It is hard to believe that I am celebrating my firstanniversary at OHCC. I have had a front row seat to somepretty incredible projects in the community. Even better,I have been accompanied by some talented and commit-ted people along the way from the Master BoardMembers, both past and present, Committee Volunteersand an incredibly capable and professional Staff. Uponmy arrival, I realized quickly how this Community andthe Master Board are goal oriented. I inherited from JoeWinkler, a project list to track the ongoing status and sim-ply added items the Board wanted to get to as time per-mitted. This has been an invaluable time managementtool to help the Master Board maintain focus on their pri-orities without losing sight of the important tasks theywant to get accomplished. Here is a list of some of thethings we have accomplished together over the last year.

Several new policies were reviewed, revised or createdto help manage the needs of the Residents which include:Video Surveillance, Donation, Procurement, TreeMaintenance, Sewer Lateral Line Maintenance, andDisciplinary Hearings process. The age survey got a 97%response this year and we eliminated the Do Not

Resuscitate policy which created liability for staff to tryto implement.

The Board reviewed a conceptual plan and cam-paigned vigorously to provide funding capability forfuture enhancements. While the CC&R amendment didnot pass, it was a valuable exercise in gaining insight fromthe members for future projects. This information willassist the Board in maintaining the high standards for theAssociation amenities. In addition to looking at thebuildings and infrastructure, the Board has been set anew standard for being wise stewards of our naturalresources. The strategy to aggressively conserve waterresources has proven to be the singular reason that theOceanside Water Dept. contacted OHCC to notify theBoard of the availability of grant funds from theMetropolitan Water District. While the Board enjoyedcelebrating the grand opening of the newly renovatedPark it was busy processing the next step to convert the181,150 square feet of turf along Cannon Road to droughttolerant planting as well. The funding at $1 per squarefoot made this next step possible and the funding planimplemented by the previous Boards assured theCommunity that there were adequate monies available topursue this project just as we received notice of an addi-tional 10% increase to water rates over the next twoyears!

Staff has assisted with the implementation of a transi-tion from paper files to digital record storage and we con-tinue to utilize technology to make the daily operationmore efficient. We now offer Escrows digitally instead ofburning reams of paper, requiring staff to copy and ofcourse the mailing cost is eliminated and they can be sentwith the click of a button. Major projects that Staff alsoassisted the Board with included a complete revamp ofthe Homeowner Handbook, with a full legal review tobring them current. The Committee Policy, Charters andoverall structure was revised to meet the ever changingneeds of the community and assist the Board with manag-ing oversight of the tremendous volunteer force that con-tributes their time so generously. An effective process forgetting recommendations to the Board has been very suc-cessfully implemented over the last year. Thanks toinsights and guidance from Staff that supports theCommittees, the following projects were accomplished:Owl Boxes were installed, new pool furniture arrived,Hoist fitness equipment was purchased in the gym and aFitness Trainer was hired, the Dog Park was renovatedand new benches ordered, the trees by the tennis courtswere replaced with something more appropriate for thespace, a new ball machine ordered, the Bocce pergolaswere replaced, refrigerated drinking fountains wereinstalled, wood floor refinishing is underway, Drill & Fillon the golf course was completed to improve water andchemical absorption, Abravenal Hall ceiling tiles werereplaced and repainted, a new contract was negotiatedfor bus service at a substantial savings and a new market-ing video was produced and posted to the website.

Thank you for making my first anniversary so memo-rable. I look forward to each new day here with gratitudefor the opportunity to serve alongside such remarkablepeople to achieve amazing results for the residents ofOHCC.

Landscape Committee Updatefor May 2012By Diana Wenman, Chair

April was a busy month with the LandscapeCommittee taking on the new responsibility of assessingthe complaint when a resident calls in with a CommonArea tree trimming or removal request. Most homeown-ers are aware that OHCC has a tree assessment policy. Our community is broken into three parts (3 rotations, orphases) and now that the re-landscaping plan has beenapproved and the planting moratorium lifted we are get-ting back into our normal rotation. Last yearrotations/phases one and three were assessed, mapped, and trees were trimmed or removed. We are about toembark on rotation/phase two and when that work isdone we will be back on track to tackle onerotation/phase each year. If a tree incident happensbecause of an unusually high wind storm, or some othercause, homeowners should call in a work order and thiswill be passed on to the appropriate person(s) to followthrough. Our homes are places of refuge, comfort andpeace, and the surrounding vegetation should be pleasur-able to look at and a joy to live with.

