HEALTH OCCUPATIONSInterested in a career in the growing health industry? Ohio Hi-Point offers long-term career development opportunities in the following areas:

Health Information Technology (Enrollment Begins in July 2012!) This program offers a career path in the medical field for those that are not interested in direct patient care, but desire the stability of employment in the health care field. We offer a hands-on experience using real world technology including training in Microsoft Office and Medisoft Electronic Health Records software. Our small class size allows for optimal instruction and student success. Not only are courses close to home being located on the Bellefontaine campus, but the instructors utilize some online and web-assisted courses creating flexibility in the students schedule.ENROLLMENT REQUIREMENTS: Completed application and $20 application fee, submission of a high school transcript or GED, 4 references and BCI/FBI records check and proof of a two-step tuberculosis skin test.  Classes meet Monday through Thursday evenings from 4:30-10:00 p.m.

Medical Assisting (Available in October 2011) The Medical Assisting program prepares individuals for entry level positions as a multi-skilled healthcare assistant, providing basic level care to individuals in need. Students will learn necessary skills to function as a multi-skilled team member under the supervision of physicians, nurses and other medical professionals. Medical Assistants are typically employed in physician’s offices, clinics, and acute care facilities. Certifications will be obtained through the National Healthcare Association in Phlebotomy (CPT), and EKG (CET). Students will also be able to test for their Registered Medical Assistant (RMA). This is a 34 week evening program located in Marysville, OH.

Psychiatric Aide (Starts in April 2012!) This program prepares individuals for entry-level positions as mental health employees who provide hands-on care to people with varying degrees of mental illnesses and/or developmental disabilities. This is a 300 clock hour daytime program that will be offered at the Kenton North campus.

HEALTH OCCUPATIONSShort-Term Training Options

State Tested Nurse Aide (STNA)This program prepares individuals to give care to ill and elderly patients in long term care facilities. The basic techniques needed to function as a nursing assistant are addressed and students are prepared to take the state examination. Employment opportunities exist in extended care, acute care facilities and in home health care agencies.

PhlebotomyThis program prepares students in basic phlebotomy procedures, including skin punctures, venipunctures, arterial punctures and bleeding times. Routine duties relating to laboratory procedures, obtaining specimens and testing are addressed.

Independent Provider To provide an overview of the conditions, requirements and opportunities for any nurses or STNA’s who may be interested in working for themselves by becoming an Independent Provider of home and community based services.

Pharmacy TechnicianPharmacy technicians work under the supervision of the pharmacist and have duties that include filling prescriptions, counting pills, measuring medications and labeling products. Pharmacy technicians also verify prescriptions and maintain patient records and insurance information and are employed in retail pharmacies, hospitals and extended care facilities.

Independent Provider Program Purpose: To provide an overview of the conditions, requirements and opportunities for any nurses or STNA’s who may be interested in working for themselves by becoming an Independent Provider of home and community based services. This is a 2 hour session designed to inform you about the Independent Provider Course, which will be offered in September and October as a workshop.Independent Provider Description Independent provider nurses and nursing assistants provide care to acute and chronically ill medically fragile children and adults who are enrolled in the Ohio Home Care Waiver Program. With over 6,000 Independent Providers throughout Ohio, it is easy to see how they can, and do, play an important role in the delivery of the Ohio Home Care Program. This seminar provides an overview of the qualifications and process for becoming an approved Independent Provider in Ohio and offers participants an opportunity to gain an understanding of the various regulatory, clinical and operational requirements for Ohio’s Independent Providers.

NANCY J. KNIGHT SCHOOL OF NURSING Approved by Ohio Department of Education and Ohio Board of Nursing, this 1440 clock hour program prepares graduates to pass the Board of Nursing NCLEX licensing exam and work as an LPN in a variety of health care settings. The Nancy J. Knight School of Nursing offers both a day 44-week program and an evening 88-week program at Ohio Hi-Point Career Center. A 44-week program is offered at our Urbana site. A 72-week dual enrollment PN to RN program with Clark State Community College is offered at our sites in Marysville.

