Below are the first couple of stanzas of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow’s ‘Ode to Catawba’ which sang the praises of Longworth’s accomplishments.

ODE TO CATAWBA WINE By Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

(Written In Praise of Nicholas Longworth’s Catawba Wine made on the banks of the

Ohio River)

This song of mineIs a song of the VineTo be sung by the glowing embersOf wayside inns,When the rain beginsTo darken the drear Novembers.

It is not a songOf the Scuppernong,From warm Carolinian valleys,Nor the IsabelAnd the MuscadelThat bask in our garden alleys.

Nor the red Mustang,Whose clusters hangO’er the waves of the Colorado,And the fiery floodOf whose purple bloodHas a dash of Spanish bravado.

For the richest and bestIs the wine of the West,That grows by the Beautiful River,Whose sweet perfumeFills all the roomWith a benison on the giver.

Nicholas Longworth’s successes in grape growing and winemaking faltered as a result of humidity driven vine diseases and a shortage of labor wrought by the Civil War. The first winemaking chapter in southwest Ohio ended with Longworth’s death.

In the early 1970’s the Ohio River Valley again emerged as the leading region in the state’s viticultural history. New varieties were planted on Wistar Marting’s Tarula Farms near Clarksville. Those original plantings [some of which are still used by Valley Vineyards in Morrow] prompted modern pioneers to launch a revolution in Midwest winemaking. As techniques evolved additional plantings of Vinifera, or European style varietals, were also found to flourish in the climate conditions offered by the ORV.Reds like Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc are showing exceptional promise. The region is also noted for some of the nation’s finest late harvest or ‘ice wines.’

The vintners of Ohio’s first and most historic wine region invite you to travel the Ohio River Valley....visit, explore and enjoy the exceptional quality of their finest offerings.

Family fun at a working dairy farm, with homemade ice cream & cheese,
