Late 2013 Platts: Asian gasoline cracks and the cash-to-paper spread fell to their lowest levels this year as rising inventories and weak regional demand weigh on market fundamentals. Indonesian imports are likely to fall to 10 million barrels in September from 11-12 million barrels in July and August – Aug, 2013
Early 2013 Platts: Asian benchmark 92 RON gasoline hit a 10 month high Thursday, due to a dearth of supply available to meet prompt demand for cargoes arriving at the end of February – Feb, 2013
Mid 2013 Platts: The supply-demand equilibrium in Asia has been knocked off balance by refinery outages in the region that have propped up demand at a time when the region's largest gasoline buyer, Indonesia, has raised imports to meet peak consumption during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan – Jul, 2013
Sharp swings in gasoline cracks reflect regional fundamentals, global dynamics
21
All-time high crack of $16.50/b
2-year low crack of $0.31/b
Key takeaways from 2013 for Asian gasoline
• 22
• The peaks in gasoline cracks in Asia are increasingly coinciding with peaks in Indonesian demand
• Spikes in Asian gasoline cracks capped by swing supplies from India, arbitrage inflows from the West
• Limited capacity in the market to absorb supply or demand shocks despite steadily rising light distillate stockpiles around the trading hub of Singapore
• Gasoline flows between US and Asia are becoming regular two-way arbitrage flows
• Market eased in the second half of the year, similar to 2012 as Indonesian demand came off besides the general winter lull in gasoline demand in US and Asia
2014: A strong start for gasoline market
• Asian gasoline cracks enter 2014 in a recovery mode from their late-2013 lows
• Singapore’s light distillate inventories hit an all-time high in March
• Strong cash differentials suggest replacement barrels remain expensive
• Refinery turnaround season to limit supplies
• Indonesia: Federal elections, Ramadan demand to boost imports
• Indian demand to heat up as elections coincide with usual summer pick up
• Summer demand in Middle East, U.S. to soak up Indian exports
23
Reforming spreads improving on weakness in naphtha market in early 2014
24
Refinery outages, peak Indonesian demand boost gasoline cracks
Lower Indonesian demand, rise in inflows into Singapore weakens gasoline cracks
Naphtha cracker T/A, heavy arbitrage inflows, LPG substitution weighs on naphtha cracks
$/bbl
Things to look out for: Key factors that could drive gasoline prices in 2014
• Indonesian Ramadan demand to coincide with peak summer demand in Asia, Middle East and the U.S.
• Japan to eliminate 400,000 b/d day of refining capacity in 1H 2014
• New 400,000 b/d Jubail refinery in Saudi Arabia to alter demand-supply balance in the Middle East
• Australian imports set to rise as 135,000 b/d Kurnell refinery shuts down in late 2014
• India to commission 300,000 b/d Paradip refinery by year end, potentially leading to more exports.
• China to add more than half a million barrel/day refining capacity in 2014
25
U.S. gasoline cracks remain a key guideline for the market in Asia
26
Winter Winter
Summer
Asian gasoline crack vs Brent futures flip into a premium to RBOB as U.S. switches to cheaper high-RVP gasoline in winter
But U.S. gasoline demand is in steady decline
27
U.S. still remains the world’s largest gasoline consumer with average sales of 8.74 million barrels/day in 2013 -- but down from 2007 peak of 9.35 million barrels/day
US is now a net exporter of finished gasoline
28
Gross US gasoline exports in December set a monthly record of 770,000 bbl/d –EIA
US net imports of gasoline and blendstocks
29
Shifting dynamics in U.S. gasoline market
30
• U.S. seen as a marginal net exporter of finished gasoline + blending components in Q4 2015 – EIA
• U.S. & Mexico combined gasoline deficit falls to 60 kb/d by 2018 from 560 kb/d now – Wood Mackenzie
Asia: The driver of global gasoline demand growth
31
Asia’s biggest gasoline importers
Indonesia: 10 million barrels/month
Australia: 1.90 million barrels/month
Vietnam: 1.70 million barrels/month
Malaysia: 3-3.50 million barrels/month
Saudi Arabia: Up to 3 million barrels/month

