ACE ATKInS THE nEW SpEnSEr nOVEL

Henry Cimoli and Spenser have been friends for years, yet the old boxing trainer has never asked the private eye for a favour. Until now. A heavy-handed developer is trying to buy up Henry’s condo on Revere Beach and sends thugs to move the process along. Soon Spenser and his apprentice, Zebulon Sixkill, find a trail leading to a mysterious and beautiful woman, a megalomaniacal Las Vegas kingpin, and plans to turn a chunk of land north of Boston into a sprawling casino. Bitter rivals emerge, alliances turn, and the uglier pieces of the Boston political machine look to put an end to Spenser’s investigation.

Aspiration, greed, and twisted dreams all focus on the old Wonderland dog track where the famous amusement park once fronted the ocean. For Spenser and Z, this simple favour to Henry will become the fight of their lives.

pETEr murpHYA denounced President, her kidnapped daughter, a Hindu extremist group and the threat of nuclear war: America is once again thrown into turmoil in Peter Murphy’s sequel to Removal.

As Ellen Trevathan settles into her presidency, she feels confident to come out as a lesbian to the press, an announcement that unleashes a storm of criticism against her authority. Her personal life becomes increasingly unstable when her daughter, Dani, is kidnapped by a Hindu extremist group, Svatantra Kashmir (SK). Director of the FBI, Kelly Smith, is called in to investigate and is soon immersed in a situation with far wider implications.

Under pressure to comply with orders made by SK, Ellen has to tackle the threat of nuclear war between India and Pakistan and ensure the safety of her daughter. As the crisis escalates, public duty and personal concerns are thrown into conflict. The severity of the situation demands that one has to be sacrificed, and only Ellen can choose…

J pAuL HEnDErSOnNancy Skidmore has Alzheimer’s and Eugene Chaney III once more a purpose in life – to end hers.

When the moment for Chaney to take Nancy to her desired death in Coffeeville arrives she is unexpectedly admitted to the secure unit of a nursing home and he is constrained to call upon the help of his two remaining friends: Bob Crenshaw, a man who has been officially dead for forty years, and Jack Guravitch, a disgraced weatherman in the throes of a mid-life crisis.

They ‘kidnap’ Nancy and drive to Mississippi in a stolen tour bus once owned by Paul McCartney. Along the way they are joined by a young orphan boy called Eric who is searching for his only surviving family member – an exotic dancer named Susan.

Last Bus to Coffeeville is a funny story about sad things, a chronicle of lives that have jumped the tracks, and a tale of endings and new beginnings.

J PAUL HENDERSON was born and grew up in Bradford, West Yorkshire, gained a Master’s degree in American Studies and travelled to Afghanistan. He worked in a foundry, as a bus conductor, trained as an accountant and then, when the opportunity to return to academia arose, left for Mississippi, returning four years later with a doctorate in 20thC US History and more knowledge of Darlington Hoopes than was arguably necessary. (Hoopes was a Pennsylvanian socialist and the last presidential candidate of the American Socialist Party). American History departments were either closing or contracting, so he opted for a career in publishing, most of which was spent selling textbooks, in one position or other, for John Wiley & Sons. He lives in a house in England, drives a car and owns a television set. And that’s about it.

If you enjoyed reading any of the following: The Hundred-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out of the Window and Disappeared by Jonas Jonasson, The Man Who Forgot His Wife by John Farrell, The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry by Rachel Joyce, Vernon God Little by DBC Pierre, Any Human Heart by William Boyd and will admit to kind of liking Forrest Gump then this book is for YOU!

nICK rEnnISOnAccording to Apsley Cherry-Garrard, one of the men who went to Antarctica with Captain Scott, ‘Polar exploration is at once the cleanest and most isolated way of having a bad time that has ever been devised.’ Despite this there has never been a shortage of volunteers willing to endure the bad times in pursuit of the glory that polar exploration sometimes brings.

Nick Rennison’s compelling book tells the memorable stories of the men (and occasionally women) who have risked their lives by entering the white wastelands of the Arctic and the Antarctic.

In the North, he looks at the great, lost expedition of Sir John Franklin and the many attempts to discover the fate of its missing crew. He examines the achievements of the legendary Norwegian explorer Fridtjof Nansen and wonders whether or not the American Robert Peary really did reach the North Pole in 1909.

In the South, he charts the history of the exploration of Antarctica from the first sighting of the continent by a Russian expedition in 1820 to the science and tourism of today. He investigates the tales of Scott, Shackleton and Amundsen and the heroic age of Antarctic exploration, and revisits the tragic story of the race for the Pole.

He also analyses the hold that the polar regions have often had on the imaginations of artists and writers in the last two hundred years and looks at the paintings, films and literature that they have inspired.

The fascination with the North and South Poles is as strong today as it ever was and this absorbing book brings the history of their exploration vividly to life.

NICK RENNISON is a writer, editor and bookseller. He has published books on a wide variety of subjects from Sherlock Holmes to London’s blue plaques. He is a regular reviewer for the Sunday Times and for BBC History magazine. His titles for Pocket Essentials include Roget: The Man Who Became a Book and Robin Hood: Myth, History and Culture.

GOrDOn KErrA Short History of Brazil examines the events that have led to Brazil’s ascendancy, looking at the indigenous peoples who populated the territory until its discovery in 1500 and chronicling the tempestuous years since, leading to the economic miracle of recent years. It covers the three centuries of Portuguese colonial rule when sugar became the main export, produced with the help of around three million slaves who were forced to make the deadly crossing of the Atlantic from Africa. It describes how Brazil declared independence from Portugal as a monarchy in 1822, the monarchy being replaced by a republic in 1889, and details the pattern of boom and bust in the Brazilian economy since then, covering the lives of some of the authoritarian rulers that seized power along the way.

