, the officers and other members would fi l l in whenneeded (often on a volunteer basis, especially in the ear y years of the club).
