The Origins of Earth Day

• The idea for Earth Day evolved over a period of seven years starting in 1962. It was founded by Senator Gaylord Nelson. He thought the Earth should be celebrated once every year, so he flew to Washington D.C to propose his idea to Attorney General Robert Kennedy.

• Also known as the ecology flag, the symbol in the top left corner is a fusion of the letters “e” and “o” which represent environment and organism. The colors stand for pure air and green land. It was created by Ron Cob.

• It was designed by earth day pioneer John McConnell and was inspired by the first pictures ever taken of the Earth during the first space travel in 1969.

Effects of Pollution

• Green house gasses cause global warming.• Smoke can mix with fog and make smog, which can

be deadly to many people.• Water pollution can kill many fish and cut down on

drinking water supply. • Human Waste can kill off many plants, pollute water,

and ruin our environment and mother earth.

• The four rules that government passed were the Environmental Policy Act (1969), the Clean Air Act (1970), the Clean Water Act (1977) and fuel efficiency standards for automobiles.

• These four rules help us clean the earth and prevent it from getting more polluted than what it already is.
