About Organizers

Pandit Deendayal Petroleum University (PDPU), established in 2007 is a research-led university based in the vibrant city of Gandhinagar in Gujarat. PDPU is promoted by Gujarat State Petroleum Corporation (GSPC) and established by GERMI as a Private University under an act of Gujarat state legislature. The University is recognized by the University Grants Commission (UGC). Today, PDPU is widely recognized as a center of excellence in energy education, management, liberal studies, and quality research and for its strong industry interface. The University is recognized by Scientific & Industrial Research Organization by Department of Scientific & Industrial Research, Ministry of Science & Technology, and Government of India. The objective is to create a world class university in energy education and research with special focus on entire energy sector. The University addresses the need for trained and specialized human resources for the energy and infrastructure industry worldwide.

Gujarat Power Corporation Ltd. (GPCL) has been playing the role of developer and catalyser in the energy sector in the state. GPCL identifies the power projects based on various fuels, prepares techno-economic feasibility reports for such power projects, identifies suitable private joint sector parties and implements these jointly with the selected parties. After the power project is identified, GPCL obtains various statutory and non-statutory clearances to be obtained for implementation of the power project, such as, water and air pollution clearance, forest clearance, environmental and forest clearance, civil aviation clearance etc. It also pursues the formalities related to acquisition of land under the Land Acquisition Act and ties up the fuel linkages for the power project. GPCL has already installed Asia’s largest Solar Park of 500MW capacity. Further, GPCL plays a key role as project implementing agency to promote renewable energy in the state.

Offshore Wind Potential of Gujarat

Key Issues & Challenges on the Agenda

About Seminar

Indian State Wise Onshore Wind Installed Capacityup to 31.12.2013

The economic growth in India is opening up great potential for development of renewable resources. Technological

advancement in this sector is essential for meeting up with ever increasing energy demand of the country. Offshore Wind Power in Gujarat has the potential to generate and deliver sustainable supplies of clean, renewable electricity. Very recently, Govt. of India has announced draft offshore wind power policy which is under active discussion and finalization. Gujarat being located on the western coast of India and having 1600 km long coastline has also great potential for offshore wind power projects.

This will provide an opportunity for companies around the world to contribute towards development of this sector, by providing expertise, equipment, services, finance and operational support for Offshore Wind Power development activities in Gujarat and India at large. Keeping this in mind, Pandit Deendayal Petroleum University (PDPU) in

coordination with Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, Energy and Petrochemicals Department-Government of Gujarat (EPD-GOG) and Gujarat Power Corporation Ltd. (GPCL) is organizing a one day International seminar on “Offshore Wind Power Potential of Gujarat” for deliberations related to the resource assessment, policies, issues & challenges. Government experts, researchers, industry, university representatives and consultants will share their experiences and information on a wide range of topics related to successful implementation of Offshore Wind power projects. This seminar is aimed at bringing various stakeholders in Wind sector on one platform and understanding their perspectives for successful growth of this sector.

Offshore Wind Power in IndiaIndia’s renewable market is among the largest and the fastest growing

market of the world. India has been consistently ranked among the top

five countries (globally) in terms of its market potential for renewable

energy. Especially past decade has seen wind energy as the world’s

fastest growing energy source on a percentage basis in India. With a

cumulative installed capacity of over 20149.50* MW, onshore wind

power currently accounts for almost 70 percent of the total installed

capacity in the renewable energy sector in India. In India preliminary

assessments for offshore wind projects indicate prospects along the

coastline of Kerala, Gujarat, Karnataka and Goa. The wind resource

data collected for the coastline of Rameshwaram and Kanyakumari

in Tamil Nadu and Gujarat Coast shows reasonable potential. A

preliminary assessment suggests potential to establish around 1 GW

capacity wind farm each along the coastline of Rameshwaram and

Kanyakumari in Tamil Nadu (* - Source: MNRE)
