The substructure choice

• The wind industry has a variety of substructure choices:

• Mono piles

• Concrete gravity

• Tripods

• Jackets

• Floating

• Hybrids

• At present the dominant form is the mono pile

• This will change as turbines get bigger and the industry moves into

deeper waters

• Jackets will come into their own

• Floating is in its infancy but it has a number of advantages

• Primarily water depth limitations

• Suitable for any water depth over 40 m

Beatrice: why did we choose jackets ?

• Water depth too deep for monopiles

• Comparison of Jackets and tripod’s

• Results favoured jackets

• Talisman had more jacket experience

• Fabricators / designers revealed more confidence in jackets:

• Potential to improve design and reduce costs

• Scaling up jackets for serial production

• Lighter so less steel and more installation vessel flexibility

• Greater familiarity

Application of Jackets in Offshore wind

• The first application occurred at the Beatrice Demonstrator Project

• Two OWEC towers

• Fabricated by BIFAB and installed in 2006

• Operational for 8 years

• To date more than 100 jackets have been installed

• 2008: Alpha Ventos, Germany - 6 OWEC Towers, 2008, BIFAB

• 2011: Ormonde, UK - 31 OWEC Towers, BIFAB

• 2012: Thornton Bank, Belgium: 49 OWEC Towers, Smulders

• 2014: Nord Sea Ost Germany: 48 jackets, Aker Solutions

• Design

• Most turbine jackets to date are of the OWEC Tower design

• BIFAB and Atkins have announce a new design

• Some developers are developing in house designs, DONG