000's bbl/day Australia's gasoline imports
More than 70% of Australia’s gasoline imports come from Singapore, and the remaining primarily from South Korea
Australia: Already Asia’s biggest gasoil importer, due to become a major gasoline buyer as well
36
Traditionally a market dominated by oil majors but…
Large independent oil traders are spending billions to get a foothold in the rapidly growing Australian market
In February 2013, Trafigura subsidiary Puma
Energy acquired Australia transport fuel supplier
Ausfuel from private equity investor Archer
Capital making it one of the biggest independent fuel retailer in the country. Two weeks earlier Puma had acquired Neumann Petroleum's retail portfolio of more than 120 service stations in Queensland and New South Wales.
In February 2014, trading giant Vitol paid $2.60 billion to buy Shell Australia’s 120,000 bbl/d
Geelong refinery along with a network of 870 service stations in the region. Shell currently supplies 26% of the Australian retail market, mostly through the network it shares with local supermarket operator Coles.
2004: Exxon shuts 72,000 barrels/day Adelaide refinery
2012: Shell shuts 85,000 barrels/day Clyde refinery
2014: Caltex to shut 135,000 barrels/day Kurnell refinery
Key gasoline suppliers in the region
37
Chinese gasoline exports tipped to rise as new refining capacity is added
38
China is scheduled to add more than 500,000 b/d refining capacity in 2014
Worsening air quality in major cities prompts changes in fuel emission standards
India: The swing supplier at the crossroads of global gasoline trade flows
39
India: A key supplier to South East Asian gasoline market
40
India accounted for nearly 21% of Singapore’s total gasoline imports in 2013
Gasoline trade flows increasingly center around the East Asian market
41
Singapore: Growing regional demand boosts liquidity
42
Singapore light-distillate stocks hit record high of 14.30 million barrels Feb 26, 2014
Platts: Singapore, South Malaysia and Riau Islands could see a total oil, chemical terminal storage space of over 31 million cu m in the next few years, with the bulk of the new terminal space outside of city-state Singapore.
The Asian oil trading hub has had restrictions on new terminal expansion, due to limited land. In a step to overcome these limitations, the city-state will complete it's first underground oil caverns on Jurong Island late this year.
Oil storage around Singapore to peak at 31 million cu-m after 2015
Increase in storage capacity turns Malaysia into a major regional exporter

thời gian do lo ngại giá hàng hóa có thể biến động

Oil and Ethanol Market Briefing - Hanoi March 20, 2014

US Ethanol and its Impact on Asia Esther Ng, Associate Editor, Agriculture
March 20, 2014
Agenda
• 2014 – domination of US ethanol? Huge corn crop.
• What does a bumper new US corn crop and a drop the US Renewable Fuel Standard mean for the year?
• Overview of ethanol demand in the Philippines and Thailand
• US ethanol to China: Will it work?
• US ethanol to Iraq and the Middle East. New home, new market?
82
US gasoline consumption 2014
• Motor gasoline consumption grew by 100,000 barrels per day, or 1.1 percent in 2013. This is the largest increase since 2004. Stronger-than-expected growth in highway travel during the second half of the year contributed to the increase. (source: EIA)
• The EIA predicts that motor gasoline consumption in 2014 will remain unchanged as growth in highway travel slows and improvements in new-vehicle fuel economy.
• People are driving less and fuel economy has improved compared to 7 years ago. Meanwhile, next-generation biofuels have not taken off as expected.
83
• As a result, the US is at the “E10 blend wall,” the point at which the E10 fuel pool is saturated with ethanol.
• If gasoline demand continues to decline, as currently forecast, continuing growth in the use of ethanol will require greater use of higher ethanol blends such as E15 and E85.
• Under current plans, the amount of biofuel required would generate more ethanol than many engines can safely handle.
84
EPA proposes a RFS reduction
• November 2013, the US Environment Protection Agency proposed to reduce the amount of ethanol in the nation's fuel supply.
• The change would require almost 3 billion fewer gallons of biofuel to be blended into gasoline in 2014 than the law mandates.
• 15.21 billion gallons vs 18.15 billion gallons
• The proposal unlikely is to mean much for consumers at the pump. But it could affect farmers' profits for corn, the primary ethanol source.

