Welcome to the Little Theatre Company’s production of Oklahoma! in the Palace Theatre, Westcliff.

We are delighted to be back here, as the Palace Theatre was our “home” for many years.

Those of you who regularly support our shows will have noticed that we have changed our name

slightly: we were The Little Theatre Club – we are now the Little Theatre Company. So in case you

are confused, it is still us – the LTC!

We last presented Oklahoma! in 1998 – it was our penultimate show at the Palace Theatre – and

so it is extremely fitting that it is our first show back here. It is one of our favourites as it has all

the qualities of a classic musical. All of the songs are memorable, there is a love story, a meaty

plot involving Jud, a comic sub-plot with Ado Annie, Will and Ali Hakim and there are wonderful

production numbers for the chorus.

Those of you who saw our 1998 production may remember seeing a certain young man in our

chorus who went on to pursue a professional career and has recently achieved great success as

Joseph in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s revival in the West End: I’m obviously talking about Lee Mead.

We are very proud that Lee was a member of our company for that show and delighted for him that

he has done so well – a richly deserved success.

So sit back and enjoy the show, but watch carefully – you may see

somebody on stage who is destined for greater things and you can say that

you saw them first in the LTC’s production of Oklahoma!

Act I On a radiant summer morning in Indian Territory not long after the turn of the century, Aunt Eller sits on her porch churning butter and looking out over her farmstead. Curly, a local ranch hand, comes to call. Curly and Eller’s niece, Laurey, have a lot in common – both are equally smitten with the other, and both are too proud and stubborn to admit it. When Curly grandly offers to take Laurey to the box social that evening, Laurey claims that he can’t escort her in style and refuses to believe that he has rented a classy rig for the occasion. Jud Fry, Laurey’s hired hand, settles the matter by announcing that he will take her to the social and because she is scared of Jud, she is too frightened to turn him down.

Laurey’s friend, Ado Annie, is caught between two fellows too. Will Parker has just returned from Kansas City where he earned $50 in a rodeo – the exact sum Ado Annie’s father, Andrew Carnes, told Will he had to come up with if he wanted to marry her. However, during Will’s absence Ado Annie has become transfixed by the Persian peddler man, Ali Hakim. Ado Annie may not know which way to turn but her father does – Ali Hakim has been so forward with Annie that nothing short of a shotgun wedding will do!

Laurey is confused about her love for Curly, and about Jud, but has used his invitation just to make Curly jealous. After a short reconciliation between the two, Curly goes to see Jud in his smokehouse. Curly paints a beautiful picture of just how popular Jud would be – at his own funeral and there is an angry confrontation

about Laurey. Feeling mocked, alone now in his room, Jud confronts himself, his bleak existence that fills him with anger and violence.

Laurey still wants to clear her mind between Curly and Jud; she drifts into a dream in which she is to marry Curly, but he is killed by Jud, who abducts her. As she wakens, both men arrive, and Jud hauls her off to the party, leaving Curly dejected.

Act II At the box social that night lots of men bid for Laurey’s hamper but, as the bidding rises, so does the tension as Jud and Curly square off. Curly sells his saddle, his horse and then even his gun to raise enough cash to buy the hamper and the right to escort Laurey, which frustrates and angers Jud. When Jud corners Laurey in the barn later on, her frightened calls for help bring Curly to her side. Jud runs off, and finally, Laurey and Curly confess their love for each other. Three weeks later, Laurey and Curly are married. Gertie Cummings, an annoying flirt who couldn’t get her hands on Curly, has managed to also snare a husband – Ali Hakim. Will and Ado Annie are hitched as well and everyone is celebrating. The wedding festivities pall, however, when Jud Fry stumbles in, uninvited, unwelcome and drunk. He gets into a fight with Curly and, in the ensuing melée, the drunken Jud falls on his own knife and is killed. Curly’s friends don’t want him to have to spend his wedding night in jail and so, a trial is quickly held on the spot and Curly is acquitted. Curly and Laury drive off on their honeymoon, ‘in a surrey with a fringe on top’.