Pre-requisite courses  in Anatomy & Physiology and Computer Applications are  required before the start of first quarter classes. There are different pre-requisite criteria for the dual enrollment. This criteria can be obtained from the program coordinator. Instruction includes concurrent  clinical  experience  at  area  health  facilities  for  Nursing  Principles,  Medical-Surgical Nursing, Maternal/Infant Health, Gerontology, Pediatric Nursing,  IV Therapy and Pharmacology.  Additional  coursework  includes  Nutrition, Microbiology, Mental  Health  & Illness and Growth and Development.

Enrollments Begin in April 2012, July 2012, October 2012, January 2013!

ENROLLMENT REQUIREMENTS:*Age 18 or older*Application with official high school transcript or GED on file*Pass WorkKeys testing with Level 4 or above. Work Keys testing includes applied math, reading for information and locating information. Admissions are competitive based on overall application score, which includes WorkKeys scores.*Submit four references (after testing is complete)*Have an official State and Federal Background check submitted directly to the program coordinator.

PUBLIC SAFETY SERVICESParamedic Certificate ProgramOhio Hi-Point has partnered with Clark State Community College to bring their Paramedic Certificate Program to the Bellefontaine campus. This program provides quality education in the “art and science” of advanced out-of-hospital emergency care. The curriculum provides for integration of knowledge and skills including pre-hospital environment, preparatory skills, trauma and burns, medical emergencies, OB/GYN emergencies, behavioral emergencies and crisis intervention. Upon successful completion, the student will meet and exceed the objectives of the National Standard Paramedic Training curriculum, providing eligibility for the National registry certification exam. Travel will be required for certain course work and clinicals. Medical Terminology and Fundamentals of Anatomy & Physiology are pre-requisite courses.Certifications that can be earned:

Admissions & Financial Aid InformationOur Student Services office is here to assist those who are considering enrollment in one of our programs. The office will work closely with you during the enrollment process to understand your career and college options, admission requirements and financial aid possibilities.

Class EnrollmentEach program and class has a minimum and maximum number of participants permitted. classes will be cancelled and registration fees returned in full if the minimum number of tuition-paying students is not reached.

FeesSome programs have fees associated with enrollment. All fees are noted in this catalog next to each class or program information. You should check with Student Services or program instructors for a complete listing of fees.

FINANCIAL AID

Specific pointsThe purpose of financial aid is to supplement your and your family’s contributions toward your cost of education. Financial aid is offered to all eligible full-time adult students. Ohio Hi-Point Career Center’s primary financial aid options include:Federal Pell Grant – Gift aid awarded on need-based eligibility criteria.Federal Direct Loans – Federal Stafford Loans. Federal dollars borrowed directly from the government through the school. This loan represents debts that must be repaid.Look for the symbol for our Federal Pell Grant and Federal Direct Loan eligible programs.Other aid – Local agency funding such as offered through the WIA (Job and Family Services) offices, Veterans Assistance and Trade Adjustment Act. Apply at local offices.

EligibilityTo receive financial aid you must:  •  Be a U.S. citizen, or an eligible non-citizen  •  Be enrolled in a full-time program  •  Have a valid Social Security number  •  Make satisfactory academic progress  •  Register with the Selective Service, if applicable  •  Not be in default on any federal loans or grants

APPLICATION PROCEDURETo apply for Department of Education financial aid programs, complete the U.S. Department of  Education’s  Free  Application  for  Federal  Student  Aid  (FAFSA).  Application  can  be completed on the Web at http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/ or through the financial aid office. You and your parent (if applicable) should also get a Personal Identification Number (PIN) from the Deptartment of Education to electronically sign your FAFSA.

HEATING, VENTILATION, AIR CONDITIONING AND REFRIGERATION (HVAC-R) The Ohio Hi-Point Career Center HVAC-R program provides  quality  training  to  persons wishing to enter  the HVAC-R field. The HVAC-R program supplies students with  training  and  opportunities  necessary  to  gain  the  skills  required  for  an  entry  level  position  as  a HVAC-R  technician. The program also provides  students  the opportunity  to  receive  five industry certifications.