Since the Cannon Road Project is well on the way, theLC is moving forward with other priority areas that havebeen identified for re-landscaping to save water and up-date our aging plant material. We have sent a list ofnative, drought tolerant plants to Fish & Game, for theirperusal, and await their reply. We anticipate the Arcadiaouter slope that is adjacent to the Carlsbad EcologicalReserve will be addressed in late summer, and are work-ing to re-landscape the Front Entrance from Cannon toLVW, as well as the Back Gate entry islands, theHomeowner Office front area, possibly the turf areaacross from The Park, and distressed areas along LVW.

For those who may not have heard, the “drill & fill”procedure that took place on the golf course has been ahuge success, and we are using 50% of the water thatused to be needed! The course looks beautiful! Ourefforts are beginning to pay off and more of the same canonly improve our bottom line and our Community’s beau-ty! Onward and upward!

The Safety CornerBy Leonard Weinstein, Director of Community Patrol

Service (CPS)Hello residents of Ocean Hills Country Club.Last month, I wrote about having “read every page” in

the two and a half inch thick CVC. Well, one of our goodresidents, a CHP-retired officer who has been a goodsource of information for me in past, pointed out that Imay have missed a page or so. F.Y.I., the CVC has addi-tional information regarding vehicle license plates. Itgoes on to say that “when two plates are issued by thedepartment for a vehicle, they shall be attached to thevehicle for which they were issued, one in the front andthe other in the rear.” You may wonder why I’m going onabout this. How many times have you seen a vehicle onwhich the front plate was not installed; the manufacturerdidn’t allow for easy plate installation on the frontbumper, it doesn’t look good there, in the owner’s opinion, etc. This is a violation for which a “Fix-It” ticket or cita-tion may be issued. One must weigh the attractiveness ofone’s vehicle vs. the possibility of paying for not attachingthat front plate.

As a number of you are aware, having received alarminspection scheduling phone calls, your CommunityPatrol Service (CPS) has begun annual alarm systeminspections for 2012. These systems, HOA installed andmaintained, are for your safety and wellbeing. The annu-al inspections are to ensure that your system is function-ing properly. In as much as the actual inspection, by a CPSofficer, only requires some ten to fifteen minutes of yourtime, please allow us to assist you by completing theinspection. We are continuing to experience telephone-related alarm system malfunctions. As a reminder, shouldyou have any kind of telephone equipment repairs orupgrades, please contact your CPS so an officer canensure that the system is still functioning properly.

Let’s not let our guard down! Your continued coopera-tion in reporting anyone or anything that appears suspectis important. Safety in monitoring our community our-selves is paramount. Do you remember to lock your doorsand windows, pick up your mail and newspapers, as wellas make arrangements when you are away? YOU are yourown first line of defense!

“Our numbers, they are decreasing!” A little over ayear ago, (January, 2011) STOP Sign violations were up

almost 170% over the three previous months (October –December, 2010). As the months go by, your continuedawareness of vehicle safety as demonstrated by activityin OHCC is to be applauded. Adherence to safe drivingpractices is up while the number of violations continuesto decrease.

OHCC CERTCERT is a nation-wide program adopted by the City of

Oceanside in 2005 and has since become an importantpart of the City’s EEmmeerrggeennccyy PPllaann. In late 2009, OHCCmembers of CERT developed a program specificallyaimed at helping residents prepare for, survive, and recov-er from a disaster. Because OHCC CERT is not a club, theCan Do Club stepped up last year and helped us raise$4,800 in ticket sales and donations to purchase emer-gency equipment and supplies. So far, we have been ableto replace the loaned HAM radio (used to access theOceanside Emergency Operations Center and other agenciesthroughout the County), purchase emergency medicalsupplies for our volunteer professionals, and are current-ly implementing a

2-way radio network to provide essential communica-tions between the Clubhouse Incident Command Post andfield personnel, including CERT Teams, the newly formedMedical Response Team, and the emerging Pet Care Unit.We will soon be able to conduct simulation training exer-cises using our new radios and emergency response capa-bilities.