Tim Cater (Director). Tim joined LTC in 2004 and has enjoyed being in a variety of shows, including Seven Brides for Seven Brothers, Hello Dolly, Kiss Me Kate and Copacabana. Oklahoma! is Tim’s second crack at the Directing whip having first produced Guy’s and Dolls back in 2006. Tim would like to thank his assistants Dave Lobley and Antony Smith for all their hard work and determination to produce a good show and looks forward to one day performing in one of their shows. Tim would also like to thank Paul Day and Bev Onslow for all their hard work in making this a truly spectacular show – thanks you two, could not have done it without you!! Tim would like to dedicate Oklahoma! to his (soon to be) one year old daughter Mia, who is bound to one day have her face in one of LTC’s programmes!

Dave Lobley (Assistant Director). This is Dave’s first production role for LTC. He has really come to appreciate the massive amount of unseen time and work that production teams put in and has resolved never to whine at a director, choreographer, MD or stage manager again (yeah! like that’s gonna last). He has learned a lot and would like to thank Tim for the opportunity and wish him and the team all the best for the show.

Antony Smith (Assistant Director). This is Antony’s Co-Directing debut under the watchful eye of his good friend Tim. Antony has been a member of LTC for a number of years playing various roles the most recent being Benny Southstreet in Guys & Dolls. Antony’s Co-Directing of this show has not stopped him treading the boards, as he can be found joining various chorus numbers.

Paul Day (Chrous Master). Paul started his musical career at the age of 8 playing flute and guitar. He has been assistant musical director for the Eastwood Chorale for many years, and in 1995 was involved in a two week tour of the Seychelles playing flute and singing in the choir. Paul has MD’d for Rayleigh Operatic, Thundersley Operatic and Ingatestone Operatic societies and was involved with Rainbow2000 for many years. Paul has also arranged and directed a number of concerts and fund raising cabarets. More recently Paul has joined the Southend Philharmonic Orchestra playing flute and percussion when ‘persuaded’!

Beverley Onslow (Choreographer). Beverley has been associated with LTC for many years. As a youngster, her first appearance was in our 1956 production of South Pacific. She has subsequently taken various roles on stage as well as choreographing many of our productions

including Oklahoma! (twice!), The Pirates of Penzance (twice!), not to mention Annie, The King and I and The Will Rogers Follies. She would like to thank Tim Cater for his unfailing courtesy, Jim Wolfe for his valued help with rope spinning techniques and above all the cast of this show for their enthusiasm and good humour.

Laura Wilson (Assistant Choreographer). Laura has been a member of The Little Theatre Company since the age of 15 after first appearing on stage as a child in Carousel and Will Rogers Follies. She has enjoyed such roles as Peggy in 42nd Street and Lola La Mar in our recent production of Copacabana. Laura has been actively involved in the choreography of many shows and has loved working alongside the production team to produce this lively and creative performance of the old favourite Oklahoma!

Paul Green (Musical Director). Paul is delighted to be back at the Palace Theatre where he first performed as a 12 year old with the Westcliff Operatic Society as Annie’s younger brother in Annie Get Your Gun. He first played in the orchestra as a teenager for Little Theatre Club in South Pacific in 1956. Oklahoma! is his 22nd show as MD for LTC and after counting up all his old programmes makes this his 99th show. We wish him a happy return to the Palace pit.

Doreen Goodfellow (Wardrobe Mistress). Doreen has directed numerous shows in the past, most recently Pirates of Penzance. Doreen also regularly takes on chorus mistress and wardrobe for many of our productions and is also out club secretary, unfortunately she recently broke her hip and has been out of action for a while so Joan and Carla have stepped up to help costume the show. Get well soon Doreen.

Joan Hubbard (Wardrobe Assistant). Since joining LTC more than five years ago Joan has made and altered costumes for many shows and is more than happy to help again with Oklahoma!, particularly as Doreen is temporarily out of action. She would like to wish everyone good luck with show.

Ian Gilbert (Stage Director). Ian originally trained at Rose Bruford Technical Theatre College and has returned after his debut success with Copacabana, to stage manage the Little Theatre Company’s production of Oklahoma! He spent his youth in the lime light and for the last five years has been treading the boards in a back stage capacity. He has worked throughout the South-East and London’s West End, but loves working with his old society here in semi-sunny Southend.

