Principal’s PenDare Families,

As the second quarter closes, please remember that your child’s achievement is dependent on his or her attendance in school. It is important to make sure your child is on time for school each and every day. We know it is not always possible, but thank parents for trying to make appointments outside of school hours. We have noticed that as the cold weather sets in, parent pick-ups at dismissal have begun to rise. If you are picking-up your children at dismissal, please refrain from calling them out of class. Instruction continues for many of our students until the bell rings.

As many parents have shared, we realize that the parking situation at dismissal is less than ideal. In some cases, the parking lot can be a safety hazard for families leaving the building at dismissal time. We thank you for your patience and are currently working on a solution to this issue.

During the month of January, students had several early dismissals and days with no school. While some of these closures were weather related, on other dates, teachers were engaged in professional learning specific to the York County School Division’s initiatives and the needs of our Dare students. YCSD is committed to creating Project Based Learning opportunities for our students and Dare teachers are beginning to learn about this type of instruction. In Project Based Learning (PBL), students work on authentic tasks and products, explore issues relevant to their lives, and connect with adults and organizations in the community and beyond. They see how the knowledge and skills they’re learning apply to the real world. In order to expose teachers to the principles of PBL, as a faculty we conducted our own PBL on the DES dismissal pick-up issue. Next steps involve meeting with the Office of Transportation and Operations to discuss the feasibility of the different plans. Please stay tuned.

At Dare, we are excited to learn more dynamic ways to engage students in rigorous and transformative instruction.

PTA News

PTA PresidentHello Dolphin Families,I hope everyone had a restful winter break. In looking ahead for the 2014 school year our P.T.A. has many exciting activities planned for our children!

Save the Date:

Passive FundraisingPassive Fundrasing is an easy way to support PTA Programs. Here are a few ways to earn for Dare PTA throughout the year. Before you shop, check to see whether your purchases can benefit Dare Elementary! These are easy ways for friends and relatives to help out, too.

General Mills Box Tops for Education: Clip the Box Tops logo from products you use every day, such as Cheerios, Kleenex, Hamburger Helper, Avery, Progresso soup and more! Please trim box tops to the dotted line keeping date visible, and submit Box Tops for Education to your child’s homeroom teacher and child’s name in an envelope addressed to DES-PTA. Each box top is worth ten cents to the PTA!

Labels for Education: Send in Labels from brands such as Campbell’s, Pepperidge Farm, Prego, Pace, V-8, and Swanson products. Each Label for Education gives the PTA points towards purchases of equipment and supplies.

Farm Fresh 123-4 Education Program: Simply return the 123-4 Farm Fresh Receipt to school with your student and Dare PTA will earn points towards the purchase of equipment and supplies.

Cut & PasteHelp our teachers by preparing materials for classroom instruction while getting to know other Dare Elementary parents. Cut & Paste meets the 2nd and 4th Tuesday of each month in the cafeteria.

If you have any questions about Cut & Paste committee or would like to be a volunteer, please contact Nozomi Overstreet at [email protected]

Clubs & ProgramsEarth Kids ClubEarth Kids Club is participating in a fundraiser this month called “Money for Dare’s Marvelous Meadow”. Students are collecting donations throughout the month of January to help purchase plants and other materials needed to expand our butterfly garden. We will have a spring planting day in March when the children will get to help add more plants and beautify the area. Also, we will continue working on our science journals making observations and recording information about various migratory animals. As a final project, students will work collaboratively to create an interactive bulletin board displaying wildlife findings and how seasonal changes locally affect changes around the globe. Here are some of the websites the students are using:

http://www.learner.org/jnorth/sunlight/sl/1/index.html

http://www.learner.org/jnorth/livecam/index.html

News from the SCA

By: Karley Haskiell

Pictures By: Julia Skinner and Mrs. Hunt

Hello. This is Karley Haskiell. In the first part of this article, I am going to talk about the SCA Food Drive and Toys for Tots.

SCA Food Drive

Let’s start off with the Food Drive. At Dare, we did a wonderful job with the Food Drive. There were two tables during the Food Drive. One table had a sign that said “K-2” for the Kindergarteners, First Graders, and Second Graders. Then, there was another table with a sign that said “3-5” for the Third Graders, Fourth Graders, and Fifth Graders. The amounts of food were not counted, but we got a whole van full of boxes with food in them. All of the food was carried in a van to the York County Food Pantry. Overall, we did a great job with the Food Drive at Dare.

Toys for Tots

Now, let’s talk about Toys for Tots. Again, we did a wonderful job with collecting toys for the kids in need. Dare Elementary students and teachers filled the white box with toys. The Salvation Army distributed the toys to all the kids.

Thank you for helping with the Food Drive and Toys for Tots. Thank you for making a difference in the lives of others.

Special Recognition & Award Winners

Show Your Dare SpiritShow your Dare Spirit every Friday by wearing your spiritwear.

Rules: On Fridays the teachers will count the number of children in the class who wear a Dare Spirit T-shirt, sweatshirt, headband, dog tag, or bracelet. Wearing school colors does not count. Water bottles do not count. The item must be on the student. Spiritwear from past years counts towards your percentage. Multiple spiritwear items on the same student (a t-shirt and a dog tag) counts as one. One point per student not per spiritwear item.

On Mondays, we will announce the class with the highest percentage of students wearing spiritwear. The winning class will receive Splashy the Dare Spirit Dolphin for the week and a sign to hang outside their classroom.

5th Grade Celebration5th Grade Celebration planning is underway. Please look for information on dates, planning meetings, volunteer opportunities, etc to come home with 5th grade students in mid-February.

As always, this Celebration will be composed of two separate events. There will be an evening Celebration held at the Grafton Complex for Dare families and their students. Also, our 5th Graders will enjoy their last moments at Dare before heading on to Middle School with a student Pool Party at Windy Point Pool. These two events will be on different evenings in June with specific dates and times to come out shortly.

YearbookIt is time to begin planning for the Dare Elementary Yearbook. Because it is nearly impossible for one person to be present and take photos of each and every Dare Elementary classroom activity, after school event, and field trip we need your help. As you attend Dare related events, we encourage you to take pictures and submit them to the yearbook committee via e-mail at [email protected]. It would be helpful if you include the following information with each photo: Names of Children in the photo, classroom, name of event and date of the event.

When submitting digital and scanned images, please remember that photos should be as close to 300 DPI (dots per inch) as possible in order to be printed with clarity. Images taken with a digital SLR or “point and shoot” camera are preferred. Typically, setting your camera to “JPEG Large Fine” or “JEPG Fine” will produce ideal images, but please know that the setting may vary based on your camera manufacturer. Pictures taken with cell phones (including iPhones and Androids) will not produce the quality desired.

If you have any questions about Dare Elementary Yearbookplease contact Brantlee Lemmink at [email protected]