Thermal Systems play a key role  in  industry and commercial and residential applications –  including  refrigeration,  air  conditioning  and  heat  pumps.  Curriculum:  Thermal  System Power; Enthalpy; Temperature Measurement; Gas Laws; Thermal Science Concepts; Heat Transfer  Methods;  Thermodynamic  Cycles;  Refrigeration  System  Operation;  Refrigerant Types;  Heat  Pump  System  Operation;  Thermal  Efficiency;  Refrigeration  Components; Phase Diagrams and Property Tables

Environmental Applications will enable students to learn the environmental effects such as sun or humidity,  insulation, lighting and ceiling fans on living structures. Curriculum: Heat Load;  Insulation; R Values;  Thermodynamic Efficiency; Heat  Loss; Humidity: Dew Point; Psychrometrics; Air Conditioning; Thermal System Design and Human Comfort Factors.

The HVAC-R program is North Central Association of Colleges and Schools (NCA) accredited and ISO-9000 certified. The program is a full  time 900 hour, one-year program with day time or evening classes available and offers the following certifications: EPA 608, 609 and 410a, NATE (North American Technician Excellence) and ICE (Industry Competency Exam). 

The HVAC-R program provides students with 24 hours of credit transfer through the State of Ohio’s Career Technical Credit Transfer (Ct2) program.

Foundational Courses

IST 3140 Industrial Safety and Health (20 Hours)An introduction to industrial safety practices, lockout/tag out procedures, terminology, safety regulations and requirements. Classroom based training.

IST 3115 Industrial Mathematics (30 Hours)Application of mathematical concepts to the manufacturing and maintenance of products and processes. Self-paced lab activity.

IST 3080 Basic Computer Applications (30 Hours)Fundamental concepts of the PC, operating systems and networks. Hands on training in the use of word processing, spreadsheet and database programs to prepare reports and make presentations. Instructor lead course.

IST 3320 Total Productive Maintenance Practices (15 Hours)Introduces TPM topics including the difference between planned and un-planned maintenance, 5S philosophy, five different types of maintenance practices, Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE) calculations and the Pillars of TPM. Instructor lead course.

IST 3110 Business English (30 Hours)Review of basic writing skills and grammar with an emphasis on technical writing skills. Microsoft Word is used to develop the tools and formats for reports, memos and other technical writing. Lab based utilizing a workbook and PC with instructor interaction.

Electrical Courses

IST 3150 Basic Electrical AC and DC Circuits (40 Hours)Introduction to alternating and direct current circuits utilizing Amatrol laboratory equipment along with multimedia computer based training. Multiple hands on laboratory exercises are included, which focus on the 

construction of electrical circuits. Circuits  are tested using electrical test equipment. Topics include Ohm’s Law, series and  parallel circuits, resistors, capacitors, inductors, relays, transformers and other electrical components.

IST 3225 Introduction to Electronics (20 Hours)Introduction to the function and operation of basic electronic components. Topics include resistor values, bread board and construction of electronic circuits, function and troubleshooting of electronic components including diodes, SCR’s, TRIAC’s, transistors, potentiometers, capacitors, resistors and bridge rectifiers. Utilizes ANGEL online learning suite.

IST 3151 Motor Controls 1 (40 Hours)This course focuses on relay control of electric motor and pneumatic systems and their industrial applications. Students use a variety of industrial relay control circuits, schematics, ladder diagrams and Boolean logic to learn industry-relevant skills in installation, operation and performance analysis of motor controls systems. 

IST 3152 Motor Controls 2 (40 Hours)This course gives the student a real world experience of troubleshooting and repair of motor control systems using a multi-meter in a three phase motor control system. The student learns to diagnose and repair problems in wiring, relays, transformers, switches, power supplies, variable speed drives and motors. 

IST 3470 Basic Process Quality Control (30 Hours)Introduction to process control systems, instrument tags, piping and instrumentation diagrams, loop controllers, final control elements, liquid level control, methods of automatic control, flow measurement and control, level measurement and control loop performance. Emphasis on electronic instrumentation set-up and use.

