Trophic Levels of the Food Chain
*Click on a given trophic level in order to learn more
ProducersPrimary Consumers
Tertiary Consumer (same as Secondary Consumers)
Secondary Consumers
Producer• Largest portion of the food chain.
Autotrophic organisms; meaning, they produce there own food from the SUN. Click below to watch a video on
how to remember the facts about photosynthesis!Photosynthesis

Secondary Consumer• Secondary consumers are
carnivores because they eat the primary consumers, which are
other animals.
IMPORTANT!1. All consumers are also known as
heterotrophic organisms because they do NOT produce their own food, as autotrophs (producers) do.
2. Autotrophs = PRODUCERS
3. Heterotrophs = HERBIVORES, OMNIVORES and CARNIVORES (ALL consumers)
LIGHTNING• Cause: in thunderstorms,
when liquid and ice particles above the freezing level collide and build up large electrical fields

TORNADO• Cause: when warm, moist air
along the ground rushes upward, meeting cooler, drier air.
Click to watch Tornado Video!
THUNDER• Cause: caused by the lightning
bolt! Sharp cracks of thunder are produced as the air around the lightning bolt gets super heated (60,000 F) and rapidly expands.

HURRICANE• Cause: Earthquakes generated
in a subduction zone. A subduction zone is an area where an oceanic plate is being forced down into the mantle by plate tectonics.

Cause: Sudden release of energy in the Earth’s crust that creates seismic waves.
