• In GENESIS we meet a Sovereign Creator with a plan from
beginning to end.
• In EXODUS we meet a Redeemer who knows the way through the
wilderness.
• In LEVITICUS we learn how to be holy.
• NUMBERS warns against getting lost in life through unbelief.
• DEUTERONOMY commands we teach our children to love the
Lord will all their hearts.
• JOSHUA commands we be strong and courageous, for God will
never leave or forsake us.
• In JUDGES we see the downward spiral of sin and upward cycle of
mercy.
• In RUTH we learn to build our homes for God in turbulent times.
• FIRST AND SECOND SAMUEL bring us to the throne room
of the king.
• FIRST AND SECOND KINGS show us kings may fall and
nations falter but God is still in control.
• According to FIRST AND SECOND CHRONICLES, we must
pray, seek God’s face, and turn from our wicked ways.
• EZRA teaches us to seek the Lord in prayer, submit to His Word,
and advance His cause.
• NEHEMIAH shows us how to be leaders and partners in the
Lord’s work.
• ESTHER shows how God’s unseen hand orchestrates human
affairs in “such a time as this.”
• The book of JOB opens with buffeting but ends with blessing, for
our Redeemer lives.
• The PSALMS inspire us to make a joyful noise to the Lord all the
earth!
• The PROVERBS inspire us to practice daily wisdom and godly
fear.
• ECCLESIASTES shows us that life is meaningless without God.
• SONG OF SOLOMON shows us marriage is meaningless
without love.
• ISAIAH trumpets the Suffering Savior, the Prince of Peace, and
the joy of mounting up with eagles’ wings.
• JEREMIAH shows us to persevere in ministry, even when our
efforts appear futile.
• In LAMENTATIONS, God’s compassions never fail; they are
new every morning.
• EZEKIEL shows us how to see God’s majesty even in a land of
exile.
• DANIEL’S theme is the Most High rules over the affairs of the
human race.
• HOSEA’S theme is God’s love is greater than the sins of the human
heart.
• JOEL demonstrates how God restores the years the locusts have
eaten.
• AMOS tells us to be honest, letting justice roll down like a river and
righteousness as a mighty stream.
• According to OBADIAH, God deals with those who harm His
people.
• According to JONAH, God deals with those who run from His will.
• MICAH challenges us to do justly, love mercy, and walk humbly
with God.
• NAHUM reminds us the Lord has His way in the whirlwind.
• HABAKKUK reminds us to rejoice in the Lord even when there’s
no fruit on the vine.
• ZEPHANIAH reminds us of a God who judges and a Father who
rejoices over us with singing.
• HAGGAI exhorts us to finish the task assigned us.
• ZECHARIAH tells us to complete the work God gives us, for the
Day of the Lord is near.
• MALACHI shakes us from spiritual apathy to genuine worship
and worthy living.
N E W T E S T A M E N T
• MATTHEW introduces the Messiah, Son of David, the Son of
Abraham.
• MARK reveals the urgency of the mission of Him who said, “Follow
Me, and I will make you fishers of men.”
• LUKE gives us an orderly account of the Gospel so we’ll know the
certainty of what we believe.
• JOHN says, “For God so loved the world that He gave His only
begotten Son.”
• The book of ACTS is all about turning the world upside down.
• The book of ROMANS is about the message that turns the world
upside down—justification by grace through faith.
• FIRST AND SECOND CORINTHIANS tell us how to have
healthy congregations.
• GALATIANS insists we accept no other Gospel.
• EPHESIANS catalogues our riches in Christ.
• PHILIPPIANS recommends joy and contentment whatever state
we’re in.
• COLOSSIANS exalts Christ with preeminence over all things.
• FIRST AND SECOND THESSALONIANS anticipate Christ’s
coming.
• FIRST AND SECOND TIMOTHY show us how to build God’s
church till He comes.
• TITUS tells us God’s work must be well-ordered and His workers
self-controlled.
• PHILEMON teaches that Christian forgiveness knows no
boundaries.
• HEBREWS says we must run with perseverance, looking to Jesus,
our great High Priest.
• According to JAMES, we must care for widows and orphans and
remain unspotted from the world.
• FIRST AND SECOND PETER tell us to walk in Christ’s
footsteps, always ready to explain our hope to a hopeless world.
• FIRST, SECOND, AND THIRD JOHN exhort us to walk in the
light as He is in the light.
• JUDE commands we contend earnestly for the faith once for all
delivered to the saints.
• And the book of REVELATION teaches us to pray: “Even so,
come, Lord Jesus!”
And that’s what the Bible means!