March was another busy month for Audio Visual Volunteers.Video training sessions were conducted by Lin Hinshaw, EdFarley, and Ken DeWoody. Volunteers helped out with a StoryTeller night for Theatre Arts and OHSPA brought to AbravanelHall BROADWAY TODAY. The show was enjoyable, but unfortu-nately a disturbing hum was experienced during the show. AVsound volunteers worked diligently to find the culprit but werestymied until they discovered it was the bass player’s amplifiercausing the disturbance. Similar disturbances have occurred in

BALLROOM DANCE CLUB On April 4, we had an “open” Board Meeting with

35 members participating. It was a trial format, butsince it went so well, we might do it this way again. After we hadour regular reports from the Secretary, Treasurer, Membership, etc., we opened the discussions on old and new business withsome very good input from attendees. Here are some of the deci-sions we have made (in no particular order):

1. The May 11 social will be a sit-down dinner catered by TheRanch. There will be appetizers, a choice of prime rib and salmon, dessert, flavored coffees, teas, etc.The price is set at $36 for mem-bers and $39 for non-members. The affair is semi-formal and theband is Pier Group.

2. In order to save some money, starting in June, we will dis-continue the use of callers and printed tickets. Instead, a flier willbe emailed to those with email and one placed in the tubes ofthose without the email. Then, those who want to attend will puta check in the Club’s envelop at the Front Desk. Table assign-ments stay the same.

3. We will not offer a separate table for the band because it isvery rarely used.

4. In order to attract more people to our dance socials, we willoffer, in addition to the mixer in the second intermission, a shortlesson in the first intermission. George and Miriam Mozes willteach one or two steps (patterns) in one dance, for 6-8 minutes.

Page 30: OHCC May 2012

OHCC Newsletter • May 201230

Clubs and Activities

5. Add the dance of Meringue to the list of dances taught onWednesdays.

6. We need to introduce more people to ballroom dancing, especially some of the newcomers. One way to accomplish this isto have a few more dance socials in addition to the ones on thesecond Friday of the month. A decision was made to try offeringa totally free dance social, for all OHCC residents, a few timesduring the year, on the fourth Friday of the month (whenAbravanel Hall is available). We would dance to music from CD’s.

7. We will advertise on Channel 12 on a regular basis as wellas promoting the use of our own website www.oceanhillsdance-club.com.

9. A proposal/request was made to look into utilizing a num-ber of male dance hosts who would be admitted free to our dancesocials as long as they would dance only with the single ladies orthose whose partners are not dancing. Call George with com-ments/suggestions.

BILLIARDS CLUBIf you have not been in the Billiards Room recent-

ly you will find an addition, a new pool cue cabinet,on the rear wall. Our thanks go to, RJ who designed, built andinstalled both the old and the new cue cabinets and who stands

ready to build a third one when the demand warrants. RJ has #16locker in perpetuity as a small thank you for building the cabi-nets. Several of the new cue spaces are already taken. Howeverthere are still a number of cabinet spaces remaining. If interest-ed, make a check out to the OHCC Billiard Club for $16, which isthe $10 first year materials fee plus $6 for one year from May2012 to May 2013. Future years are planned to be $6 per year. The period to May of 2012 is free.

Not to be forgotten in the thanks department is Marshall Coil,Lois Byrne and President Charles Payne. Marshall, an excellentplayer and instructor, gave a very thorough lesson on how to startplaying 9-Ball the right way. At this session, members were ableto review the game’s basics and pick up some tips to improvetheir game.

Many of you have noticed that our pool balls seem cleaner. Asthey are played, pool balls collect dust and dirt and become“sticky.” Well, now they really ARE cleaner, and we have newmember Lois Byrne to thank for that. Without even being asked, she volunteered to take a set home at the end of the day, clean it,and return it the next morning. Lois did all 6 of the tables!

Our thanks also go to President Charles for some mainte-nance work. Over time and use, as well as from players leaning onthem, the table rails loosen or sag a bit, Charles spent severalhours under our six pool tables with ratchet wrench in hand tight-ening the rails. Thank you all!

Vice President Don Farmer presented the 2012 OHCCBilliards Club Kansas Tournament featuring “A “and “B” brack-ets, on March 29.There was no entry fee, and First Prize was brag-ging rights until the next tournament and a spot on our perma-nent Winners’ Plaque. The Safari Park in Escondido has a baby condor on a live camfor viewing. The chick was born March 10. The California condorrecovery program began in the l980’s, when only 22 of the birdsremained in the world. Since then, Safari park has hatched 173California condor chicks and released more than 80 birds into thewild. There are now about 390 condors, half of which are flyingfree in California, Arizona, Baja California, and Mexico. The web-site to watch is: www.sandiegozooglobal.org/video/condor_cam.