Sally Lightfoot – Aunt Eller. Sally has been a member of the LTC for 32 years and in that time has directed, been Chorus Mistress and taken leading roles for many shows. However, she has a reputation for playing battleaxes in LTC productions – the Duchess in Me and My Girl, Sweet Sue in Some Like it Hot, Ruth in The Pirates of Penzance and Thelma in our Farndale comedies. Indeed, she has just finished playing Thelma as Macbeth in our recent Farndale production! Sally is delighted to be reprising the role of Aunt Eller, which she played when the LTC last presented Oklahoma! in 1998.

Scott Roche – Curly. This is Scott’s first show with LTC, he was a member of Rainbow 2000 where he enjoyed playing many principle roles including: Ugly (Honk), Tin Man (Wizard of Oz) , Hero (Funny Thing Happened...Forum), Benny Southstreet (Guys & Dolls) and Alberto Bertorelli (’Allo ’Allo) to name a few. He has been singing since the age of 5 and has also taken lead roles in concert versions of; Jesus Christ Superstar, Joseph & the amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat and Les Misérables as well as undertaking two One night only solo concerts. Thanks to Tim and everyone at LTC for such a warm welcome and the chance to take part in a great show. Thanks to Rachel & Jack for their support and patience.

Carla Reynolds – Laurey. Carla’s first show with LTC was Little Shop of Horrors in 1996 where she played Crystal. She has since enjoyed

playing principal roles and chorus in many shows including Calamity in Calamity Jane, Grace in Annie and Hattie in Kiss Me Kate. Carla is thrilled to be back after having a break to have her first child Mia and is excited to be lucky enough to reprise the role of Laurey that she played 10 years ago!

Lee Jackson – Jud Fry. This is Lee’s first performance with LTC and he is very much looking forward to working with the cast and crew for Oklahoma! Previous operatic performances include: Nicely Nicely (Guys & Dolls), Nathan Detroit (Guys & Dolls), Gangster 1 (Kiss me Kate), Pseudolus (Funny thing Happened on the way to the Forum), Paul Bland (Eating Raoul), Fred (Things Ain’t what they used to be) and The Lion (The Wizard of Oz). Lee would like to note that Scott Roche got in first with the thank you’s though Lee thought of them first!

Sarah Mummery – Ado Annie. Sarah joined LTC in May 2002 just in time to be in the chorus for their November production of Oliver. Since then she has been lucky enough to have had parts in Anything Goes (Reno Sweeney), Calamity Jane (Adelaide Adams), Guys and Dolls (Miss Adelaide) and most recently Conchita Alvarez in our 2007 show Copacabana. This marks Sarah’s 12th show with the company and she is extremely excited to be playing such a wonderful character as Ado Annie.

Darren Harper – Will Parker. Darren has been with the Little Theatre Company for 9 years and has appeared in all but 3 of our musical productions in that time. He has played several principal parts over the years, including Billy Crocker (Anything Goes), Cornelius Hackl (Hello Dolly) and his favourite role to date, Bill Snibson (Me & My Girl). After taking an 18 month break from the stage, he returned to play the leading role of Tony Forte, in our last production, Copacabana.

Bradley Green – Ali Hakim. This is Brad’s second show with LTC. Over the years he has performed many varied roles in a great number of shows including: Nicely Nicely (Guys & Dolls), Doody (Grease), Francis Fryer (Calamity Jane), Reuben (Joseph), Quack (Lust), Bullfrog (Honk!), Hysterium (A funny thing....Forum), René (’Allo ’Allo), Ginger (Eating Raoul), Seymour (Little Shop of Horrors), Bishop of Basingstoke (Jekyll & Hyde) and The Big Bopper (Heaven can wait). He received the Brentwood Theatre Award for ‘Best Actor in a Musical’ for Honk! and Guys & Dolls. His performance of Quack (Lust) can be heard on the Cast Recording of the show. He would like to thank Tim Cater for his support and enthusiasm.

