************************************************************************************ INVESTIGATIVE INTERNSHIP AT NEW ORLEANS’ JUVENILE PUBLIC DEFENDER’S OFFICE

Juvenile Regional Services, a nonprofit law office that advocates for young people in Louisiana’s juvenile justice system, seeks investigative interns to assist in finding and developing material for the defense of JRS clients. The work of investigators is carried out mostly in the field – in private homes, in schools, in businesses, and in the street – and requires creativity, perseverance, empathy, responsibility, and excellent communication skills. Strong candidates will have a demonstrated commitment to working with indigent youth and underprivileged communities. In New Orleans, JRS is the juvenile public defender, representing most indigent youth in Orleans Parish Juvenile Court. We are an independent, nonprofit law office, born in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina and committed to excellence in client-centered, holistic representation, and to building a fairer, more compassionate, and genuinely rehabilitative juvenile justice system. Our intern investigators work in teams of two, under the supervision of staff, as the lead investigators in juvenile delinquency cases. This is not a desk job. The internship offers a unique insight into the juvenile justice system, and into the social fabric of New Orleans. The work of investigative interns has extraordinary significance for our clients: every day, investigators unearth the evidence that saves young people from unjust convictions. EXAMPLES OF TYPICAL WORK FOR INTERN INVESTIGATORS INCLUDE: • Locating and interviewing witnesses; • Taking witness statements; • Photographing crime scenes; • Writing investigative reports; • Testifying in court; • Performing background checks; • Analyzing police records; and • Assisting attorneys throughout the trial preparation process. QUALIFICATIONS & ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS: The spring internship will begin January 2013. Applicants must commit to spending at least four months in the internship, with a commitment of at least 9 hours every week. Candidates should carefully evaluate their other commitments and responsibilities in deciding whether they have sufficient time to dedicate to this internship. We will pair each investigative intern with a partner. Interns will set their own schedules in consultation with their supervisors. The program is unpaid, but, if you are a student, your school may allow you to receive academic credit for your participation. We are happy to support you in your efforts to receive credit for your work with us. We do not require either a specific academic background or prior experience in criminal investigation. All intern investigators will be trained in proper defense investigation techniques. APPLICATION INSTRUCTIONS: Applications will be accepted and reviewed on a rolling basis until December 1, 2012. Applying earlier in the cycle can significantly increase your likelihood of selection. To apply, please send a resume and cover letter containing a brief statement of interest to: Marecca Vertin Juvenile Regional Services 1820 St. Charles Avenue, Suite 205 New Orleans, Louisiana 70130 [email protected]

SOAR- Fall Campus Workshop!! Are you concerned with confronting racism and economic oppression as a student, staff, or faculty member at Tulane? Do you want to be an effective community organizer in your school, neighborhood, city, and world? This unique 3-day workshop is offered by The People’s Institute, a national, multiracial, anti-racist network dedicated to ending racism and other forms of institutional oppression. Over the last 27 years, we have provided training, consultation, and leadership development to more than 300,000 people in organizations nationally and internationally. The People’s Institute moves beyond a focus on the symptoms of racism to an understanding of what it is, where it comes from, how it functions, why it persists and how it can be undone. The workshop’s systemic approach stresses learning from history, developing leadership, maintaining accountability to communities, creating networks, undoing internalized oppression, and understanding the role of organizational gate-keeping in perpetuating racism. There is a $20 refundable deposit to reserve your seat in the workshop. The deposit will be given back to participates at the end of the training on Sunday. To pay the deposit you need to go to the Office of Multicultural Affairs (The Garden Level of LBC G04) and pay the deposit to Desiree Anderson.