Finally, A Short History of Brazil looks at the many difficulties Brazil faces in the 21st century – the devastating social problems resulting from its dramatic economic inequality and the often ruthless exploitation of the country’s natural resources which is a topic of major concern for the entire world.

GOrDOn KErrThe First World War, lasting four years, from 1914 to 1918, was without parallel, the first true global conflict in which all of the earth’s great powers participated.

A Short History of the First World War tells the story of this cataclysmic event describing the background to war, the international rivalries and conflicts of the previous decades that led to the nations of Europe forming virtual armed camps, the relentless build-up of military and naval hardware that characterised the early years of the 20th century and the great figures who tried to prevent conflict or enthusiastically pushed for it.

A Short History of the First World War provides a superb introduction to the events of this epochal conflict at a time when the world will be commemorating the 100th anniversary of its outbreak and remembering the millions who lost their lives in it.

THE pOCKET ESSEnTIAL GuIDE TO EurOpEAn CrImE fICTIOn, fILm & TV

BArrY fOrSHAWIt’s not just the Scandinavians. The Anglo-American domination of the crime fiction genre has been under siege by Nordic noir for quite some time, but another juggernaut is crashing its way into the field – the astonishingly varied and exciting crime fiction streaming out of the continental countries: France, Germany, Austria, Italy, Spain, Greece and others, along with a host of edgy, uncompromising new films and TV shows taking the phenomenon to even more stratospheric levels.

Examining and celebrating this exhilarating body of criminal work is the UK’s leading crime specialist (in fiction and film), Barry Forshaw, who brings to the continental countries the enthusiasm and expertise he has previously shown when writing about Scandinavian crime fiction. From important early writers such as Georges Simenon to more recent giants such as Andrea Camilleri, all the key names (and many new and lively talents) are here in this perfect guide… and shopping list for readers.

BARRY FORSHAW is a renowned expert on European, Scandinavian and general crime fiction, who edits Crime Time, writes for newspapers and regularly appears in ITV and BBC TV documentaries. He has also been Vice Chair of the Crime Writers’ Association. His latest books are Nordic Noir: The Pocket Essential Guide to Scandinavian Crime Fiction, Film and TV, British Crime Film, British Gothic Cinema and Death in a Cold Climate: A Guide to Scandinavian Crime Fiction. Other work includes British Crime Writing: An Encyclopedia, The Rough Guide to Crime Fiction and Guns for Hire: The Modern Adventure Thriller, along with books on Italian cinema and the first biography of Stieg Larsson. His forthcoming books include a study of Thomas Harris and The Silence of the Lambs.

nOrDIC nOIr THE pOCKET ESSEnTIAL GuIDE TO SCAnDInAVIAn CrImE fICTIOn, fILm & TV

Nordic Noir anatomises the nigh-obsessive appeal of the subject and highlights every key book, film and TV show. For both the beginner and the aficionado, this is a hugely informative, highly accessible guide (and shopping list) for an essential crime genre.

SEAn mArTInCatharism was the most successful heresy of the Middle Ages. Flourishing principally in the Languedoc and Italy, the Cathars taught that the world is evil and must be transcended through a simple life of prayer, work, fasting and non-violence. They believed themselves to be the heirs of the true heritage of Christianity going back to apostolic times, and completely rejected the Catholic Church and all its trappings, regarding it as the Church of Satan. Cathar services and ceremonies, by contrast, were held in fields, barns and in people’s homes and found widespread popularity among peasants and artisans. Cathars respected women who played a major role in the movement.

Alarmed at the success of Catharism, the Church founded the Inquisi-tion and launched the Albigensian Crusade to exterminate the heresy, which was the first Crusade to be directed against fellow Christians, and was also the first European genocide. With the fall of the Cathar fortress of Montségur in 1244, Catharism was largely obliterated, although the faith survived into the early fourteenth century.

VICTOrIA CArOLAnIn 1914 at the beginning of the war, Britain’s maritime supremacy had remained unchallenged for around a hundred years. Many expected another Battle of Trafalgar but advances in technology saw a very different kind of warfare with the widespread use of mines, submarines and torpedoes.

WW1 at Sea examines the events that led to war and the naval arms race between Britain and Germany. It traces the events of the war at sea looking at the major battles as well as the effects of unrestricted submarine warfare and the sinking of the Lusitania. It also profiles key figures such as Fisher, Beatty, Tirpitz and Graf von Spee.

VICTROIA CAROLAN is a cultural historian specialising in maritime history and film. She has recently completed her doctoral thesis, British Maritime History, National Identity and Film 1900-1960 at Queen Mary, University of London. She is also the author of the Pocket Essential: Nelson

BrIAn J. rOBBThis critical history of Doctor Who covers the 50 years of the series, from the creation of the show to its triumphant return as Britain’s #1 TV drama.

Opening with an in-depth account of the creation of the series within the BBC of the early 1960s, each decade of the show is tackled through a unique political and pop cultural historical viewpoint, exploring the links between contemporary Britain and the stories Doctor Who told, and how such links kept the show popular with a mass television audience. This new edition also analyses the new series to reveal what has made it so popular and is published to coincide with the 50th anniversary of the first episode on November 23, 1963.
