OCTOBER 2019 Oktoberfest Join us this month as we celebrate Oktoberfest on Oct. 15 at 3 p.m. There will be fun, food, drinks, entertainment, dancing and decorations. Here are a few Oktoberfest facts: The first Oktoberfest was held to honor the marriage of Prince Ludwig and Therese of Saxe-Hildburghausen in 1810. Now, that’s what we call a wedding party! You can’t stop beer pouring! In 200 years, Oktoberfest has only been cancelled 24 times. The causes were mostly due to the war and cholera epidemics. Albert Einstein once worked as an electrician and helped to set up one of the beer tents in 1896. Since 1950, the festival has only started after the official gun salute and the mayor shouting “O’ zapft is!” (“It’s tapped!”) and offering the first mug to the Minister- President of the State of Bavaria. Only after that, the festival can start. Door Decorating Contest During the month of October, work on decorating your door area in a fall/ Halloween theme, and on Halloween day we will all vote and pick the winner. It will be a ton of fun and will make our community very festive. Enjoy! Halloween Party Get your costume and Halloween spirit ready as we will have a nice party on Halloween day. There will be plenty of fun treats to eat and drinks to drink. See you there! Who’s Whooo of Owls Symbols of wisdom and insight, owls are found throughout pop culture as characters who exhibit these qualities. Consider a few feathered favorites: Friend Owl — He grumbles about noisy critters keeping him awake and warns about the dangers of getting “twitterpated,” otherwise known as falling in love. But Friend Owl is a wise mentor to the forest animals in the 1942 Disney cartoon “Bambi.” Mr. Owl — This candy mascot was first seen in a 1970 TV commercial attempting to answer the age-old question, “How many licks does it take to get to the Tootsie Roll center of a Tootsie Pop?” Woodsy Owl — Created in 1970 by the U.S. Forest Service, Woodsy taught youngsters to “Give a Hoot, Don’t Pollute.” He continues to make appearances to share his latest eco-friendly slogan: “Lend a Hand, Care for the Land.” Hoots the Owl — Since his debut on “Sesame Street” in 1985, this jazzy Muppet musician has played his saxophone alongside famous entertainers such as Little Richard, Wynton Marsalis and John Legend. Hedwig — Given to Harry Potter for his 11th birthday, this snowy owl served her owner by delivering his messages. Hedwig’s intelligence and loyalty also proved to be valuable assets during the boy wizard’s magical adventures. Our Lake Forest Family Dear Lake Forest Friends, Family, and Residents I hope you have a great month of October. Thank you so much for making this community so special and lovely. Remember, if you need me for anything, know that I am here for you. Tanya Ingram, Executive Director
