A NOTE FROM THE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR

Dear friend of Olney Theatre Center,

As Olney launches its 77th season with Godspell, we take a moment to look back at one of the theater’s leading lights who passed away in the fall of 2013. William H. Graham, Sr. played a wide variety of roles at Olney Theatre Center over the course of a five-decade-long association. After being introduced to the theater by Father Gilbert Hartke of Catholic University, Bill performed and directed here; he served as our General Manager, Managing Director and Chairman of our Board of Directors; and most significantly, mentored nearly a thousand young professionals as teacher and Director of the National Players, our legendary touring company. With deep gratitude for all he gave to us, we proudly dedicate our 2015 season to his memory.

The idea to produce Godspell, in fact, came indirectly from Bill. I visited him in the hospital not long before he passed, and walked into his room to hear a dozen people singing one of Godspell’s loveliest songs, “Day By Day”, around his bed. Bill wasn’t conscious anymore, but his large and loving family filled the room with beautiful music, and stirring life. Though I’m Jewish, Bill and his

family’s Catholicism at that moment wrapped me in its generous embrace. One of the many things I admired about Bill was the way his faith was the wellspring for so much good, so much kindness… for so many of the values I hold dear.

Bill is the kind of role model we need right now. We began rehearsal as the world was mourning the victims of the atrocities in Paris, atrocities committed in the name of religion, specifically aimed against artists expressing unpopular views. Whether you think of him as a savior or simply a great historical figure, Jesus also expressed unpopular views, and was killed for them. Godspell reminds us that religion can be a force for good, and freedom, and of course, love. It demonstrates that spirituality – no matter what you believe – can unite a community, not break it apart.

Bill learned and taught that lesson, and many others, throughout his long career. Another of his lessons was “give yourself permission”: to risk, to explore, to try the new and different. We do that every day here at Olney, in his honor. I hope our efforts are worth it, so “give yourself permission” to drop me a line at [email protected] and let me know what you think of the show, and Bill’s 2015 season.

Onward!

One of the top ten plays of London in 2013, (Guardian, London Evening Standard) Grounded is the story of an ace fighter pilot who becomes pregnant and gets reassigned to

operating drones from a windowless trailer on an Air Force base in the desert outside Las Vegas. Hunting terrorists by day and coming home to her family by night, the boundaries between reality and the screen – between the desert where she lives and the desert where she fights – blur until the

pressure becomes impossible to bear. (Recommended for ages 14 and up)

The Olney Theatre Center 2015 Season isDedicated to the Memory of William H. Graham, Sr.

William H. Graham, Sr. was a leader, mentor, director, performer, and a tireless advocate for the performing arts during his more than fifty-year association with Olney Theatre Center. Bill played several roles during his time at Olney Theatre, from Mainstage actor and director for the National Players, to General Manager and most recently as President Emeritus of our Board of Directors.

To pay tribute to his many contributions to Olney Theatre and the National Players, we dedicate the 2015 season to him. We remember Bill in all we do, and we invite you to honor his legacy by making a contribution to the William H. Graham, Sr. Fund supporting mentorship and FREE Summer Shakespeare at Olney Theatre Center.

Throughout this rehearsal process, I’ve kept my dad’s King James Bible at the director’s table. Not only has it been been a useful reference as we’ve dug in to several of the parables found in Godspell, but it also kept me mindful of my childhood faith. I was raised Southern Baptist, and it has defined my daily practice and behavior, my worldview, and many of my relationships. As I have grown up, married, and become a parent myself, my jour-ney of faith has continued—and it certainly hasn’t been straight or narrow.

Faith. Belief. These are deeply personal and continually evolving, and this is why I’m fascinated by this story. The people in this ensemble, like us, are simply trying to figure out what it is they truly believe and why. Jesus awakens them to a radical and here-tofore original point of view about how to live and how to anchor their faith, and he uses the language of parables and the method of storytelling.

One of the sections of my dad’s Bible that reflexively falls open is the eighteenth chapter of Matthew. Here are its first six verses:

1. At the same time came the disciples unto Jesus, saying, Who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven? 2. And Jesus called a little child unto him, and set him in the midst of them, 3. And said, Verily I say unto you, Except ye be converted, and become as little children, ye shall not enter the kingdom of heaven. 4. Whosoever therefore shall humble himself as this little child, the same is greatest in the kingdom of heaven. 5. And whoso shall receive one such little child in my name receiveth me. 6. But whoso shall offend one of these little ones which believe in me, it were better for him that a millstone were hanged about his neck, and that he were drowned in the depth of the sea.

