O’Connor High School offers a four-year comprehensive
college preparatory program with 48 college level courses
and 16 college preparatory Pre-AP courses.
The Certificate of Advanced Academics provides SDOHS students with the opportunity to showcase their academic excellence and dedication. The certificate will supplement their diploma and serve as an indication of their rigorous course work above and beyond the district requirements. It allows students to showcase college readiness, 21st century skills, and elevate themselves above Arizona’s standard high school graduates. This distinction celebrates their academic talents and commitment to excellence.
The certificate is awarded at graduation and reflects four years of advanced course work and service learning. The requirements are designed to honor truly advanced learners and acknowledge the time and dedication it takes to pursue a four-year program of advanced course work and commitment to their communities.
Expect the Best. Get the Best. Be the Best.
The Certificate of Advanced Academics values a four-year college preparatory curriculum, college readiness assessments, service learning, and academic successes in the classroom. To see the full list of requirements, please visit: http://www.dvusd.org/Page/18133
Advanced Placement courses are monitored by the New York-based College Board which also administers the PSAT and SAT college entrance exams. AP courses are rigorous classes and require analytical reading and writing. These courses are respected and may be exchanged for credit internationally. Except for the $91AP exam fee, the courses are free, and each course may yield between three and eight credits.
Many universities and colleges will grant students college credits as direct requirements, and may allow entrance into higher course levels depending upon students’ AP exam scores. Students and parents should check with their selected college/university’s admissions department and/or web page for additional information.
Students must complete summer work and should
expect a minimum of an hour of homework per night per AP
course. Students taking AP courses will earn an additional
honor point for grades of A, B, or C which will help to raise the
student’s GPA and class ranking. Additionally, AP courses are
favorable when competing for scholarships and competitive
college admissions.
Both Dual Enrollment and Advanced Placement
courses are for students who have the maturity and
work ethic to perform at a college level. Students
who have taken these courses report that they were
able to build confidence in their academic abilities,

Dual Enrollment The Dual Enrollment program is a partnership with the Rio
Salado College which began in the Valley in 1997. Students may elect to take the dual enrollment courses offered at their high school. The student not only earns high school credit, but also earns community college credits. Parents will pay approximately $81 per credit hour (most courses are three or four college credits each). The college credits are accepted at all Arizona universities, some as direct requirements and others as elective credits.
This can significantly cut college costs. Some students are
even able to enter college with enough credits to qualify as a
sophomore. Students attending out-of-state colleges will need to
check with that school’s admissions department to determine
which credits will be accepted. Dual Enrollment instructors have
a master’s degree in the subject area and are monitored by both
the school district and the college staff. Students will use a college
-level textbook and are expected to do college level work. These
courses are 100- and 200- level courses.