There is another live action cam to watch outside the CornellLab in New York. In this case there is a pair of Great Blue Herons.Great blues have nested in this same place for the last four years. The first egg was laid March 28. The herons typically lay eggsevery two-three days until the clutch is complete. After that it willbe 25-30 days before the chicks hatch and will then spend anoth-er 7-8 weeks in the nest before they fledge. There are two camerasthat stream simultaneously, one from above the nest and theother at nest level. The lower camera can record even in dark con-ditions and streams all night long. The website to view the heronsis www.allaboutbirds.org/cornellherons.

Right here at OHCC we can view Blue birds building theirnests and delivering food to their young in the 11 boxes that havebeen placed around the golf course. Some boxes already havenests and eggs in them. PLEASE DO NOT DISTURB OR OPENTHE BOXES, this will interrupt their activities and cause theadults to abandon the nests.

GARDEN CLUBThe Ocean Hills Garden Club meets on the sec-

ond Wednesday of the month at 9:30 am in AbravanelHall. Decadent desserts and assorted beverages before the meet-ing give members an opportunity to socialize. Membership is $10a year. During the year, the Garden Club has field trips to nurs-eries that specialize in plants that grow in our area, garden toursaround the county and speakers who will add to our gardeningexperience and “know how.”

Our speaker for the May meeting will be Pauline J. Sechi.Pauline is originally from Australia and has lived in Fallbrook,Southern California for the past 23 years. She is a NationalGarden Clubs Master Flower Show Judge and is presently serv-ing as Southwestern Judges Council Chairman. She also is theCalifornia Garden Clubs (CGCI) Floral Education Chairman anda member of Dos Valle Garden Club in Palonar District.

Pauline has been traveling and giving programs, demonstra-tions, and Floral Design classes for the past 15 years. She is aCGCI Flower Arranger of the Year honoree; she is a CGCIDesigner’s Choice multi time winner.

At the Garden Club May 9 meeting, she will demonstrate flo-ral design ideas to inspire club members to participate in thisyear’s Flower Show.

Plans are being fine tuned for the Garden Club’s 2012 FlowerShow on June 2-3 and it promises to be better than ever.“Celebrate!” is the theme and celebrate the Garden Club will, remembering holidays, with table settings, miniatures, and hob-bies. Don’t forget the music and refreshments. The stars of theshow, of course, will be the floral arrangements and flowers.Come and see what your neighbors are growing behind thosewhite walls. As an added feature, plants grown and lovingly plant-ed by Garden Club members will be sold.

GGAARRDDEENNIINNGG NNEEWWSS bbyy MMeellvviinnaa TTeerrrryyNow that it has warmed up, it is time to plant subtropicals—

everything from tomatoes, avocados, Acalkypha (chenille plant)to Zingiber (ginger).Tropicals (dahlias included) like deeply dug,humus-rich soil that stays moist for a while after it’s beenwatered. Hibiscus and gardenias may show their subtropicalnatures by displaying solid gold leaves on plants. As these leavesdrop, you know that it is time to fertilize as new growth is aboutto take off.

Start replacing spent flowering plants from the fall with sum-mer blooming plants. Remove foliage on bulbs if brown. If youchoose, it is time to lift bulbs, clean and store in a cool place. Iprefer to leave mine be as I find I lose the same number whetherI store or leave in place. Plant chrysanthemums and zinnias forfall bloom. Prune azaleas. Pick fuchsia blooms and seed pods.Tieup plant stocks to stakes where needed. Divide cymbidiums.Continue systemic every six weeks. Most plants, besides roses, will benefit from systemic. Ortho claims their systemic is goodagainst white fly (my nemesis)! Mulch everything.

More on organic gardening from the refrigerator: The drip-pings from the automatic defrosting tray is best on your houseplants (or use melted ice). Use two tablespoons of skim milk pergallon of water to prevent tomato virus. Mix eggs with Tabasco

Sauce to repel rabbits. Clean out halves of citrus fruit. Push holesin them and fill them with soil and plant with seeds. They makegreat plant starters. When the seeds sprout, bury the “rind pot”in the garden. Avocado pits make great trees that are fun to growfor house plants. The clear plastic baskets that berries or vegeta-bles come in make great miniature green houses. Poke holes intop and bottom of the plastic, fill with sterile soil and plant easyto grow seeds and place in your window sill. Personally, I amexperimenting with nasturtium and morning glory. Next month, Iwill let you know the results and tell you what you can use fromthe garage workshop.

GOLF CLUBGuess what! Exciting things are happening. This

year we are starting something new. Instead of hav-ing a December dinner dance, we will be having a

Golf Derby followed by an outdoor barbeque on Wednesday, July18. Why live in California if we don’t enjoy the weather? Moredetails will follow, but hold the date, July 18, golf, and barbeque.

