Old Title Deeds of County Louth:

Further Dundalk Deeds: Dowdallshill

1808-1819 By Noel Ross

This further instalment of abstracts of the deeds of the former Roden estate deals with the

Dowdallshill area. The leases were all for one life or for twenty-one years should the named person

die before the expiry ofthat period. The lives were the Hon. Thomas Henry Foster of Coll?n, died

1843 (8 leases, 1808), Mathew Fortescue of Stephenstown, died 1845 (8 leases, 1809 and 2 leases,

1819), Chichester Fortescue of Glyde Farm, died 1826 (26 leases, 1819) and Walter Steele of

Dublin, died 1826 (15 leases, 1819). All areas are given in Irish plantation measure.

Each lease has a marginal map at the scale of 210 feet to an inch, the surveyors in 1808 and

1809 were John Birch and Son while those in 1819 were by James Frain whose work is much

superior to that of Birch.

The sixteen leases made in 1808-9 state the occupations of the tenants: 8 labourers, 3 black

smiths, 2 brogue makers, 1 butcher, 1 farmer and 1 nailer; unfortunately the 1819 leases do not

continue this practice. Of the forty-three leases made in that year only one

occupation is given,

that of yeoman.

Since the parties on the landlord's side are the same in all these leases they

are not repeated

after the first entry. The letter and number(s) in square brackets appear on the leases and were

obviously part of the estate's filing system.

There is no evidence that any of these leases (or the forty-one Seatown leases previously

published1) were

registered.