Creating this production has demanded a similar child-like openness and a rejection of cynicism, and we have found the creative choices that define our production through being generous of spirit to one another. We are all fellow travelers on our own journey of faith, and in building community through play we are learning deeper lessons within these old familiar tales.

Thirty-five years ago, I was introduced to Olney Theatre Center by my husband, Jay, whose parents first brought him here more than fifty years ago.

Jay and I give to Olney Theatre Center because we value and believe in supporting the arts community. Theater broadens my experience, knowledge, and consciousness about the fascinating world around me. At Olney Theatre Center, it is easy to see how individuals can make a difference. We give because philanthropic support enhances the experiences of the performers, designers, and musicians who share their artistry so profoundly. We give because it excites us to see the growth of the young theatre artists who arrive at Olney Theatre Center as new college graduates, eager to learn on and off stage. By the end of their year at Olney, they have become professionals, ready to make their imprint in the field. We support Olney Theatre Center because it honors the past; yet at the same time, it is a trailblazer for new play development and mentorship. Members, donors, artists, and staff work in partnership to advance the field of theater, while making an important contribution to our local community. I was privileged to have known and to have worked with William H. Graham, Sr. -- former Olney Theatre Center president, managing director, actor, director, and head

of National Players. This season -- the 77th at Olney -- is dedicated to his memory, and I hope you will join me in supporting Olney with a gift. Your contribution will acknowledge the rich history of Olney Theatre Center and also be an investment to secure the future of Olney’s extraordinary legacy.

Being a part of Olney Theatre Center is truly satisfying. It has certainly enriched my life beyond measure.

Godspell traces, in a spirited celebration, the formation of a community around ideas. At its inception, Godspell was John-Michael Tebelak’s reaction against the stuffy solemnity that he found in churches more than in the Gospels themselves. At a dull Easter service in 1970, Tebelak found no trace of the Gospels’ sense of joy, and as a long-haired 22-year-old, he felt excluded from the church community. “Instead of ‘healing’ the burden, or resurrecting the Christ, it seems those people had pushed Him back into the tomb,” he said in a 1975 interview. For his Master’s thesis at Carnegie Mellon University, Tebelak decided to bring out the celebration in the Gospels and invite audiences to come as they are.

In addition to Tebelak’s personal experiences, Godspell was inspired by Harvey Cox’s writings about festivity and the theological importance of light-hearted, unapologetic revelry. In 1969’s Feast of Fools, Cox wrote, “In a success and money oriented society, we need a rebirth of patently unproductive festivity and expressive celebration. In an age that has quarantined parody and separated politics from imagination we need more social fantasy… we need a renaissance of the spirit and there are signs that it is coming.” Throughout this period, many musicals took on religious themes, but Godspell’s upbeat, uncynical approach to Christianity stood apart. Shows like Hair, Salvation, and Jesus Christ Superstar explore religious themes, but their joyful moments are tempered by the dark side of 1960s youth culture. Godspell lives in the light, finding the hope to take on the outside world through storytelling, play, and friendship.

This focus on joy separates Godspell from the centuries-old tradition of passion plays, which emphasize Jesus’ suffering, mining the Gospels for their plot and characterizations. Instead, Godspell celebrates the ideas. One note breaks through the cacophony of philosophers’ thoughts, bringing Jesus’ ideas and ideals to center stage. Through their revelry, the disciples learn and teach each other. Godspell looks beyond the external conflict of the Passion to follow their journeys to belief and community. Each tiny story that Jesus shares as a parable, song, or game is a step in that journey, demonstrating the power of ideas to change people and build community in lasting ways.

Although Godspell does revolve around Jesus, the show’s true protagonist is the community that he binds together. The show follows it from its birth, via Jesus, to the point where it must find the strength to stand on its own. In many ways, both explicit and implicit, Godspell reaches out to include its audience in this group. We invite you join us in celebrating—unapologetically—the potential for ideas to change the world and bring us together.

What are the connections between performance art, music, storytelling, and spirituality? Why is it that every year, people go into the desert [to Burning Man], let loose, share in the creation of giant works of art, become an ephemeral tribe, and then vanish without leaving one scrap to show they had ever visited? What do they find there? How does this event change their daily lives? What ethos brings and binds these people together? I believe these questions form a lens through which Godspell can be experienced, and perhaps the reverse is true as well.”

I believe Burning Man is an apt influence for Godspell, because it is such an incredible example of how a group of artists and storytellers can come together in the middle of nowhere and form a community.”

