Continuing Education in Review

August 9, 2017, MGVs spent the evening touring one of Ohio’s earliest prairie land restoration projects, The Brother Don Geiger Prairie at Mount St. John. Seeded in 1986 on a highway construction borrow pit, today the prairie is a thriving community of prairie forbs and grasses that support diverse populations of pollinators. The tour focused on plant identification skills and how to use drought-tolerant prairie plants in ecologically-beneficial landscaping projects. (2.0 CEUs for MGVs)

Cemetery and Arboretum

“Basics of Tree Hazard Identification” program was conducted by Mark Webber, Board-Certified Master Arborist at Woodland Cemetery and Arboretum on August 17

th. His presentation explains how tree defects can create dangerous

conditions that are foreseeable and preventable. (1.5 CEUs for MGVs)

Founded in 1841, Woodland Cemetery and Arboretum is one of the nation’s oldest rural garden cemeteries and a unique cultural, botanical and educational resource in the heart of Dayton. There are over 3,000 trees and 165

specimens of native Midwest woody plants on 200 acres.

“News You Can Use” Committee Reports

Nominating Committee

Hello Fellow Master Gardener Volunteers,

The nominating committee is working to fill our slate of nominees for open board positions and we need your help! In order to stabilize the board, our four officers have chosen to serve an additional year in their current positions. This includes Janet Hickey as President, Donna Zobrist as Vice President, Carol Williams as Secretary, and Joyce Zech as Treasurer. We would also like to add the position of Assistant Treasurer and, hopefully, fill this position with someone who has a financial background. This means that we will be electing committee chairpersons this year. We have found that most committees function best with co-chairs, allowing two people to share ideas and responsibilities. We have a smaller organization than we did a few years ago and we are struggling to fill these spots.

Would you think about helping us?

Our leadership for the program committee is covered, but the committee welcomes new members to work alongside the experienced members who sit on this committee. We really want those excellent continuing education programs to continue! We also have an open position for Historian. This spot has been vacant for a couple of years and would be ideal for someone who wants to remain an active volunteer, but is no longer able to participate physically at the same level they once did.

Please contact one of us if you have questions or if you want to say “Yes!”, but need a little

encouragement.
