Transcript of Ok, text me….. Before getting started what are some questions you have? Hopefully they can be...
•Before getting started what are some questions you have?
•Hopefully they can be answered in the workshop or they can be looked up!
• Do the clubs or your county council have a Facebook page?
• Are their youth in your county that are interested in technology but the resources aren’t available to provide activities for them?
• Do your members really read the county newsletters that come in the mail for upcoming 4-H activities? Or how do they find the information?
• How can texting and Facebook serve you and your club?
The Good……The Good……
• Facebook is a good resource for many reasons-
» Reconnect with old friends, schoolmates, 4-H connections, or colleagues
» Use as an informational resource » Free advertising » Recruiting tool » What are other goods you use it for?
The Good …….The Good …….
• Texting has a number of positives too-» Quick contact to a person verses playing
phone tag» Sending a quick message to more than
one person at a time» Sending texts by email does not cost you
anything and they can respond back to your email.
» Being able to hold a short conversation » Sharing pictures from events

The Bad…..The Bad…..
• Facebook’s evils – » Anyone can have access to some or all of
it» We feel we are in a bubble and only “our
friends” can see what has been posted » Having no privacy» Once something is posted in the internet it
is there forever » This list could go on forever! Your
thoughts or experiences?
The Bad…..The Bad…..
• For Texting – » Messages can be shared with many, not
just the one it is sent to. The person sending it has no control over that.
» Pictures can be sent to many whether intended to or not
» You or the person receiving a message can save it (this could be good or bad, depending)
» Other things you can think of?
The UglyThe Ugly
• How things can be ugly for both –» THERE IS LESS CONTROL OF YOUTH’S
COMMUNICATION IF IT IS ALLOWED!
» Anything done through technology is there forever.
» People are not careful with what is posted.
» This is a good resource for cyber/text bullying.
» The thought process is not completed before posting things, many times leads to misconceptions of things. The especially happens with pictures.
If we don’t be careful….If we don’t be careful….

Cautions that can be taken…Cautions that can be taken…
• Just have to make sure the youth know it is not a place to speak negatively, about each other or other club members or leaders, post questionable pictures or anything they don’t want seen by others.
• Personal information does not need to be shared on personal pages or those set up for the club or county, that needs to be kept to personnel.
• Make sure a personal or club site is monitored on a regular basis.
Cautions that can be taken…Cautions that can be taken…
• Remind the youth and leaders not to allow anyone to become a friend that they do not know personally. On 4-H sites it would be just for the club/county/ state 4-H program not the general public.
• For 4-H, if used as a promotional tool make sure when the site is created that there is not personal information on it. If necessary create an email address that is just for the club.
• On video’s on YouTube make sure personal information (hobbies, school names, addresses, etc) are not mentioned on the video.
• Audacity – free system to download that can be used to make recordings.
http://audacity.sourceforge.net/download/
•This can be used to record commercials or announcements for a podcast and make the recordings to go over slide shows, pictures or skits. (And it is Free!)