—Ivania Stack, Costume Designer

Scenic rendering by Paige Hathaway.

What is so wonderful about this particular musical is that it actively encourages each new production to have its own identity, to explore different ways to express the teachings of Jesus. That kind of freedom has allowed myself, and the entire creative team, to be able to truly explore all the possibilities of the story.”

Stephen Schwartz (Music and New Lyrics) was born in New York City on March 6, 1948. He studied piano and composition at the Juilliard School of Music while in high school and graduated from Carnegie Mellon University in 1968 with a B.F.A. in Drama. Upon coming back to live in New York City, he went to work as a producer for RCA Records, but shortly thereafter began to work in the Broadway theatre.

His first major credit was the title song for the play Butterflies Are Free; the song was eventually used in the movie version as well. In 1971, he wrote the music and new lyrics for Godspell, for which he won several awards including two Grammys. This was followed by the English texts, in collaboration with Leonard Bernstein, for Bernstein’s Mass, which opened the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C. The following year, he wrote the music and lyrics for Pippin and two years later, The Magic Show. At one point, Godspell, Pippin, and The Magic Show were all running on Broadway simultaneously.

He next wrote the music and lyrics for The Baker’s Wife, followed by a musical version of Studs Terkel’s Working, to which he contributed four songs, and which he also adapted and directed, winning the Drama Desk Award as best director. He also co-directed the television production, which was presented as part of the PBS “American Playhouse” series.

Next came songs for a one-act musical for children, Captain Louie, and a children’s book, The Perfect Peach. He then wrote music for three of the songs in the Off-Broadway revue, Personals, lyrics to Charles Strouse’s music for Rags, and music and lyrics for Children Of Eden. He then began working in film, collaborating with composer Alan Menken on the scores for the Disney animated features Pocahontas, for which he received two Academy Awards and another Grammy, and The Hunchback of Notre Dame. He also provided songs for DreamWorks’ first animated feature, The Prince of Egypt, for which he won another Academy Award for the song “When You Believe”. He most recently collaborated with Alan Menken on the songs for Disney’s Enchanted.

Mr. Schwartz provided music and lyrics for the original television musical, Geppetto, seen on The Wonderful World of Disney and recently adapted for the stage as Geppetto & Son. He has released two CDs on which he sings new songs, entitled Reluctant Pilgrim and Uncharted Territory. Mr. Schwartz’s most recent musical, Wicked, opened in the fall of 2003 and is currently running on Broadway and in several other productions around the United States and the world. In 2008, Wicked reached its 1900th performance on Broadway, making Mr. Schwartz the only songwriter in Broadway history ever to have three shows run more than 1900 performances. A book about his career, “Defying Gravity”, has recently been released by Applause Books.

Under the auspices of the ASCAP Foundation, he runs musical theatre workshops in New York and Los Angeles, and serves on the ASCAP board; he is also currently the President of the Dramatists’ Guild.

John-Michael Tebelak (Conceived/Originally Directed) originally wrote Godspell as his Masters Thesis project at Carnegie-Mellon in 1971. Subsequently, he directed productions of Godspell at La MaMa Theatre, the Cherry Lane Theatre, the Promenade Theatre, and on Broadway. He received the 1971 Drama Desk award for Most Promising Director. In 1972, Mr. Tebelak directed the play, Elizabeth I on Broadway, and off-Broadway staged The Glorious One in 1975 and Ka-Boom in 1980. He is also co-writer of the 1973 film of Godspell with David Greene. He was dramaturg for the Cathedral Church of St. John the Divine in New York and staged liturgical drama there, and the church’s theatre bears his name. John Michael Tebelak died April 2, 1985 of a heart attack in New York City.

Music Theatre International (MTI) is one of the world’s leading theatrical licensing agencies, granting schools as well as amateur and professional theatres from around the world the rights to perform the largest selection of great musicals from Broadway and beyond. “ Health risks and 100 extra pounds all went away a er bariatric surgery.”The moment her daughter could put her arms around her for the fi rst time, Barbara knew it was all worth it. Six months after her surgery—performed by John Brebbia, MD, an expert in the fi eld who has performed bariatric surgeries since 1999—Barbara had lost 100 pounds and the health risks she’d been carrying around with them. Her life and her health were dramatically changed after she met our experienced team of bariatric surgery specialists. MedStar Health’s bariatric surgery team can help you regain your health. Talk to us to learn how our guidance—before and after surgery—can put you on the path to wellness.
