Ohio Angus Breeders, I hope everyone had a jealous New Year’s and is getting along well with spring calving if you have started already. It never fails, just as many start spring calving that some of the coldest & muddiest weather seems to rear its ugly head. I hope you were able to stay warm recently! Quick reminder, The Ohio Angus Annual Meeting & Banquet will be held on February 8th at The Fort Rapids Indoor Waterpark, Hotel & Conference Center, Columbus, OH. If you haven’t purchased your tickets yet, there is still time but I need to know your intentions ASAP! At the Annual Banquet, we will be holding our Annual Directory page auction, selling many the premier placement and full color pages. If you are interested in purchasing a premier page, but are unable to attend the banquet, please let me know. Finally, interest has been great from potential consignors to the Angus Super Star Sale at the Ohio Beef Expo. And it looks like we will once again have a tremendous sale offering. More information on the sale can be found on page 5 of this newsletter, while the catalog will be posted at www.ohioangus.org in mid to late February upon completion.
Thanks,
Dan Wells, Secretary / Fieldman

OCA Accepting Bull Consignments for Seedstock Improvement Sale - Deadline January 31
The Ohio Cattlemen’s Association is currently accepting bull consignments to the Seedstock Improvement Sale. The sale, held on Saturday, April 12 at noon at the Union Stock Yards Company in Hillsboro, Ohio, offers an affordable way to market bulls from multiple breeds in one location and on one day. Buyers have the assurance of buying bulls with known genetics, a completed vaccination regimen and a breeding soundness exam. The Seedstock Improvement Sale is open to consignments from all breeds of bulls. Consignors must be a current member of the Ohio Cattlemen’s Association to participate. Bulls are required to be registered and to have expected progeny differences (EPDs). The bulls will be placed in sale order based on a within breed evaluation star system using EPDs for birth weight, weaning weight, yearling weight, milk, marbling and ribeye. Bulls consigned to the sale can be from one to five years of age. History of the sale shows that bulls 18 months of age and older command a higher price. Consignors will be allowed to substitute bulls for entries made to the Seedstock Improvement Sale. All bulls are required to be tested for Bovine Viral Diarrhea (BVD) persistent infection (PI) status. For more information on the sale including all requirements, visit ohiocattle.org and look under the Beef Improvement section or contact the OCA office at 614-873-6736 or through email at [email protected]. Interested consignors or buyers can also contact John Grimes, sale manager and OSU Extension Beef Coordinator, with any questions at 937-763-6000 or [email protected]. Consignment deadline for the sale is January 31, 2014.

Buckeye Stock Report Ups and Downs to
Finish the 2013 Season Duane Shawk finished 8th overall at the American
Royal in Kansas City, Missouri, and led the Ohio State
University Livestock Judging Team (OSU LJT) to a
12th overall placing out of 31 teams. The OSU LJT
was second in swine judging at the Royal, just two
points out of first, and also ranked 9th in cattle.
Improving sheep judging became the primary objective
leading up to the national contest held at the North
American Livestock Exposition in Louisville, KY. The
team did improve considerably in that species;
finishing 9th in sheep reasons, however, miscues in the
other two species caused the team to slip to 16th overall.
The two biggest highlights from the competition were
Justin Bachman and Emily
Limes being recognized for
talking high sets of reasons on
market lambs and Angus heifers,
respectively.

Apply for the 2014 Beef Leaders InstituteSubmit applications by March 1, 2014, to be
considered for the program
American Angus Association® members interested in becoming more effective leaders in the agriculture industry are encouraged to apply for the seventh annual Beef Leaders Institute (BLI). Held June 23-26, 2014, the program brings Angus producers together in Saint Joseph, Mo., for a series of informative sessions, followed by a three-day tour across several industry segments. “BLI allows our members to experience first-hand the entire beef production chain, and better understand how their quality Angus cattle contribute to the industry as a whole,” says Robin Ruff, Association director of events, activities and education. Funded through the Angus Foundation, BLI is designed for Association members 25-45 years old to provide insight into the beef industry, while enhancing their knowledge of the Association and strengthening leadership skills. “This opportunity really helped me recalibrate my focus on the beef industry, and look at it from a more holistic manner,” said Rhonda Wulf, a 2013 BLI participant from Morris, Minn. “I would encourage others to apply, just for that chance to see the industry on a broader level, to get out of their comfort zone, broaden their mind, and to go back to work with a new energy.” During the three-day event, BLI participants are able to tour a beef harvesting and packing facility, retailer, fabricator, feedlots and other industry segments, including the Association. The Association provides transportation, lodging, meals and materials during BLI. Attendees will be responsible for round-trip transportation between their home and either Kansas City or Saint Joseph, Mo. To apply, click here or contact the American Angus Association at 816-383-5100. Information can also be found on www.ANGUS.org. Applications for the 2014 program are due March 1, 2014.
Express Ranches Donates the 2014 Angus Foundation Heifer
EXAR Royal Lass 2068 sells Jan. 15 during Angus events at the National Western Stock Show.
Express Ranches of Yukon, Okla., has donated the 2014 Angus Foundation Heifer Package to benefit Angus youth, education and research through an auction held at 3:30 p.m. on Jan. 15, 2014, in the Beef Palace Auction Area at the National Western Stock Show in Denver, Colo. The chosen female is EXAR Royal Lass 2068 (AAA Registration No. 17160657), born Jan. 8, 2012, and sired by EXAR Upshot 0562B. Royally bred, 2068 is the maternal granddaughter of the now deceased record-setting $263,000 in 2009 calving ease sire EXAR 263C and
the dam of BR Midland, BR Royal Lass 7036-19. EXAR Royal Lass 2068 is bred to Sitz Top Game 561X and is due to calve Feb. 13, 2014. Express Ranches is America’s largest seedstock operation, selling more than 4,800 head of registered cattle per year. Express Ranches Owner Bob Funk believes in the cattle industry and is an advocate for America’s youth. Funk has supported the Angus Foundation in many ways in the past, including hosting “That Old West Magic” gala and auction for the Angus Foundation in Oklahoma City, Okla., in 2008, which raised more than $345,000 in gross proceeds. “We at Express Ranches feel it is a great honor and privilege to have the opportunity to support Angus youth through the donation of the 2014 Angus Foundation heifer,” Funk says. Angus Foundation President Milford Jenkins says, as with all Angus Foundation Heifer donors since the inception of the successful fundraising activity in 1980, the Foundation is thankful to Express Ranches as the 2014 donor. “It’s truly an honor for the Angus Foundation to receive this commitment of a very elite Angus bred-heifer gift from our wonderful friend and longtime supporter Bob Funk of Express Ranches,” says Milford Jenkins, Angus Foundation president. “Bob’s generous gifts over the years to our organization have enabled us to make a difference in the lives of our Angus youth and members through investments and support of scholarships, education and research.” 2014 Angus Foundation Heifer Package also includes 30 days insurance from American Live Stock Insurance Co., Geneva, Illinois; transportation to the buyer’s ranch from Lathrop Livestock Transportation, Dundee, Illinois; and an Advanced Reproductive Technology Package by ViaGen, the cloning division of Trans Ova Genetics of Sioux Center, Iowa. The sale of the Angus Foundation Heifer supports the Angus Foundation, the not-for-profit affiliate of the American Angus Association®, that funds and supports programs involving education, youth and research in the Angus breed and agricultural industry. Visit www.angusfoundation.org for more information about the 2014 Angus Foundation Heifer Package.
