INTRODUCTION TO SELF DEFENSE AND THE ROLE OF CCW!
“THE BIG PICTURE”
OHIO SHOOTING SPORTS HANDGUN 1 COURSE
COURSE GOALTo Build A Solid Foundation Of Fundamental Concepts & Essential Techniques Necessary To Begin Building An Awareness of:
1) The Essential Elements of Self Defense Training 2) The Necessity to Develop a Combative Mindset3) Foundation of Safe, Efficient, Consistent Handgun Skills4) Overview Of Legal And Social Implications Of Concealed Carry
Most self defense programs focus on the fight itself or how to counter violence with
a variety of tools and skill sets.
You also need to incorporate other essential elements or your training will be incomplete. 9

PRECLUSIONNo Other option – Your last resort
15
OHIO REQUIREMENTS FOR SELF DEFENSE AND USE OF FORCE
USE OF DEADLY FORCE CAN BE APPLIED IF 3 CONDITIONS ARE PRESENT
1. Defendant is not at fault. Engaged in lawful activity.
2. Reasonable and honest belief of serious bodily danger.
3. Duty to retreat. Must show that they did not have a duty to retreat or avoid the danger.
16
USE OF FORCEThere Can Be Legal Issues That Arise
Out Of the Use Of Force.

RECOGNIZING & COMBATING ANTISOCIAL AND ASOCIAL
VIOLENCE & RECOGNIZING THE DIFFERENCE
VIOLENCE DYNAMICS
VIOLENCE DYNAMICS• SOCIAL VIOLENCE = Posturing and threatening
behavior not intended to kill or maim. Acts include ritualized jockeying for territory or status.
• ASOCIAL VIOLENCE = Actions that are intended to create serious bodily harm or death. Acts that do not target the victim as person but as a resource.
20
VIOLENCE DYNAMICS ATTACKERS MINDSET
• • Predators are looking for easy targets. Not a fight!
21
• The attacker will see you as a victim and will show you no mercy.
• Predators often travel in groups.
• Predators seek the weak that are isolated from the herd.
• Often when attacked the herd will not help. They will flee.
• Predators choose situations that are advantageous to them not to you.
Behavior of Human Predators & Animal Predators Are very Similar!
• Appearances…Do you look weak? Are you a favorable/easy target?
• Most acts of violence are not random! Odds are that you know your attacker.
VIOLENCE DYNAMICS
Behavior That Could Diffuse An Antisocial Situation Could In Fact
Encourage A Predator Who Is Intent On Asocial Behavior.

VIOLENCE DYNAMICSATTACK PHASES
• Target List• Surveillance• Target Selection• Planning• Probing / Rehearsal• Attack Team Deploys• Attack 23
PRE-INCIDENT INDICATORS• Excessive Grooming• Open & Closing Hands or Rubbing Hands• Shifting weight & change in stance• Looking around• Impeding your movement• Verbal exchange with strangers• Bump, push or shove• Target glancing• Obvious attempt to bait you• Blade body & shoulder drop• Lips tighten over teeth 24

HOW TO BECOME A MORE DIFFICULT TARGET
• Situational Awareness• Know Escape Routes• Understand Cover & Concealment• Mentally & Physically Prepared Ahead of time.• Prepared to Act Immediately• Better to Resist or Flee than go to Secondary Crime Scene• Avoid Venues Known for Trouble• Make “NO” Mean “NO”!• If you choose to resist. Resist 100%
INDICATORS OF MANIPULATION
• Team Building / Forced Teaming• Unsolicited Promise• Charm & Niceness• Too Many Details• Type Casting• Loan Sharking• Discounting the word “NO”
MINIMIZING ENCOUNTERS OUTSIDE THE HOME
• Scan & Assess / Situational Awareness• Be Wary Of Strangers – Courteous to
everyone Friendly to NO one!• Maintain Distance from Unknown Persons• Commanding Presence• Use you “Bad Dog” Voice to Set Limits

• MINDSET
• SKILLS• TACTICS
• EQUIPMENT41
COUNTER RESPONSE• To effectively defend oneself you must convince
your opponent that the encounter is over either through a threat of bodily injury or actual bodily injury.
• Often we must break something inside their body to stop them from continuing their mission.