I do hope your group has signed up for the outside tourna-ment sponsored by O’Connell Landscaping. These folks comethrough for us every year. Food and prizes. It will be held onMonday, May 7 and Tuesday, May 8. I hope you’ve gotten yourmoney in, but if not try last minute as there might be a cancella-tion.

The June special tournament will be sponsored by LenhoffTax and Financial Services. The tournament will be held onMonday, June 11 and Tuesday, June 12. Signups will consist ofnames of group, choice of day and $8 per person. Please put yourenvelope in the appropriate door slot at the Casa. Once again ourthanks go out to the Lenhoff Organization for a delightful day. This tournament will once again be in the able hands of Sharonand John Strickland. However this year, they will have the assis-tance of Carol and Don Vernish. Any questions or if you are sin-gle, call Carol or Don at 760-940-1526.

The next touring amateur that I can report on will be at thescenic Vineyard at Escondido on May 21. On June 18 we will beplaying at the Encinitas Ranch Country Club. These are both fulllength courses, but not too difficult to play. Entry fee for theVineyard is $40 all inclusive, and $49 at Encinitas. The July shot-gun at San Luis Rey Downs will not include a barbeque this yearas we are planning a really special golf Derby and barbeque forJuly 18.

Our next Guys and Doll will be held Saturday, May 12. Makesure you get your group names and $4 per person in by May 5.

HEALTH AND FITNESSOur Next meeting will be on Thursday, May 10 at

1 pm in the Mykonos Room for a program on FootComfort given by Alison of the Foot Comfort Store here in Vista.Different shoes are for different purposes. Also, the choice ofshoe models should be in direct alignment to existing invisiblefoot problems. In the robust world we seniors live in taking goodcare of the footwear we select to be active in is a very importantconsideration for foot comfort which assures that whatever sportwe choose we can participate more effectively and with little orno pain. None of you jocks and jockettes can afford to ignore thisinformation.

Healthy snacks will be included.

more evaluation. Details will follow by email. Contact EllenKippel at [email protected] if you want to come and join us so thatwe know how many cars will be needed. If you want to be a driv-er, let Ellen know. To RSVP if you need a ride let Ellen know byMay 15.

Tom Hogan advised Ellen Kippel that the re-opening of thedog park will be approximately May 1. So, go over with your dogand check it out. The grass is up and he wanted it mowed oncebefore the dog park re-opens. The grass is a very hardy, dogfriendly, grass that should be better than what we had in the dogpark before. New benches have been received and will be in placewhen the dog park re-opens. Thanks for your patience. Please letEllen know if you plan to go to Canine Companions, May 18.

We do want to remind each dog owner that a retractable leashcan cause injury to our Ocean Hills Country Club residents andguests. Recently this type of leash became wrapped around awoman’s legs and she fell. Please keep your dogs on a standardleash not to exceed 6 feet. The owner of each dog must have theirdog or dogs under control at all times.

We all want to protect our pets and ourselves from other ani-mals and/or cars when we take a walk. Rattlesnakes and Coyotescould hurt or kill your dog if you appear unexpectedly. As previ-ously reported to our members, three 3 to 5 foot mature Pacificrattle snakes (grey and green), with about 8 rattles, were recent-ly seen by a resident on a walk with their dog behind the NewVenture Church. The snakes were coiled only 2 or 3 feet off thetrail. One of the snakes struck at the dog but missed her nose bya couple inches. It is best to be wary and cautious.

You should contact your own Vet to see if they have the anti-venom serum available in case of an emergency. However, remember that most vets are only open during the day from 8 amto 5 pm and are usually closed on Saturday afternoons andSundays. Some do and some don’t carry the anti-venom serum. Therefore, your best bet is to call the emergency vet hospital andnot your local vet. It is advisable to call ahead of time so that theanimal hospital can be prepared for your arrival. Timing is criti-cal for the pet’s survival. When walking, please have a cell phonewith you in case of an emergency.

Ellen Kippel called the California Vet Specialists 760-431-2273 in Carlsbad, at 2301 Faraday Avenue and they do carry theanti-venom serum if your animal is bitten by a snake. The cost isabout $700 to $3000 per dose depending on the serum used.Again, to save your dog, please keep the dog on a 6 foot non-retractable leash so that you can better control your dog or dogsin an emergency. Be Safe and Be Careful.

