1. Introduction
1.1 Viharaya
Ananda College is established by the Buddhist Theosophical Society on 01st
November 1886. Originally it was known as English Buddhist School, describing
its stated intention of providing English instruction to Buddhist students who would
otherwise have had to go to a missionary school in order
to get an English education.
With the increase of the students, the need for a more
spacious Viharaya arose. As a result, the principal of the
college Mr K. H. Meththananda decided to obtain the
government financial support and other donations to
build a new Vihara Mandiraya in the school premises.
Late Prime Minister, Hon. Dudly Senanayake has laid the
foundation stone on 29th January 1953 for the purpose.
The model of the “Mulagandhakuti Viharaya” has been
replicated when designing the building and the Buddha
statue has been designed by Venerable Kalasoori
Mapalagama Vipulasara Thero. Late Governor,
Honourable William Goppallawa handed over the
Viharaya to the School on 06th March 1969.
Today Ananda College stands to be one of the greatest
Buddhist schools in Asia, with a student population exceeding 5000 in all 13 grades
of primary & secondary education on a campus of over 20 acres. The academic staff
of 200 + is led by the Principal, Mr. B.A. Abeyaratne. Over the years, Ananda has
produced notable alumni and thus contributed immensely to Sri Lanka.