TYPES OF SEMI-AUTOMATIC PISTOL ACTIONS
SINGLE-ACTION EACH PULL OF THE TRIGGER PERFORMS A SINGLE ACTION: RELEASING THE HAMMER. THE HAMMER MUST BE MANUALLY COCKED FOR THE FIRST SHOT.
TRADITIONAL DOUBLE-ACTION THE INITIAL LONG, HEAVY TRIGGER PULL BOTH COCKS AND RELEASES THE HAMMER. EACH SUBSEQUENT SHOT IS FIRED IN THE SINGLE-ACTION MODE.
DOUBLE-ACTION-ONLY EACH PULL OF THE TRIGGER BOTH COCKS AND RELEASES THE HAMMER, AS WITH A DOUBLE-ACTION REVOLVER.
OHIO SHOOTING SPORTS HANDGUN 1 COURSE
CAUSES OF FIREARM ACCIDENTS
IGNORANCE (LACK OF KNOWLEDGE)• IGNORANCE OF RULES FOR SAFE GUN HANDLING• IGNORANCE OF THE PROPER AND SAFE WAY TO OPERATE A PISTOL
CARELESSNESS (POOR OR IMPROPER
ATTITUDE)• FAILURE TO APPLY THE RULES FOR SAFE GUN HANDLING• FAILURE TO OBSERVE PROPER PROCEDURES FOR SAFELY OPERATING A PISTOL
OHIO SHOOTING SPORTS HANDGUN 1 COURSE
4 RULES FOR SAFE GUN HANDLING
•ALWAYS TREAT GUNS AS IF THEY ARE LOADED •ALWAYS NEVER POINT A GUN AT ANYTHING YOU DO NOT WISH TO DESTROY
•ALWAYS BE SURE OF YOUR TARGET AND WHAT IS BEYOND
•ALWAYS KEEP YOUR FINGER OFF THE TRIGGER UNTIL YOU ARE ON TARGET AND READY TO SHOOT

PROPER CARTRIDGE IDENTIFICATION IS NECESSARY TO ENSURE THE CORRECT AMMUNITION IS LOADED INTO THE PISTOL.
OHIO SHOOTING SPORTS HANDGUN 1 COURSE
CARTRIDGE DESIGNATION AND IDENTIFICATION
THE CARTRIDGE DESIGNATION IS:• MARKED ON THE PISTOL
•STAMPED ON THE HEAD OF THE CARTRIDGE CASE (HEADSTAMP)
• PRINTED ON THE FACTORY AMMUNITION BOX
SOME CARTRIDGES HAVE MORE THAN ONE DESIGNATION, SUCH AS 9 MM PARA/9 MM LUGER/ 9X19 MM, AND 45 AUTO/45 ACP.
• AMMUNITION SHOULD BE STORED IN A COOL, DRY PLACE
• STORE AMMUNITION IN A LOCATION WHERE CHILDREN OR OTHER UNAUTHORIZED PERSONS CANNOT ACCESS IT
• DO NOT EXPOSE AMMUNITION TO WATER, SOLVENTS, PETROLEUM PRODUCTS OR OTHER MATERIALS THAT CAN CAUSE CARTRIDGE DETERIORATION AND MALFUNCTIONS
• WIPE FINGERPRINTS OFF CARTRIDGES TO AVOID CORROSION DUE TO SALTY RESIDUE
• ALWAYS KEEP THE AMMUNITION IN THE ORIGINAL FACTORY BOX OR CARTON
DO NOT CUP EJECTION PORT OF FIREARM WHEN REMOVING A CARTRIDGE FROM THE CHAMBER OF A FIREARM.

POSITIONA POSITION IS THE PLATFORM FROM WHICH ALL THE SHOOTING FUNDAMENTALS ARE EXECUTED.
A POSITION SHOULD BE:• COMFORTABLE• BALANCED & STRONG• RELAXED or COMPRESSED DEPENDING ON SITUATION• PROPERLY ALIGNED WITH THE TARGET
• SIT BEHIND THE BENCH, FACING THE TARGET• FEET ARE FLAT ON THE GROUND• BOTH ARMS ARE EXTENDED FULLY FORWARD• BACK SHOULD BE STRAIGHT OR LEANING SLIGHTLY FORWARD• WRISTS ARE SUPPORTED BY SANDBAGS• HEAD IS FULLY ERECT
OHIO SHOOTING SPORTS HANDGUN 1 COURSE
ELEMENTS OF THE BENCHREST POSITION
• PISTOL EXTENDED WITH PROPER GRIP
• FEET SHOULDER WIDTH APART
• WEIGHT EVENLY DISTRIBUTED W/ WEIGHT ON BALLS OF FEET
• LEGS BENT AT KNEES
•LEANING SLIGHTLY FORWARD AT WAIST.
• HEAD ERECT OR SLIGHTLY FORWARD
• ARMS FULLY EXTENDED
• PISTOL BROUGHT TO EYE LEVEL
• SHOOTER IS RELAXED AND COMFORTABLE