LIBRARY May is time for ‘spring cleaning.’ While you’re

dusting those bookshelves, take a look at the booksand decide which ones you’d like to donate to your Library hereat the Clubhouse. Any recently published books can be added tothe Library for all members to enjoy. And we’ll be so very thank-ful. Just recently the following books were donated:

ROTATING DINNEROur St. Patrick’s Day Brunch was a ripping suc-

cess even though the weather forced us to change thedate to the 24th, Beth and Tim easily seated about

thirty-five people on their patio with plenty of room for a largebar and enough food to feed an army, which we were. We can’tthank them enough for their hosting this event and being confi-dent that the day would be beautiful. Thanks also to SharronRowley for arranging for just the right amount of various dishes.

We all enjoyed meeting new people and realize that we maylive a few doors from each other. Also some of us have lived inother places and know the same people. It’s a small world andthis is a great place to revive old friendships. I did noticed thatsome of us, certainly myself included, said, “Say, haven’t I metyou somewhere?” Luckily the other person had to think about ittoo.

It’s not too late to join Rotating Dinner and participate in oursummer parties. New members are requested to attend two din-ners before hosting one of their own. Members are asked to bringeither two appetizers, a salad or dessert while the hosts are incharge of drinks and main courses. Dues are $10 per person andcan be dropped off at the Front Desk.

We were dark in April as so many members planned to beaway. People were kind enough to volunteer their homes in Mayso we’re getting ready to do the patio parties.A lot of us start withcocktails on our patios and move indoors for dinner to cut downon the after 6 pm shivering. Hopefully you have met people atthese dinners and will invite some of them to dinner privately atyour home.

Bon Appetit.

SEWING, ETC.The March potluck luncheon was a great success.

The tables were attractively decorated in spring colors with bou-quets made not of flowers but of yoyos. Each place setting had aparty favor — a yoyo fob made to mark your scissors or key chain.I know it is the Sewing Club but it could just as easily be the cook-ing club; no one went home hungry. Not being the shy type, Ieven went back for seconds. My poor husband had to fend forhimself that night since I didn’t need any dinner! The programwas about Needlepoint and samples were on display — trulyworks of art. The needlepointers meet on Thursdays from 1 to 4pm and said they would be happy to help anyone who wanted tolearn. A suggestion I found interesting; instead of looking for aneasy project suitable for a beginner, look for project that reallyinterests you so you will have enough incentive to finish it. Isn’tthat a good tip for a lot of things in life?

Sometimes there are Club events that overlap. Two of them, one just past and one a future opportunity, are with the ArtLovers Group and the Garden Club. The Art Lovers invited theSewing Club to a fascinating program on Fiber Art. This was artfrom the ground up. The speaker raised her own sheep, goats, and llamas, sheared them, cleaned the fleece, carded the fiber, spun the yarn, and then made the clothes. She was a fun speak-er and had slides of the whole process. Another type of art fromthe ground up - the Garden Club has a flower show coming up thevery first weekend in June. You are invited to enter an arrange-ment or a flower in the horticultural exhibit. The exhibits needto be set up on June 1 so this gives you all of May to think.

A note about the May 17 Sewing Kit. When you go to theClubhouse to work on a project you sometimes need to bring nee-dles, scissors, etc. How do you get them there and home againsafely? The kit we are making has a place for all the bits andbobs you might need when working on any kind of a project. Itwill be all in one place and you can just grab and go rather than

SKI CLUBOur next and last meeting of the ski season

before the summer break will take place onThursday, May 10 in the Mykonos Room beginning, as usual, withrefreshments at 4 pm. This will be an especially important meet-ing whose focus will be the future of the Ski Club, faced with adiminishing number of skiers, the apparent scarcity of wintersports enthusiasts among new residents, the challenge of findingacceptable alternate pursuits (cruises, for example) and the diffi-culty of attracting nominees to replace existing officers, a con-cern that other clubs also share.

The Board agreed to allow a nominating committee to operateuntil June 1st for the purpose of finding suitable nominees forthe offices of President, Vice-President, Secretary and Treasurer. At the same time, members who wish to run for any of the aboveoffices are encouraged to place their names in a sealed envelopeand leave it in the Ski Club folder at the Front Desk.

In any event, the Ski Club still has obligations for the summerparty on the Lanai on Thursday, July 19 and the holiday gala inAbravanel Hall on Saturday, December 8. The gala has become apopular and successful joint enterprise of the Racquet, Sailingand Ski clubs. Watch for further announcements.
