“Be the Voice of A Child” Volunteer Recruitment Event - The Guardian ad Litem program in Okeechobee County is inviting interested community members to attend “Be the Voice of a Child” – a volunteer recruitment event being held on Friday, January 24 from noon to 1 p.m. at the Lodge at the Lake Restaurant, 1111 S. Parrot Ave., Okeechobee. Co-sponsored by the Guardian ad Litem (GAL) program of the 19th of Okeechobee and the Treasure Coast, the nonprofit supporting the GAL program. Participants at this Okeechobee gathering will have the opportunity to learn more about the GAL program, whose volunteers serve as the voices of our community’s children in court through cases involving neglect, abuse, and abandonment. In Okeechobee, the Guardian ad Litem program offers one such opportunity – to make a difference in the life of a child in need. Contact: Gail Griffith, Volunteer Recruiter, 772-871-7225 or [email protected] Bette Hughes, Guardian ad Litem volunteer, Okeechobee 863-532-9446 or [email protected]

Our winter guest are pouring into town at record pace. The launch areas around the lake are seeing heavy pressure as a result. I would like to offer several tips to those anglers that don’t launch their boat everyday and may be a little rusty . When you and your family are prepping your boat prior to launching, please do it well away from the ramp itself. Make sure that your straps are off of your motor and all of the equipment you need for your fishing day are loaded into the boat, in essence do not back down onto a loading ramp and then prep your boat for launching, so that when you back down the ramp all that you have to do is launch the boat and then go fishing. It makes the whole boat launch experience more enjoyable for everyone and keeps altercations at the ramp to a limit. Fishing around the lake has been at a peak! Speck anglers are catching daily limits of large specks in the heavy cover areas along the North shore. Jigs are outperforming minnow in the cover areas with minnow working better in open water. Bass fishing is offering something for everyone, senkos, flukes, top water baits, swim baits and flipping jigs are all drawing a lot of action. Shiners are getting eaten about as fast as you can get them in the water.

An Okeechobee newcomer Jim Doll from KY ventured onto the lake with us this week and caught a 10lb 8oz giant along with

40 other bass. It’s that time of year!
