Ohio Association for Developmental Education

October 21, 2010 Hello! My name is Lana Evans, and I am the President of the Ohio Association for Developmental Education (OADE). On behalf of the OADE Board, I’m pleased to welcome you to the fall 2010 Conference. The theme for this year’s conference is Discovering Innovation and Effective Teaching, and we hope you’ll find the information provided at the conference interesting, inspiring, and useful. For just a moment, I’d like to focus your attention on one key word in that theme – innovation. As you know, the term innovation refers to something “new” and developmental educators in Ohio and across the country are being encouraged to create new and different ways of educating and serving students in the effort to reach and teach greater numbers of people. Developmental education is the center of attention through several major initiatives including the Developmental Education Initiative, Achieving the Dream, and Changing the Equation to name just a few. The overarching purpose of these initiatives is to increase the number of students who successfully complete developmental education courses by identifying innovative and effective teaching methods and practices. The 2010 Conference is a perfect opportunity to learn more about (a) innovative practices in developmental education in Ohio direct from faculty and administrators, (b) the future of developmental education in Ohio according to our Thursday keynote speaker from the Ohio Board of Regents (OBR) – Dr. William Russell, Associate Vice Chancellor, Adult Education and Institutional Collaboration, and (c) how current OADE Board members are focusing on what you want from OADE as identified in the recent OADE Climate Survey. University System of Ohio institutions are called to enroll 230,000 more Ohioans over the course of the next several years in the Strategic Plan for Higher Education (2008-2017) and developmental educators are absolutely essential to our collective effort to reach this goal. Individual institutions are also called to increase the number of students who complete degrees and again – developmental educators are essential to institutions’ efforts to reach this goal. Ohio ranked 37th in the nation in the number of Ohio residents who are between the ages of 25 to 64 who had obtained bachelor’s degrees in 2006. The good news is that we moved up two spots to rank 35th in the nation in 2008. The bad news is that we have a long way to go and time is of the essence. We are called to consider new and bold ways to enhance students’ learning in developmental education that help our students achieve their educational goals which, in essence, are our goals. Please enjoy the conference and take the time to get to know each other, your OADE Board members, and the OBR representatives in attendance. If you have any immediate needs that can make your experience at the OADE fall conference more enjoyable and productive please let me know and I’ll be happy to try to meet your needs. Sincerely,

Lana Evans OADE President

Ohio Association for Developmental Education

I would like to welcome everyone to this year’s conference, Discovering Innovation and Effectiveness in Teaching! I look forward to being able to meet and collaborate with such outstanding individuals as we focus on the common goal of developmental student success. In the current climate of an ever-evolving student population, declining budgets and increasing accountability, we are often asked to do more with less. Most of the time, we are able to effectively adapt to these changes. At times, however, environmental factors may change so drastically that we find ourselves in a position where the status-quo no longer functions. It is at these times that innovation is necessary, both for the good of the student and the survival of the organization. I realize that it may be difficult to motivate individuals and departments to break out of the mold and try something new. All too often, when we are asked to change, we resist and proceed down the road to stagnation. But change is necessary. Our challenge is to effectively manage the change, and this can be a juggling act. However, when done properly and with care, the outcomes can be quite promising. I hope that this year’s conference will spark new ideas that can spur such change in our institutions. As we attend the sessions over the next few days, please keep in mind that there is no magic formula that will be successful in all cases. The challenge will be to find a method that meshes with individual teaching and learning styles and fits into the framework of institutional constraints. OADE has always been an organization that provides a forum for its members to share ideas about what works and what doesn’t in a collegial atmosphere. Thus, I hope you will take advantage of the many opportunities available to meet with old friends, make new connections, develop new ideas and learn about the many services that OADE provides. Dear Conference Participants:

On behalf of the Executive Board of the National Association for Developmental Education (NADE), I welcome you to the Blackwell Inn in Columbus, and I congratulate you on the Annual Conference of the Ohio Association for Developmental Education. “Discovering Innovation and Effectiveness in Teaching” is a very relevant theme. Your president, conference chairperson, and conference planning team have organized a wide variety of sessions for you to attend. You are very fortunate to have Dr. William Russell, Associate Vice Chancellor of Adult Education and Institutional Collaboration, as your Thursday keynote speaker. There are many benefits to your continued membership in OADE; some of the most valuable, of course, are the collegial networking and sharing of professional academic expertise among your members.

I hope you will also consider involvement at the national level. The 2011 NADE Conference will be held in Washington, D.C., on February 23-26 at the Marriott Wardman Park Hotel. The Board looks forwards to meeting with your chapter leaders during the Advisory Council Reception and the Leadership Congress, and with all of you at the conference, especially during the Town Hall Meeting, “NADE, Politics, and Hot Apple Pie.” Further information on the national conference and on all NADE activities and benefits can be found at http://www.nade.net.

Finally, I encourage you to contribute your professional and personal talents in active service and leadership to OADE, NADE, and our profession to help insure that Developmental Education in the United States meets the expectations of our leaders and provides vital academic and support services for our students.

Best wishes for a productive and inspirational conference.