Program DescriptionThe Integrated Systems Technology (IST) industrial training program provides students with the critical skills required by systems technicians in modern industry.

The IST program is North Central Association of Colleges and Schools (NCA) accredited and ISO-9000 certified. The program is offered as a full time 900 hour one year program, as well as a part time, two year 900 hour program.

IST 3125 Introduction to Hydraulics (30 Hours)Introduction to hydraulic schematics, filters, regulators, relief valves, motors, pumps and control of hydraulic components. Utilizes Amatrol laboratory equipment along with multimedia computer based training. Includes many hands on laboratory exercises.

IST 3120 Introduction to Pneumatics (30 Hours)Introduction to the fundamentals of fluid power. Utilizes Amatrol laboratory equipment along with multimedia computer based training. Topics include pneumatic schematics, filters, lubricators, regulators, valves, cylinders, gauges, check valves and flow control valves. Includes multiple hands on laboratory exercises.

IST 3142 Mechanical Systems and Principles 2 (40 Hours)Advanced mechanical course in heavy duty belt drive systems, synchronous belt systems, lubrication concepts, precision shaft alignment, precision coupling systems and heavy duty chain drive systems. Extensive 

laboratory exposure to mechanical drives, motors, tools and measuring instruments.

IST 3143 Mechanical Systems and Principles 3 (40 Hours)Advanced mechanical course in bearing types and applications, gaskets and seals, advanced gear drives, brakes and clutches, linear drives and ball screw drives. Extensive laboratory exposure to mechanical drives, motors, tools and measuring instruments.

IST 3271 Introduction to Noise, Vibration and Harshness Principles (30 Hours)Advanced course in the use of vibration analysis to determine where and how to perform maintenance on a machine. Demonstrates how vibration analysis is  used to increase machine reliability and reduce downtime as part of a Total Productive Maintenance (TPM) program. Extensive laboratory exposure to vibration analysis equipment. 

Programmable Logic Controllers Courses

IST 3250 Programmable Logic Controllers 1 (50 Hours)Utilizes Allen-Bradley SLC500 Programmable Controller and Amatrol simulation equipment along with multimedia computer based training. Topics include PLC programming, motor control, I/O interfacing, event sequencing and application development. Laboratory exercises provide many opportunities for the student to design and test PLC programs using timers, counters and various I/O devices. Also available with the Allen Bradley Control Logix 5500/RSLogix 5000 PLC.

IST 3251 Programmable Logic Controllers 2 (30 Hours)Advanced course in networking PLCs and troubleshooting PLC problems with the Allen Bradley Control Logix 5500/RSLogix 5000 PLC. 

IST 3252 Applied Automation Principles (40 Hours)Advanced industrial controls course that utilizes an automated production system that incorporates networked Allen-Bradley MicroLogix 1500 PLCs, Device Net, a vision system, Mitsubishi robot, material handling conveyor and other electromechanical devices. This course is designed to enhance the troubleshooting skills of technicians who have mastered the basics of industrial controls.

IST 3325 Introduction to Computer Aided Design (55 Hours)Introduction to the basics of Orthographic drawings and the basics in using CAD tools. Fundamentals include drawing tools, dimensioning, text insertion, CAD design and drawing modifications. Lab based utilizing a workbook and PC with instructor interaction.

*11IST3335 SolidWorks (8 Hours, online)In this online course, students learn basic and advanced SolidWorks applications including 2D and 3D modeling creation and features, production drawings and exploded views.

*11IST3336 Advanced SolidWorks (6 Hours, online)This online course covers advanced mates and exploded views, an introduction to animation, solid modeling creation and features.

Machining and Welding Maintenance Courses

IST 3101 Metrology (20 Hours)Introduction to the use of precision measurement tools including calipers, micrometers, scales and dial indicators.

IST 3410 Mechanical Blueprint Reading (30 Hours)Introduction to the fundamentals of blueprint reading, symbols, orthographic projection, linear and angular dimensioning, coordinate tolerancing systems, sectional views, welding symbols and interpretation of drawing specifications.

