The PACTS Project
PACTS - An innovative Primary care program
Advancing Competency To Support
family violence survivors
August 2015 PACTS MERQ 2
What was the problem? 1
No increase in violence teaching in 20 years
despite evidence of health impacts;
Dispersed student clinical and education
experiences;
If no champions “falls off” the curriculum;
Hidden curriculum “too hard” “no expert”
interpreted by students as = “not important”;
A problem across disciplines.
August 2015 PACTS MERQ 3
What was the problem 2
2013, WHO released clinical guidelines and
identified violence training as essential for health
care providers
2009, the majority of Australian medical schools
had less than 2 hours of teaching (predominately
lectures and small group teaching) on family
violence, with the maximum taught being 4 hours
2013-14, 57-82% practitioners felt that they would
benefit from further training in asking questions and
supporting survivors

Fun to work on a teaching resource with a multidiscipline team
The PACTS project aims To improve effective digital learning and teaching on family violence (FV) in pre-
vocational primary health care courses in Australia to better equip graduates
with the skills to recognise FV, and respond and intervene appropriately. The
specific goals were:
August 2015 PACTS MERQ 6
Produce an online, evidence-based, effective, learning package concerning family violence for primary health care students.
Pilot the online learning package in four Australian universities.
Disseminate the online learning package through an open access website and championing the use, development and adaptation of the resources by teachers and students.
The OLT-funded project in a nutshell
A resource for teaching primary health care students how to
recognise and effectively support patient/clients who
experience family violence
Deliverables
6 hour online learning package
Evaluation with students
Focus group Acceptability Accessibility Utility
Pre and post course survey testing
Post module survey testing
Outcome
Promote and champion use and extension.

Learning Theory to maximise impact: 1
Adult Learning Theory
Learner brings experience
Builds on existing knowledge (community and academic)
The learner is self directed
Options for choice in how the modules are used
Deeper learning with problem-centred learning
Cases to consider as learner progresses through modules

Beginner Learner needs rules
• How to ask
• Reporting requirements
• Management and referral pathways
Beginner Learner’s situational
perception is limited
• Cases
• Describe clear management pathways
Beginner Learner has no discretionary
judgement
• Mandatory reporting rules
Comparator with previous FV curriculum
in train
A safe, effective learning environment, before students
address family violence in real world practice, by
comparison with earlier curriculum.

“In our classes a few times, we watched a video
and I was in tears, and I couldn’t recover for a few
days, because content was just too much of a
shock. I like having the option of whether you
watch video or not, or read text, or sometimes -
maybe just going very easy [is important]. Some
people might be very sensitive.”
*Student attitude data still to be analysed
Where to next?
Dissemination and embedding as a national
resource;
Developing “train the trainer” modules, fund and
roll out;
Progress the World Health Organization
