The IOC Future Olympic Games Host Team provided an update regarding the arrangements for the Brisbane 2032 presentation and discussed the key activities planned before and after the Session. The Future Olympic Games Host Team, led by Ms Jacqueline Barrett, led the engagement with the Brisbane 2032 partners during the Continuous and Targeted Dialogue Phases.

Meeting Purpose: The Premier addressed attendees participating in the Premier’s Breakfast, held at the Gabba.

The Breakfast engaged approximately 300 people including key stakeholders from the business, tourism, transport, architect, construction and economic development industries.

The Breakfast was hosted by the Honourable Dr Steven Miles MP, Deputy Premier and Minister for State Development, Infrastructure, Local Government and Planning, and aligned with the final Brisbane 2032 presentation to the 138th IOC Session.

The Breakfast consisted of a live cross by the Premier and Lord Mayo, speeches by the Deputy-Premier, the Honourable Stirling Hinchliffe MP, Minister for Tourism Industry Development and Innovation and Minister for Sport, and the Honourable Cameron Dick MP, Treasurer and Minister for Investment, a keynote address and a question-and-answer session.

Meeting Purpose: The Premier attended an online meeting with Iwatani Corporation, Japan’s leading hydrogen supplier, to reaffirm the Queensland Government’s support for its involvement in the development of the State’s green hydrogen sector though its partnership with Stanwell Corporation on the Central Queensland Hydrogen (CQ-H2) project.

As the leading the Japanese consortia for this project, Iwatani Corporation provided an update on the CQ-H2 project.

The Premier provided an update regarding Queensland’s transformational work to establish green hydrogen and build a large-scale hydrogen supply chain in the State.

The Premier acknowledged Iwatani’s commitment through the Iwatani-Stanwell consortium, which will play a significant role in helping Queensland achieve this. It will also provide considerable benefit to the development of Central Queensland.

Meeting Purpose: The Premier attended an online meeting with Sumitomo Corporation to congratulate them on their partnership with Gladstone regional stakeholders and received a briefing on their Gladstone Ecosystem Hydrogen project.

The meeting provided an opportunity for the Premier to acknowledge Sumitomo Corporation as a long-term investor in Queensland’s mining and resources sector and recognise Sumitomo an early mover in Queensland’s hydrogen sector.

Sumitomo provided an update regarding their recent signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with key regional stakeholders in Gladstone, and their vision for Gladstone to be Australia’s first zero emission region and for the establishment of the Energy Innovation Initiative (EII) in March 2021 to progress the development of a global hydrogen supply chain.

Sumitomo also discussed their role as a founding member of the Chubu (Choo-boo) Hydrogen Utilisation Committee, which seeks to create local demand in the Central Japan region.

Meeting Purpose: The Premier attended an online meeting with ENEOS Corporation to receive a briefing regarding the development of their green hydrogen project in Queensland.

The Premier congratulated ENEOS Corporation on finalising their investment in Edenvale Solar Farm with Sojitz Corporation, and for commencing construction. The Queensland-based project is ENEOS Corporations first investment in Australia’s renewable energy sector and is one of the largest Japanese solar investments in Australia to date.

As the official energy supplier of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games, ENEOS discussed their work to have Queensland green hydrogen used in official Games vehicles. Meeting Purpose: The Premier presented to the 138th IOC Session regarding the Election of the Host of the Games of the XXXV Olympiad.

The over 80 IOC Members in attendance received welcome remarks from Dr Thomas Bach, President, IOC, and a briefing on the new approach to the candidature process by Ms Kristen Kloster, Chair, IOC Future Host Commission.

These remarks were followed by a 45-minute presentation by key Brisbane 2032 representatives regarding the Games proposal, including The Honourable Scott Morrison MP, Prime Minister of Australia, The Right Honourable the Lord Mayor of Brisbane, Councillor Adrian Schrinner and Mr John Coates AC, President, Australian Olympic Committee (AOC).

Following the presentation, 15 minutes were allocated to a question-and-answer session, following which the IOC Members in attendance placed their vote.

After the votes were cast and scrutineering conducted, the IOC President announced Brisbane as the host of the Games of the XXXV Olympiad (2032).

The IOC President, AOC President, Premier and Lord Mayor then signed the Olympic Host Contract (OHC).

The IOC emphasised the importance of taking time for early planning and to keep resourcing and expenditure to a minimum where possible in these early planning years.

The Premier thanked the IOC Future Olympic Games Hosts Team for the support provided during the Continuous and Targeted Dialogue phases and acknowledged the excellent working relationship developed between the Brisbane 2032 partners and the IOC.

The Premier welcomed the opportunity to work closely with the IOC’s Games Host Team over the coming months and years.

Meeting Purpose: The Premier participated in a tour of the Tokyo 2020 International Broadcast Centre (IBC) conducted by Mr Yiannis Exarchos, Chief Executive Officer, Olympic Broadcast Service (OBS).

The International Broadcast Centre (IBC) is the temporary home for OBS and the Rights Holding Broadcasters during each Games and provides broadcasters with customised space for offices, studios and control rooms, as well as other services. All coverage from each competition venue comes to the IBC before it is transmitted to the world.

During the tour the Premier visit the NBC and Channel 7 studios and attended the daily OBS Briefing with media and key OBS stakeholders.

The tour provided an opportunity to discuss how broadcasting changed over the course of recent Olympics, how the pandemic has driven innovations in Olympic broadcasting and how broadcast may be delivered by 2032.

The Premier met with representatives from the Los Angeles 2028 Organizing Committee (LA28) who provided a briefing on their progress towards delivering the Games.

The meeting provided a unique opportunity to discuss the learnings of LA28 in their first six to 12 months following award.

During the meeting, the LA28 representatives discussed key including key aspects of Games planning and delivery including governance arrangements, sustainability, commercial opportunities and challenges and the importance of strong stakeholder networks and relationships.

LA28 confirmed the focus of the Organizing Committee for the Olympic Games (OCOG) during their first 3 – 4 years had been on commercial revenue raising.

LA28 also confirmed the importance of keeping teams small and focused in the early years of Games planning.