IST 3420 Introduction to Machining (40 Hours)Introduction to the basics of machining. Includes machine safety, proper care of equipment, manual lathes, milling machines and surface grinders. Two precision parts are machined using a blueprint. Finished parts must fit together and meet tolerance requirements. Instructor lead lab activity.

IST 3460 Introduction to Welding (40 Hours)Introduction to the basics of Oxyacetylene Welding and Cutting (OAW, OAC), Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW), Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW or MIG), Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW or TIG) and Flux Cored Arc Welding (FCAW). Course contents include safety, common welding techniques on different weld joints, surface preparation and grinding, metal identification and filler compatibility. Practices include material thicknesses from 16 ga. thru ½ inch on steel and aluminum in a variety of positions. Can also be customized for an in-depth training in one or two areas.

Students learn the basics of CNC mill and lathe machining operations.

All of these courses are available on an individual basis to give you the latest training in your desired field or as part of a 900 hour certificate program. Courses are offered at Ohio Hi-Point Career Center and at our satellite site in Urbana.Concurrent enrollment through Clark State Community College provides Integrated Systems Technology students with 23 hours of college credit upon completing a 900 hour certificate program. Students also earn Manufacturing Skills Standards Council (MSSC) certification.

RENEWABLE ENERGY TECHNOLOGY The  Ohio  Hi-Point  Career  Center  Renewable  Energy  Technology  (RET)  program  offers practical  training  of  knowledge  and  skills  necessary  to  work  in  the  renewable  energy industry. Students  in  this program experience hands-on  training  in a self-paced  learning environment. Facilitator guided self-directed learning provides students opportunities to learn at a desirable pace that meets individual and diverse learning needs. This comprehensive program meets  the  demands  of  a  growing  career  field  in  the  area  of  solar  technology. Classes are held at Ohio Hi-Point’s South Campus location in Urbana, OH.

About The ProgramThe RET program  trains  competent  solar  and  electrical  technicians  and prepares  them to fill an ever-increasing need for highly skilled and knowledgeable employees. Solar and electrical  technicians enjoy  job security not  found  in many careers  today along with  the freedom to relocate in most areas of the country due to the high demand of these skills. The RET program is North Central Association of Colleges and Schools (NCA) accredited. Students have several certification opportunities available during the 900-hour program.

Renewable Energy Technology CoursesEach  course  is  available  through  the  program  and  several  courses  are  available  on  an individual basis to provide the latest training in your desired field. Courses include:

OSHA, NEC, and NESC Safety (Electrical and Construction)Students learn about regulations and how they apply to the work in this industry. This course is designed to keep you and your co-workers in a safe working environment.

Electronics and the Digital Multi-meterThe student will be able to understand and demonstrate the proper use of electronics in the 

industry. This will include resistors, transistors, SCR’s and TRIAC’s and circuit application. 

Basic WiringStudents use NEC (National Electric Code) standards for proper sizing and wire application.

Solar Photovoltaic Learning SystemHow to size, design, properly install and service PV systems.

LEED and NABCEP CertificationsStudents are provided with learning and testing opportunities to obtain these industry accepted certifications. 

Basic Piping and Centrifugal Pump Learning SystemsStudents learn about the transfer of thermal energy through a fluid. This course includes design, layout, installation and servicing techniques.

Electrical Power DistributionStudents examine principles and operation of distribution systems and trace power distribution from the point of origin to the appliance in a safe environment.

PneumaticsIntroduction to the fundamentals of fluid power. Topics include pneumatic schematics, filters, lubricators, regulators, valves, cylinders, gauges, check valves and flow control valves. Includes multiple hands on laboratory exercises that illustrate how to effectively use compressed air to do work through electrical, electronic and air driven controls.

Mechanical HVAC FundamentalsStudents apply the fundamentals of thermal transfer using a refrigerant. This will cover basic refrigeration circuits and the controls that make them work.

Geothermal Heat Pump Training and CertificationStudents learn about the dynamics of using geothermal to store and transfer thermal content from one heat source to another. Course includes industry recognized certification.
