The High Holidays are about to begin, and after a 90o start to Fall, some cooler weather is finally here. Baruch

Hashem!

One of the wonderful aspects of this time of the year is a sense that we are beginning the year together.

In Judaism, the sense of community is very strong. Both the English word synagogue (from the Greek

synagoge) and the Hebrew word Beit Keneset come from roots that mean “gather together.” When we come to

shul, we are gathering with others; we are forming community.

For some, coming to synagogue is deeply spiritual. For others, it may be intellectually stimulating. And for still

others, it’s a great chance to socialize. All of these are wonderful reasons to come to shul!

It’s like the joke:

Beth has been coming to shul for some time. She davens. She layens Torah. She gives drashes. And recently

Judy has started coming more too.

The rabbi approaches Judy, “Judy, it’s so wonderful that you’ve been coming to shul. Just curious, what’s

bringing you to shul lately?”

Judy responds, “Well rabbi, Beth comes to shul to talk to God, and I… I come to shul to talk to Beth.”

Whether we come for spiritual reasons or to connect with others, we make our shul a Beit Keneset, a house of

gathering.

The High Holidays are a spectacular time. For those who wish to daven it up (that’s the technical term), it’s just

great. And for those who love a really big reunion with some of their best Jewish friends, it’s also fabulous.

Whatever your reason for attending this year, it’ll be great to see you there.

Shana Tova u’Metuka! May you have a good and sweet new year!

Rabbi Moshe Smolkin

Sisterhood News

As we prepare for the High Holiday’s ten Days of Awe, I am flooded by feelings of gratitude for so many in our

congregation. First and foremost, I appreciate the Board and the many volunteers who give their time and

expertise to help sustain OZS.

I’m grateful to the religious school teachers, who interact with our children and bring to life Jewish teachings.

Most especially Rabbi Smolkin, whose spirit and energy uplifts us and helps us experience the holiness of Jewish

observance, not just in this season but always. Thank you, Rabbi.

At this time of year, every year the High Holiday worship committee organizes the High Holiday services with the

aim to include as many people as possible while making it all run smoothly. Thank you to the committee!

Many congregants will have received Honors postcards in the mail asking you to be here to participate in the

mitzvah of fulfilling an honor during the High Holy Days. Please, accept the honor, and honor the Torah by your

presence on the bimah.

Wishing each of you shana tova tikatevu, a sweet and happy new year!

MONTHLY THOUGHTS FROM THE RELIGIOUS COMMITTEE The Kiddush for Rosh Hashanah

As the last column for 5776, we turn to one of the first things that many of us will do for the new year

of 5777: say kiddush before the erev Rosh Hashanah dinner.

The Rosh Hashanah kiddush, like that for the festivals, is similar to that for Shabbat, but with some key

differences. Like every kiddush, it begins with the blessing over the wine. Along with the festival version, the

Rosh Hashanah kiddush diverges from that for Shabbat in the main paragraph: instead of remembering the

Creation, we thank God for choosing us, out of all peoples, to give the mitzvot, which provide us a path to

holiness (with the phrase beginning asher bachar banu).

The prayer then continues (va-titten lanu), by praising God for giving us the special day we are

celebrating. It is interesting to note that, as in the Torah itself, our usual name for the first day of the year is not

used. There are, instead, two terms: yom ha-zikaron, the day of remembrance, and yom teruah, the day of

blowing the shofar. These two ideas, along with God’s sovereignty (included in the basic blessing of the

kiddush, with the words melech ha-olam, ruler of the universe), are the core elements of the Rosh Hashanah

musaf service, with its verses of Malchuyot (kingship), Zichronot (remembrance), and Shofarot.

“Remembrance” here has several meanings: we remember our relationship with God, but also acknowledge

that God has remembered us in our need, notably, as in the continuation of the main paragraph of the kiddush,

when we were enslaved in Egypt, when God brought us out to freedom.

In the concluding section, rather than thanking God for bestowing on us the joyous festivals, as we do

on Sukkot, Pesach, and Shavuot, the Rosh Hashanah kiddush testifies that God’s word is truth and endures

forever (u-d’varecha emet v-kayam la-ad). The final blessing again states that God made both the people Israel

and this Day of Remembrance holy.

On Shabbat, we would proceed next to the washing of the hands and blessing of the bread, but on Rosh

Hashanah, as on the festivals, we conclude the kiddush with our praise of God for having kept us alive to

celebrate the occasion, singing the she-heheyanu.

After the holidays, this column will resume with a series on the Friday night service.

JOIN THE TEN-FOR-TEN CLUB

Rabbi Nachman of Bratslav said: “Nine Tsaddikim (righteous ones) do not make a minyan, but one ordinary person

joining them completes the minyan.” I don’t know how many tsadikkim there are here in Lexington, but we have plenty of

ordinary folks, and it would be wonderful if a few more of us would come to weekday minyan. To help accomplish this, we

have established the Ten-for-Ten Club.

Joining the Ten-for-Ten Club is very simple: all you have to do is commit to attending afternoon minyan ten times

in the next year. There are no big prizes (other than spiritual ones), but those who complete this commitment will be

recognized for their contributions to the OZS community. To join, or for more information, contact Jon Glixon or Lisa at
