We launched the New England Pond Hockey Classic tournament eight years ago, with the hopes of creating an event to provide the hockey community with a competitive, traditional and nostalgic hockey experience. Our goal was to create an event to benefit everyone involved; from local and regional businesses to the hockey community, charitable organizations, sponsors and of course our participants. Over the last 8 years our tournament portfolio has grown to host events in New Hampshire, Vermont and Montana however our most successful event is right here in the Lakes Region of NH!

This year marks the 8th Annual New England Pond Hockey Classic tournament on Meredith Bay. We will see 270 teams and close to 2000 participants come into the area for a weekend of hockey, camaraderie and relaxation. This event has grown to be one of the most sought after and largest pond hockey tournaments in North America and we believe this is because of the people and businesses in the region. The NEPHC tournament brings in an estimated $2 million of economic stimulus into the region during one weekend in the winter. Our participants come from all over North America to compete but we draw heavily from greater Boston and many of our participants revisit the region outside of the PHC weekend.

The success of our event in NH is attributable in large part to the participation of local businesses and organizations.. We appreciate them showing our participants and fans what the Lakes Region is all about and hope to see you out on Lake Winnipesaukee the weekend of February 3rd-5th.

New England PHC teams play 4v4

1. The winner of a cap-tain’s coin toss will de-termine which goal to defend. Teams will switch goals after first half.

2 . Al l players must wear helmets and hockey skates. Protective equip-ment is optional but highly recommended.

3. No goalies, goalie equipment or sticks per-mitted.

4. All teams must have light and dark jerseys or uniforms.

5. All rinks will start and stop on the master horn.

6 . Penalties will be called for rule infractions. Penalties called by rink officials are final. A mi-nor penalty will result in possession of the puck awarded to the opposing team. Rink Officials will have the discretion to also award a goal to the

opposing team when a minor penalty is flagrant and/or a team is consis-tently playing in a reck-less manner.

7. Any major penalty, which includes any action that could possibly injure another player, will result in that player being eject-ed from the tournament. The team that received the ejection will play the remainder of the tourna-ment short-handed (3 vs. 4) or (2 vs. 3). Rink offi-cial will determine major penalties.

8. Abuse of rink officials will be considered a ma-jor penalty. This includes yelling, swearing, or argu-ing about calls.

9. No checking is al-lowed. Such action will result in a minor penalty unless deemed serious enough to be a major (rink officials discretion).

10. No slapshots al-lowed. Such action will result in a minor penalty.

11. Players cannot fall or lay on the ice in an ef-

fort to protect the goal area. Such action will re-sult in a minor penalty.

12. Goaltending is not allowed. A player may not patrol, “camp out” or remain stationary in the crease area and act as a goaltender. A de-fender may deflect the puck in the crease area,

but the defender must do so while continuing to move through the crease area. The crease area is defined as an imaginary box extending out four feet from the outside cor-ners of the goal.

To many people today the thought of Lake Winnipesau-kee brings to mind summer fun, baby blue skies, rich green mountains and the dark blue waters of this tranquil mountain lake. However many years ago this was not the case, Lake Win-nipesaukee (or as it was known then Lake Winnipehockey) was once synonymous with pond hockey. Legend has it, many years ago in the dead of winter this area came alive. Native America tribes from all over the Northeast flocked to this great lake to stake their claim as the Pond Hockey Champions. Wars were put on hold, grudges forgotten and truces formed for

lowing year hundreds of tribes from all over North American made their way to Lake Win-nipesaukee for a chance to hoist this miraculous trophy.

As years passed and countless champions crowned, the tourna-ment went on. Until one year, as the settlers from Europe began to impede on the natives land the trophy was hidden. Dur-ing a battle in what is now the town of Meredith, the settlers attempted to steal this trophy for themselves. Risking his own life, a young warrior tracked down the settlers took back the trophy and buried it somewhere on Bear Island. On his way back across to main land, this young man lost his life when he fell through the ice, taking with him the whereabouts of this coveted trophy. With the trophy lost the tournament was never played again.

Countless explorations have been made to find the where-abouts of this lost relic with no success. Thought lost forever, this trophy has become folklore with many wondering if it ever existed at all. During the sum-mer of 2009 a group of dedi-cated archeologists set out to finally discover the resting place of the Lake Winnipehockey’s Cup. With state of the art equip-ment these scientists from all over the world finally located its whereabouts and unearthed the trophy in the interior of Bear Island.

After some careful restora-tion, Lake Winnipehockey’s Cup has once again been up for claims. See the teams below who have won it in the past. Who will hoist it this year? Only time will tell!

It was not un-common for tribes to save the best warriors for this annual event because winning it not only meant bragging rights for the tribe but also brought great pride and satisfaction to their villages.

As the tournament grew, the tournament Chiefs called a meeting to discuss the creation of what would become the most coveted trophy in all of sports. 14. Saucer passes (i.e. pucks that are lifted low, below the knee) are acceptable.

15. If a puck goes out of bounds, the last team to touch it loses possession. During re-start, the defender must give his opponent 2-stick lengths of space.

16. There are no off-sides or icing calls.

17. Goals must be scored from the attacking side of cen-ter ice.

18. Rink Officials will call out the score after each goal. This includes goals scored by players or awarded from minor penalties.

19. Teams must give their opponents 1/2 ice after a goal

is scored or an infraction takes place.

20. Games will be composed of two 15-minute halves with a 2-minute halftime for the New England, Lake Champlain and Montana tourneys - Big Apple two 12-minute halves with a 2-minute halftime

21. Pool Play games can end in a tie. However if playoff games end in a tie, the play will move to sudden death format.

22. All games are running-time and substitutions can be made during play (“on-the-fly”) or while a puck is being retrieved. There is no stoppage of play after a goal is scored, or after a penalty is awarded. It is up to each team to ensure that there are only four players on the ice.

23. Players can only play on one team.

24. Substitutions must be made by 8:00 a.m. on the first day of the tournament. No other substitutions throughout the tournament are allowed. The four to eight players that are on your roster (depending on division) at 8:00 a.m. on the first day of the event must be the same players that play on your team throughout the tournament.

25. Setting picks in offensive zone is not allowed. Deference will be given to a defender in front of their own net where their progress is impeded by the pick or interference of an offensive player.

26. All players must visibly display their credentials dur-ing the game. Players without credentials are not allowed to play.

27. Games start and stop on the master horn, for every min-ute a team is late they will be penalized a goal. If a team fails to show up for a game they will forfeit the game with the final score of 15-0
