Offshore substationsMore and larger wind farms are being located offshore. The capacity of these wind farms ranges from few hundred MW up to 5 GW.

To minimise the electrical transmission losses & cable costs, the turbines in such wind farms are electrically connected to an offshore substation by HVAC, reactive compensation or HVDC technologies, depending on which solution is the most effective.

Ramboll implements its extensive offshore experience into the design of our client’s substation with strong focus on safety, operation and maintenance, and cost- effective design.

The optimisation, development and design of the substation is highly dependent on the actual location and the operation & maintenance philosophy for the substation and for the overall wind farm.

Topside servicesRamboll provides multidisciplinary engineering consultancy for all areas within offshore substations:

• General layout development with consideration to safety, mechanical handling, cable installation, operation and maintenance

• HSE design including quantitative risk analysis, evacuation philosophies, fire protection sytems, and systems for environmental protection

• Electrical and grid compliance studies• Specification of high, medium, and low voltage

switchgear, transformers, and reactors• Cable specification and layout design• Specification of station control systems, inclusive

protection, metering, and SCADA systems• Specification and design of low voltage and utility

systems such as LV switchboards, UPS and cables, fire alarm system, navigational aid, weather station, radio communication, PACS, CCTV, PA/GA, Line of Sight, telephone lines, fiber distribution and LAN/Wifi networks.

• Cyber security/OT security specification and design such as risk assessment, threat modelling, asset inventory, policies and procedures

• Specification and design of mechanical systems such as HVA/C, diesel gensets, and cranes

• Topside structural design considering fabrication, transportation, installation, and operation phases

• Substructure design including j-tubes for cables, boat landings and foundation

• Accommodation facilities and helideck if required• Installation engineering for topsides and substructures as

well as cable pull-in planning• Weight control of all disciplines during all project stages

establishment of operation & maintenance programs

As the world leader in offshore wind turbine foundation design, Ramboll also offers complete substation designs tailored for offshore wind farms. Our specialised engineers carry expertise within optimisation, development and design of both topside facilities and substructures.

Substructure designRamboll has more than 40 years of experience in designing substructures and masters various substructure designs such as jackets, tripods, monopiles, and gravity-based substructures for offshore wind farms worldwide. Ramboll’s overall layout of the substructure is driven by geographical position (soil and environmental conditions) together with topside size and weight. The overall layout is followed by a tailored design phase focused on weight optimisation, robustness, fabrication friendliness, installations strategy, and operation & maintenance costs.

Design softwareThe structural design is carried out using Ramboll’s ownstate-of-the-art software programme ROSAP or SACS Offshore Structural Analysis package. All topsides and substructure designs are performed within a fully integrated multi-discipline 3D system (e.g. AVEVA E3D, & Autodesk Plant 3D). For structural detailing, programs such as Tekla, Solidworks and Autodesk AdvanceSteel are used.

Design codesThe designs can be performed according to any acknowledged standard e.g. DNV GL, IEC, IEEE SA, NFPA, ISO, API, or other international codes, as required to have the project certified bya certifying authority.

Optimum solutionsRamboll is the ideal partner for carrying out studies to determine the kind of facility that is most advantageous at a given grid. Our long track record of feasibility studies, concept designs, frontend engineering designs and detailed designs for clients’ operating offshore facilities will ensure that we will develop the optimum solution. Based on our cooperation with a large number of fabrication yards and installation contractors we ensure optimised fabrication and installation processes.

Significant projectsIn 2021 Ramboll was awarded the design of the first US built offshore substation for the South Fork wind farm. In 2019/2020 Ramboll performed the conceptual and detailed design of the topside and substructure for the Greater Changhua 1 & 2a offshore wind farms in Taiwan.

In 2016 Ramboll was assigned the project SPIC Binhai North Phase 2 and became the first non-Chinese company to design an offshore wind farm and substation in China. Other recent substation projects count Borssele I & II in the Netherlands, Hornsea One and Westermost Rough; both in the UK. Earlier Ramboll also designed the substation for the Danish landmark project Anholt offshorewind farm.