Ethanol market in 2014
• Total global ethanol production in 2014: 71.4 -113 m cu m
• Railcar delays and rotation, higher natural gas prices for production, unexpected gasoline demand during US winter are supporting producer margins (70-80 cents/gallon) and ethanol prices in the US amid tight inventory
• Delays in Brazil crop due to weather concerns and potential blend increase from 25% to 27.5%
• Brazil will have to compete with higher US supplies, on the back of a record corn crop in the US and lower demand for sugarcane ethanol imports.
• Europe ethanol could find homes in Asia as an alternative to US ethanol?
• Thailand to return to export market?

• "Gasoline demand going forward will be driven by increasing penetration of motor vehicles, particularly in central and western China," said Victor Shum, head of IHS Consulting's downstream energy practice.
• Growth rates for gasoline could be sustained at 8% annually in the current decade.
• No significant measures aimed at curbing car ownership or gasoline consumption.
• January 2014 – implementation of the National Phase 4 standard for gasoline
• 2017 – National Phase 5 gasoline and gasoil standards
• China does not import gasoline and is currently a significant exporter, with outflows totaling 4.69 million mt 2013, but supplies could start tightening if gasoline demand maintains current growth rates.
• "Gasoline exports from China will be declining and the market domestically will basically be more balanced," Shum said.
• "It could be a situation where by end 2015-2016, China will become a small net importer of gasoline, just because of the way the refineries have been set up," said Energy Aspects’ chief oil analyst Amrita Sen.

• Some 400,000 cu m/year of fuel-grade ethanol has been going to the Persian Gulf and likely to increase.
• “When Iran opens up – they don’t have refineries – demand for refined products will increase,” said an ethanol trader.
• Iraq’s state oil company, SOMO, usually issues a yearly tender for some 1,643,000 mt of RON 92 gasoline.
• Up to 10% MTBE and/or ETBE and/or ethanol allowed.
102
Vietnam’s ethanol production
• Vietnam's oil major PetroVietnam (PV) plans to buy out its joint venture partners Itochu of Japan and Licogi 16, a local company, in the Bu Dang, Binh Phuoc ethanol plant.
• Itochu holds 49% and Licogi 16 22% in the 100 mil liter/year plant.
• The distillery which processes cassava had been offline since March 2013 due to a lack of demand. PV has a 29% share. The two partners had announced that they would like to withdraw from the venture earlier. PV said sourcing capital for the deal is a problem.
• This transaction must be seen in conjunction with the coming fuel ethanol blending obligation.
• E-5 mandate is to kick in from late 2014 in Hanoi, Haiphong, HCMC, Can Tho, Danang, Ba Ria-Vung Tau and Quang Ngai. Nation-wide from December 2015.
• Several larger plants, mainly running on cassava, have been set up by PetroVietnam and others.
• However, development of the domestic E-5 market is slow, and prices on the export markets, mainly the Philippines and South Korea are disappointing. Apart from that, only a handful domestic distributors are able to deliver fuel grades. As of early 2014, around 175 service stations were selling E-5, according to Petro Vietnam. This compares with 13,000 forecourts nationwide.
• Source: FO Licht

Mandates in Asia
• Thailand’s Alternative Energy Development Plan 2021 (consumption)
• Biodiesel 7.2 million liters/year
• Ethanol 9 million liters/year
• Advanced biofuels 3 million liters/year
• Philippines – E10 mandate & B5 mandate
• Indonesia – B10 mandate rolled out in Oct 2013
104
• Vietnam – E5 mandate in December 2014 in five major cities and nationwide by 2015
• E-10 is to start in December 2016 in Hanoi, Haiphong, HCMC, Can Tho, Danang, Ba Ria-Vung Tau and Quang Ngai with the nationwide mandate to be launched in 2017
