South Australia allowed women in 1894, Western Australia in 1899 and NSW in 1902. Prior to this, women were not allowed to be involved in politics or voting as it was not considered appropriate for them. This event was significant for women’s rights and has shaped Australia as can be seen through Julia Gillard being the first Australian prime minister. 2.) 1 Jan 1908 – Canberra was chosen to be the capital city of Australia. Representatives from several states gathered in Melbourne. The debate went for a long time, surprisingly, Canberra ended up being the Capital of Australia. Soon after Canberra was chosen, a competition for the design of the new city was held. This was a very important decision. 3.) 11 Nov 1918 - Remembrance is on the 11th of November every year to remember those who sacrificed their lives during World War 1 in 1918 so that we can have the freedom that we have today. We show the respect by staying silent for around 3-5 minutes. This tradition started in 1918 and is now observed every year and has become an important day in Australian culture.