ARC OF MOVEMENT OR ALSO CALLED DEVIATION REFERS TO THE UNAVOIDABLE MOTION OF A PISTOL HELD IN A SHOOTING POSITION.
OHIO SHOOTING SPORTS HANDGUN 1 COURSE
DEVIATION / ARC OF MOVEMENT
PRACTICE DECREASES THE DEVIATION / ARC OF MOVEMENT.
DEVIATION INCREASES AND DECREASES RELATIVE TO THE DISTANCE TO THE TARGET

• Grip• Stance• Aiming• Breath Control• Trigger Control• Follow Through
AIMING FUNDAMENTALS
USE SEATED POSITION DURING AIMING, BREATH, TRIGGER &
FOLLOW THROUGH DEMONTRATION
AIMING IS THE PROCESS OF ACHIEVING THE PROPER RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE TARGET, THE FRONT SIGHT AND THE REAR SIGHT.
AIMING CONSISTS OF TWO COMPONENTS:• SIGHT ALIGNMENT• SIGHT PICTURE
OHIO SHOOTING SPORTS HANDGUN 1 COURSE
AIMING
SIGHT ALIGNMENT REFERS TO THE PROPER RELATIONSHIP OF THE PISTOL’S FRONT AND
REAR SIGHTS.
WITH POST-AND-NOTCH SIGHTS:• THE TOPS OF THE FRONT AND REAR SIGHTS ARE EVEN • THE FRONT POST IS CENTERED IN THE REAR NOTCH
OHIO SHOOTING SPORTS HANDGUN 1 COURSE
SIGHT ALIGNMENT
PROPER SIGHT PICTURE IS OBTAINED WHEN THE ALIGNED SIGHTS ARE PUT INTO THEIR PROPER RELATIONSHIP WITH THE TARGET.

OHIO SHOOTING SPORTS HANDGUN 1 COURSE
ERRORS IN SIGHT ALIGNMENT AND SIGHT PICTURE
SIGHT ALIGNMENT IS MORE CRITICAL THAN SIGHT PICTURE.
A B C
A SIGHT PICTURE ERROR (A) YIELDS A SLIGHTLY OFF-CENTER GROUP. A SIGHT ALIGNMENT ERROR (C), PRODUCES A MUCH LARGER DEVIATION OF THE GROUP FROM THE TARGET. PROPER SIGHT ALIGNMENT AND SIGHT PICTURE IS PICTURED IN (B).
OHIO SHOOTING SPORTS HANDGUN 1 COURSE
FRONT SIGHT FOCUSWHEN SHOOTING A PISTOL WITH IRON SIGHTS, VISUAL FOCUS SHOULD BE ON THE FRONT SIGHT. THIS WILL LEAVE THE TARGET AND REAR SIGHT SLIGHTLY FUZZY, AS SHOWN AT LEFT, BUT CLEAR ENOUGH TO ESTABLISH PROPER SIGHT ALIGNMENT AND SIGHT PICTURE.
VISUALLY CHECK SIGHT ALIGNMENT
• Align sights – Instructor will verify sight alignment with a reverse cross check.
• VERIFY THAT ACTION IS OPEN & CHAMBER IS EMPTY!!!
• Drill also assists student to get over fear of pointing gun at another person.
OHIO SHOOTING SPORTS HANDGUN 1 COURSE
FUNDAMENTALS OF PISTOL MARKSMANSHIP
• Grip• Stance• Aiming• Breath Control• Trigger Control• Follow Through
BREATH CONTROL MINIMIZES THE BODY MOVEMENT PRODUCED BY BREATHING, WHICH CAN IMPAIR GOOD
SHOOTING.
• TAKE A BREATH BEFORE EACH SHOT, LET OUT ENOUGH AIR TO BE COMFORTABLE, AND THEN
SIMPLY STOP BREATHING WHILE FIRING THE SHOT
• AVOID HOLDING THE BREATH TOO LONG—THIS CAN CAUSE TREMORS
OHIO SHOOTING SPORTS HANDGUN 1 COURSE
*BREATH CONTROL* BENCHREST & DISTANCE SHOOTING

