How does it work? How does it work?
A driver must blow into the
mouthpiece of the device
The device checks the drivers breath
for measurable alcohol
If measurable alcohol is detected, the vehicle will not
start
Sober drivers will be able to operate the vehicles normally

Pre-set level The pre-set level refers to the breath alcohol
concentration at which the driver will be prevented from starting the vehicle.
The pre-set level is determined by the state authority. In most jurisdictions this is about .02 and can vary up to .05.
The interlock device is never set at .00 in order to prevent frequent lockouts due to “false positives”.
A false positive is when insignificant amounts of alcohol that would not impair the driver are detected, such as from the alcohol in mouth wash, and the driver is still prevented from starting the vehicle. This is not unusual because even our own bodies can produce alcohol as a natural by-product when consuming certain foods.
