The lights beside your bed are probably the best used lamps in your house; used daily, they are essential all year round and, what’s more, they are likely to be the most prominent accessories in your bedroom. So, when it comes to choosing bedside lamps, it’s well worth pausing for a moment to read our useful tips.


Wall lamps are an ideal solution where space is limited

or where you want to keep bedside table surfaces free.

When choosing your bedside lamps, pay attention to their height: to provide

sufficient light when reading in bed, the lower edge of the lampshade should be

well above the height at which a book is held.

If you’re decorating from scratch, it’s a good idea to install your bedside lamps on a dedicated 5amp circuit with switches either side of the bed and by the door, so you can switch the lights on as you enter the room, and then off again when you’re in bed.

Finding the perfect shade for your lamp is easy with our simple guide.

SIZE

Start by measuring your lamp base and making a note of the width and height. There are three golden rules to remember when sizing up your lampshade:

SHAPE

Now you’ve worked out the correct size of lampshade, you need to decide which shape suits the lamp best. From the classic shape of an empire-line shade to the more modern rectangular style, there’s a wide selection to choose from.

Of course, there are exceptions to every rule. Keeping everything in proportion is vital so your lamp isn’t dwarfed by a giant shade or unbalanced by a small one.

If you find that your lamp is between two sizes of lampshade, choose the larger of the two, as it is likely to sit better and it will distribute more light. A shade that is too small for a lamp looks parsimonious! The perfect sized lampshade should hide the fittings underneath without encroaching upon the lamp base itself.

Bear in mind where you will be positioning your lamp in the room. Will there be plenty of space around it, or will it be in close proximity to a wall, a piece of furniture or near the path of frequent footfall? If so, it makes sense to choose a lamp with a narrow profile and pair it with an equally narrow shade (for example a rectangular or oval shaped one) so it’s less likely to get damaged.

1. The diameter of the lampshade should be roughly

equivalent to the height of the lamp base.

2. The height of the lampshade should be approximately 2/3 of

the height of the lamp base.

3. The diameter of the lampshade should be bigger than the widest section of

the lamp base.

A general rule of thumb is that you should aim to mirror the shape of the base in your lampshade, but column lamps are the exception as they suit any shape of lampshade. If the base is tapered or round, the lampshade should be sloping and rounded, i.e. empire or drum. If the base is straight, square or rectangular, the lampshade needs to reflect the straight lines and be square or rectangular as well.


COLOUR

The colour of your shade should be dictated by personal taste and by the decor of the room it will be living in. Some people also choose to change their shades with the seasons: if you opt for a seasonal makeover then a good general rule is to go for pale, neutral hues such as Off-White and Cream in spring and summer and then change to richer, darker colours when autumn arrives. A natural toned lampshade looks good from January to December and will work in any scheme, so it’s a safe choice if you’re undecided about what colour to choose. If your lamp base features a multitude of colours, picking one and highlighting that colour in your lampshade can be really effective.

These five tips are a great start for those previously unversed in fitting a lampshade, but most of

the time, just trust your instincts; your eye will naturally know what type of lampshade looks best

with each lamp base.

MATERIAL

Depending on the style of lampshade, some fabrics make more sense than others. If you’re searching for a simple lampshade then one made from card, cotton or linen is a good choice. These plain shades will work well all year round so if you’re not likely to swap your lampshades seasonally, they are an obvious choice. If you’re after something a little more exotic, silk is a wonderful alternative, and the best choice of fabric for a pleated lampshade. The style and material of the lamp itself can also influence the fabric used for the lampshade. A base with a smooth finish might call for a contrasting lampshade with lots of texture and detail; likewise, a lampshade with a similar feel to the base will help to unify the lamp.

PATTERN

If you tend to err on the side of caution when it comes to using bold patterns in your home, lampshades are a good way to experiment with print and colour. Most of the fabrics used for our lampshades are also used on cushions as well, so it’s easy to match your shade with other accessories for a co-ordinated scheme. For a simple lamp base, such as the traditional column style, a patterned lampshade can transform a previously unremarkable lamp into a focal point. One note of caution however, don’t let your chosen shade compete with your lamp base; a show-stopping base that features multiple colours may require a more subdued lampshade, so that it remains the focus.