Loulou Clark – Gertie Cummings. Loulou has been involved with dancing from an early age and first performed with LTC as a child in Will Rogers Follies back in 1996. Since becoming a member of LTC two years ago, Loulou has

enjoyed dancing in four shows with us and choreographed our last show Copacabana and our award winning Kiss me Kate in 2006. Trying something different in Oklahoma!, Lou is thrilled to be playing Gertie Cummings, her first role with the club and is having great fun taunting her friends in the cast with ‘that laugh!’

Dave Lobley – Andrew Carnes. This is Dave’s 7th show for LTC. He was shocked not to be cast as Curly the romantic lead. However he is very happy to be playing cantankerous old hick Andrew Carnes as it’s a role that needed no direction. Tim just said ‘be yourself’. Dave would especially like to thank the rest of the male members of the company for not auditioning. Previous roles include Officer O’Malley (Hello Dolly), Nathan Detroit (Guys and Dolls), Paul (Kiss Me Kate), Roger Hampton (Murder in the Wings), Sergeant of Police (Pirates of Penzance) and Rico Castelli (Copacabana).

Jamie Redgate – Ike Skidmore. This is only Jamie’s second show with the Little Theatre Company, but he has been performing in local theatre groups throughout the last two decades. Jamie has been fortunate to have played many roles during this time including; Scarecrow (The Wizard of Oz), Rick (A slice of Saturday Night), Perchik (Fiddler on the Roof) and Danny Gilmartin (Calamity Jane). His dream role would be to play Judas in Jesus Christ Superstar. Jamie is currently learning to play the guitar and hopes to one day, write his own musical, (maybe LTC will perform it)!

Kane Davis – Fred. Kane has been a member of LTC since he was a child, performing in such shows as Will Rogers Follies, Copacabana, Guys and Dolls and Seven Brides for Seven Brothers. Kane has also appeared in two plays with LTC, Murder in the Wings and The Farndale’s production of Macbeth which he thoroughly enjoyed and hopes to continue. As a child he performed in the west end shows Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, Oliver and Whistle Down the Wind. As long as he can remember he has always had a passion for performing arts.

Chris Jolly – Slim. Chris has been a member of LTC since 2005 and has enjoyed roles such as Ralph in Kiss Me Kate, and most recently a Copa Boy in Copacabana (his first proper dancing part!). He is a former member of East Essex Players, where he performed as a British Airman in the classic comedy ’Allo ’Allo, as well as other shows. The only other lead role was Bernardo in West Side Story performed by Belfairs High School.

Paul Allright – Cord Elam. Since joining LTC in 1984 Paul has enjoyed performing in many shows including taking lead roles in She Loves Me, Oklahoma, Guys and Dolls, Mack and Mabel, Kiss Me Kate and most recently as the Pirate King in The Pirates of Penzance.

Barry Jones – Joe. Barry has been with LTC since 2003; his principal roles include Big Jule (Guys & Dolls), Gerald Bolingbroke (Me and My Girl) and Danny Gilmartin (Calamity Jane). He is a former member of The Benfleet Operatic Society, where he performed as Fyedka (Fiddler on the Roof) and Big Jule (for the first time!). On a more classical theme, he appeared as Liberto in Monteverdi’s The Coronation of Poppea with The Essex Opera Workshop. For the past 3 years, Barry has served as a committee member of LTC.

Steve Wilkinson – Sam. Steve has been with LTC for 5 years and has, most recently, directed Copacabana and played Lady Macbeth in the Farndale Macbeth play. Outside LTC he works at Westcliff Boys where he also directs shows – this year has already seen The Long and The Short and The Tall and Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. He looks forward to a rest.

BUSTLady McAdden Breast Screen Unit

Where it all started...

The Lady McAdden Unit, affectionately known as BUST, has provided a major health function for women since the unit opened in 1976. The official opening followed a massive fund raising campaign which was spearheaded by the South East Essex ‘Federation of Townswomen’s Guilds’ to whom the charity remains affiliated, and supported by Lady Dorothy McAdden, wife of the late Sir Stephen McAdden, then MP for Southend East.

Why breast cancer screening is important...

Screening aims to detect cancer in its infancy. Early detection of breast abnormalities could have a significant effect on treatment and beating the disease. In addition countless women have their fears allayed. Tu