FUNDAMENTALS OF PISTOL MARKSMANSHIP
• Grip• Stance• Aiming• Breath Control• Trigger Control• Follow Through
TRIGGER CONTROL IS THE PROPER METHOD OF ACTIVATING THE TRIGGER TO MINIMIZE MOVEMENT THAT CAN MISALIGN THE SIGHTS.
•TRIGGER IS BETWEEN FINGERTIP AND FIRST JOINT OF INDEX FINGER. SPACE BETWEEN FINGER AND FRAME OF GUN
•TRIGGER IS SQUEEZED STRAIGHT REARWARD IN A SMOOTH, CONTINUOUS MOVEMENT
•THE TRIGGER SQUEEZE SHOULD PRODUCE A “SURPRISE BREAK”
•TRIGGER SQUEEZE AND SIGHT ALIGNMENT ARE DONE WHILE MAINTAINING MINIMUM DEVIATION / ARC OF MOVEMENT
•360 DEGREE HOLD ON GUN AS HIGH AS POSSIBLE.
•Extend – Touch - Press
OHIO SHOOTING SPORTS HANDGUN 1 COURSE
TRIGGER CONTROL
AT THE MOMENT THE SHOT BREAKS YOUR MIND WILL SEE A FREEZE FRAME OF WHERE THE SIGHTS WHERE AT ON THE TARGET. YOU SHOULD BE ABLE TO CALL YOUR SHOTS WITHOUT LOOKING AT THE TARGET.FOLLOW-THROUGH IS THE CONTINUATION OF THE APPLICATION OF THE FUNDAMENTALS OF SHOOTING THROUGH AND IMMEDIATELY AFTER THE FIRING OF THE SHOT.
FOLLOW-THROUGH ENABLES THE SHOOTER TO INTEGRATE, MAINTAIN AND CONTINUE THE SHOOTING FUNDAMENTALS BEFORE, DURING AND AFTER THE SHOT.
CALLING YOUR SHOT & FOLLOW-THROUGH
1. FIND YOUR TARGET & SEE IT CLEARLY2. SIGHT ALIGNMENT
3. SIGHT PICTURE4. TRIGGER CONTROL / TRIGGER PRESS
5. CALLING YOUR SHOT & FOLLOW-THROUGH
THESE 5 ESSENTIAL STEPS SHOULD BE PERFORMED WITH EVERY SHOT OR YOU WON’T HIT WHAT YOUR AIMING AT.

LEGAL IMPLICATIONS & SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITIES
Quoted from Richard Cordray, Ohio Attorney General, publication “Ohio’s Concealed Carry Law”
“Self Defense: Depending on the specific fact of the situation, an accused person may claim that the use of deadly force was justified to excuse his or her action, which would otherwise be a crime. Self defense or the defense of another is an affirmative defense that an accused may assert against a criminal charge for an assault or homicide offense.”
“The term “affirmative defense” means the accused, not the prosecutor must prove by preponderance of the evidence that he acted in self defense or in the defense of another. In other words, the defendant must proved that it is more probably than not that his use of deadly force was necessary due to the circumstances.”
“Whether this affirmative defense applies to the situation or whether it will likely succeed against criminal charges depends heavily on the specific facts and circumstances of each situation. The Ohio Supreme Count has explained that a defendant must prove three conditions to establish that he acted in defense of himself or another.”

OHIO’S CONCEALED CARRY LAW
• Castle Doctrine •
• Enacted in 2008
•
• A person does not have the duty to retreat from a residence or vehicle that they lawfully occupy or a residence or vehicle owned by an immediate family member before using force in self-defense or defense of another.
•
• Presumption of self-defense is a rebuttable presumption. Prosecutor not the defendant carries the burden of producing evidence contrary to the fact that the law presumes.
•
• A person is barred from recovering money (suing) if their injury arises from their criminal behavior, including injuries sustained by acts of the intended victim. If you injure an innocent bystander (hit by a stray bullet) you may be ordered to pay damages to that person.

Safeguard for Minors• Children under the age of 18 have a much higher risk of identity
theft than is commonly realized. Thieves target them because the child’s information may be used for years without discovery … until the minor is old enough to establish credit.
• Education, early detection, and expert consultation make for a powerful package of tools to minimize this risk.
• Up to four minor children can be enrolled for monitoring to detect existing credit files and it will cost the member only $1 more per month per family.
• All dependent children up to 18 are covered for consultation and restoration.
