Emergency evacuations from an offshore facility can arise due to many causes and under a range of diverse and dangerous circumstances, not all of which can be foreseen. A key objective is to avoid significant incidents escalating into major incidents. To achieve this goal, emergency evacuations require integrated, cross-discipline coordination and a portfolio of evacuation options.

Emergency evacuation from an oil & gas rig is primarily via a davit or free-fall lifeboat. However, in order to make provisions for personnel who cannot access the lifeboats during an emergency, an alternative secondary means of evacuation is traditionally provided. Injuries and fatalities associated with traditional means of secondary evacuation have seen a rapid increase over the years, due to the significantly higher elevations of oil and gas facility decks (80-120ft).

MARINE EVACUATION

The Survitec Offshore Mass Evacuation System has been designed specifically to address hazards associated with these more ‘traditional’ approaches to secondary evacuation. The fully enclosed, deck mounted system is suitable for operating heights of up to 75-80 metres and provides a protected means of evacuation from an offshore facility. The system can move a maximum of 150 personnel from topsides down to sea level via a fire and smoke protected vertical, telescoping, escape chute directly into a single SOLAS rated high capacity liferaft within 10 minutes of deployment.

The liferaft is connected to the chute and stabilisation system by means of an integrated breakaway landing platform, which can be disconnected from the raft once personnel have boarded, enabling the raft to move away from the hazard. The system design ensures that the breakaway landing platform, chute and stabilisation system remain in place and are able to be recovered to the deck for re-use.

The system can be configured for use with 50, 70, 75, 100 or 150 man rafts and is intended to be used primarily as a reliable, alternative means of evacuation when the main life boats are impaired or inaccessible.

Key features of the system include:

Immersion Suits

The 1000 Series With the introduction of additional EASA (European Aviation Safety Agency) regulations in 2006, we commenced development on a new generation of survival suit, the 1000 Series. Using the latest offshore sizing information and feedback from offshore workers, we have developed a suit built to fit today’s offshore work population.

Manufactured utilising the most elite, technologically advanced fabric and components available, the outer shell of the suit is waterproof, breathable and inherently flame retardant. The thermal lining uses state-of-the-art Outlast® Phase Change Materials (PCM) technology, to improve thermal comfort and reduce thermal stress. It offers anti-static properties as well as improved comfort and protection.

Available in a range of options including training, passenger and abandonment variants, the design premise ensures each offshore worker is equipped with the same equipment from their initial training, right through to an emergency situation. This approach has worked to inspire trust confidence in the suit, which is critical when faced with an offshore emergency situation.

Immersion Suits

Quick Don Immersion SuitThe Quick Don Immersion Suit is a unique and novel approach to providing protection where a constant wear anti-exposure immersion suit is impractical. Designed to provide cold water immersion protection in an emergency situation, the suit protects against cold shock and the effects of long term immersion in cold water.

The single size suit is equipped with unique donning aids, giving it a donning time of 60 seconds and features an air expulsion system, high visibility gloves and hood.

Offshore Mooring Systems – Mooring Flotation

SurvitecGroupcansupplyanumberofhawserflotationmethods:

Lace-on FloatSurvitec Group lace-on floats are manufactured from a heavy duty polyamide fabric with expanded polyethylene closed cell foam strips. Floats are workable between temperatures -30°C and +65°C and offer good resistance against oil and chemicals. Each float has brass eyelets and available in either 1.06mtrs or 2.06mtrs lengths. The width will depend upon the rope size.

Floating Pick-up/Messenger RopeManufactured from high tenacity co-polymer yarns and available in 3, 4 or 8 strand, floating pick-up/ messenger rope is flexible and easy to handle and provides excellent abrasion resistance and strength. Providing permanent floatation in water, the system is fully UV stabilised and the wet strength is equal to dry strength.

Chafe ChainsChafe chains can be supplied configured to a customer’s own specification, ourrangeofchafechainsinclude:

Inherent Buoyancy Flotation SystemHawsers that incorporate our integral floatation systems are supplied with an additional layer of closed cell buoyancy foam ensuring that sufficient buoyancy is calculated to support the hawser in seawater. This is secured using an additional outer protective layer which can also be covered in a tough resilient polyurethane elastomer coating. The system works to enhance the mooring hawser’s abrasion resistance to external items in the field and has the added benefit of reducing the amount the rope will flex with the wave action.

Tubular Rope FloatSurvitec Group tubular rope floats are manufactured from closedcell polyethylene foam, encapsulated within a tough polyurethaneelastomer skin. This high performance outer skin is resistant to ultraviolet degradation and provides protection from abrasion. Tubular rope floats can be supplied factory fitted, or ‘split’ for retro-fitting to existing hawser operations by banding or strapping.

Hydrostatic Release Equipment

Survitec offers a range of Hammar H20 hydrostatic release units, designed for liferafts from 6 up to 150 persons. During installation, the white strong rope of Hammar H20 is secured to the liferaft deck cradle and attached to the liferaft lashing with a sliphook. If the ship sinks the water pressure will, within 4 metres, activate the sharp knife which cuts the rope allowing the liferaft to float free. As the ship sinks, the liferaft painter line will be stretched and the liferaft starts to inflate. The Red Weak Link™ breaks and survivors can board the floating liferaft. The Hammar H20 needs no annual service, maintenance or spare parts.
