WHITE PAPER Industrial acilities depend on oil/water separators to separate oil rom their waste water. While oil/water separators are a helpul component to a plant’s wastewater system, oil/water separators traditionally do not provide an efcient method o removing oil once it has been separated rom the waste stream. Traditionally, the separator industry has either used overlow skimmer pipes or weirs, or has depended upon an outside removal frm to pump o the oil. While they are inexpensive to use, skim pipes/weirs have inherent problems because there is always oil on the surace o the separator. Oil removal services are eective in removing the layer o oil, but they are expensive. They are needed continuously. and thereore they are an ongoing expense. In either case, there always will be a problem o oil on the surace o the separator. Problem  When oil is not continuously removed rom the surace o an oil/  water separat or , se veral problems occur: • Heavy rain or water ow can exceed the design o the separator and wash out the oil build-up. • Failure to remove the oil causes excessive oil build-up which increases the chance or the oil to escape and reduces the area o the separation chamber. • The oil layer prevents oxygen rom reaching the water, allowing anaerobic bacteria to grow, thus plugging the separator plates and emitting oul odors. • As the level is lowered or certain maintenance procedures, or as components are lited out, the tank  walls and int erior components become completely oil-coat ed.  Also, i the unit is completely drained re sidual oil will escape into the outlet piping and be released down stream upon reflling the separator when bringing the system back on-line. • The oil layer makes visual inspection o the coalescer and components very difcult, i not impossible. Solution Companies have tried a number o methods to remove oil rom the separators and discovered that the installation o a “oating tube” oil skimmer with the separating device would eliminate the excess oil. The unit is manuactured by Oil Skimmers Inc. o Cleveland OH. The skimmer uses a specially designed collector tube, which oats on thc surace o the water. Oil adheres to the outside o the closed looped tube, which is continuously driven across the separator’s surace and through a set o scrapers that remove oil. The oil then -gravity drains into a collection tank. Both units (the Model 5H is the same as the Model 6V but compact in size or hard-to-reach areas) are designed to operate on a continuous basis while unattended. The looped tube is long enough to cover a large skimming area and requires low maintenance. In addition to their use on new oil/water separators, a number o mounting systems are available,  whic h enabl e oi l skimme rs to be retroftted onto existing oil/water separators. Results Customers are pleased with the results o the attachment o the Model 6V and the Model 5H to their oil/water separators. By using Oil Skimmers skimming units on their separators, plants have saved time and money by not having to use the traditional oil removal methods. WHITE PAPER

Industrial acilities depend on oil/water separators to separate oilrom their waste water. While oil/water separators are a helpulcomponent to a plant’s wastewater system, oil/water separatorstraditionally do not provide an efcient method o removing oil onceit has been separated rom the waste stream.

Traditionally, the separator industry has either used overlow skimmer pipes or weirs, or has depended upon an outsideremoval frm to pump o the oil. While they are inexpensive touse, skim pipes/weirs have inherent problems because there isalways oil on the surace o the separator. Oil removal services areeective in removing the layer o oil, but they are expensive. They are needed continuously. and thereore they are an ongoingexpense. In either case, there always will be a problem o oil onthe surace o the separator.

Problem When oil is not continuously removed rom the surace o an oil/  water separator, several problems occur:

• Heavy rain or water ow can exceedthe design o the separator and washout the oil build-up.

• Failure to remove the oil causesexcessive oil build-up which increasesthe chance or the oil to escape andreduces the area o the separationchamber.

• The oil layer prevents oxygen romreaching the water, al lowinganaerobic bacteria to grow, thusplugging the separator plates andemitting oul odors.

• As the level is lowered or certainmaintenance procedures, or ascomponents are lited out, the tank walls and interior components become completely oil-coated. Also, i the unit is completely drained residual oil will escape intothe outlet piping and be released down stream upon reflling theseparator when bringing the system back on-line.

• The oil layer makes visual inspection o the coalescer andcomponents very difcult, i not impossible.

SolutionCompanies have tried a number o methods to remove oil rom theseparators and discovered that the installation o a “oating tube” oilskimmer with the separating device would eliminate the excess oil.The unit is manuactured by Oil Skimmers Inc. o Cleveland OH.

The skimmer uses a specially designed collector tube, which oats onthc surace o the water. Oil adheres to the outside o the closedlooped tube, which is continuously driven across the separator’ssurace and through a set o scrapers that remove oil. The oil then-gravity drains into a collection tank.

In addition to their use on new oil/water separators, a number o mounting systems are available, which enable oil skimmers to beretroftted onto existing oil/water separators.

ResultsCustomers are pleased with the results o the attachment o theModel 6V and the Model 5H to their oil/water separators.
