    The Ohio Star

This block is a version of the basic nine patch block because of the

number of grid spaces in its design.

****Always add a 1/4 inch seam allowance to each pattern piece be-

    fore cutting.****

    12 total block size finished,

    12 1/2 unfinished

    Page 1

This is the Ohio Star nine patch

block is the #4 block in the

    Sampler Quilt.

Just as the Simple Nine Patch Block, the Ohio Star block will be constructed in

    three rows of three blocks.

All rows are the same height, and have similar components. Be watchful of the

placement of your fabrics so the finished design will look like the photo.

Stitch the block in rows. Then stitch the rows together to form the block, just as

the Simple Nine Patch Block was formed.

    FINISHED SIZES:

    4 inch hourglass-triangle squares

4 inch center and corner squares

    CUT SIZES:

    4 1/2 inch center square (A)

    4 1/2 inch corner squares (B)

    6 1/2 squares (C, D, & E)

    Steps:

    1. Select three to four contrasting fabrics for this block. (Note: the center

square could be a different color than the darker triangles or it could be the

    same fabric. Your choice.

    2. Cut 1 square of fabric (A) that measures 4 1/2.

    3. Cut 4 squares of fabric (B) that measure 4 1/2.

    4. Cut 2 squares of fabric (C) that measures 6 1/2.

    5. Cut 1 square each of fabric (D&E) that measures 6 1/2.

    6. Draw a diagonal pencil line across the back of both (C ) 6 1/2 squares cut in

step 4. Make sure the line goes from point to point.

    7. Combine (C ) squares with (D) and (E ) fabric squares so that the sets are face

together (C&D, C&E). Use the pencil line as a guide to stitch 1/4 on both sides

    of this line.

    8. Each double-triangle patch square should look like this:

    9. Carefully cut along the center pencil line. This creates

    four light/dark triangle squares.

    10. Open each triangle block and press

the seam to the dark side. You will

now have 4 sets of single triangle

    blocks.

    12. Draw a second pencil line across each block set. The line should be the

opposite direction of the seam line. Stitch 1/4 on each side of this drawn line.
