Laurel Oaks Neighborhood Association Newsletter - November 2010 1 November 2010 Volume III, Issue XI OFFICIAL PUBLICATION OF THE Laurel Oaks Neighborhood Association Dear Neighbors, I want to introduce myself to you as the new president of the LONA. My name is Ellen Kelsey and I have enjoyed living in this neighborhood for the past 11 years. While coming home from work one day, I saw the notice for the general neighborhood meeting held in September 2010 and became curious. I had never attended any of the meetings or events in the past and thought it was time to check it out. At the meeting, I met several of the other board members along with some neighbors. It quickly became apparent that a handful of people volunteer their time to keep this association running and that they could use more help. Many of them have been volunteering for years and were able to share valuable knowledge and history for our area. I also learned that we were in need of a new president. By the end of the meeting, I decided to volunteer and give some of my time as well in support of our neighborhood. Our board meetings are held quarterly. We have already had our first meeting and discussed a number of topics. Some of these topics included new neighborhood events that I believe will be fun and benefit everyone. Stay tuned for more details! I feel like a sports car that goes from 0 to 100 mph in 10 seconds. I went from never attending a meeting or function to being president of the LONA in one evening! I am excited to learn more about the neighborhood, meet new people and see how we can improve what I believe is already a great community. I want to encourage others to get involved and stay connected by continuing to read this newsletter and subscribe to the email list via the LONA Yahoo! Group. If you have some time to volunteer, let one of us know and we’ll get in touch with you for the next event. Best Regards, Ellen Kelsey Caraway: Eagle Scout Project Ready for your Enjoyment! Former Caraway student Ben Koons completed his Eagle project at the school over several weekends in September. For his project, he created a nature trail in the woods at the front of the school and removed several invasive species. He had a volunteer crew (neighbors, family and friends) of nearly two-dozen people, who put in more than 100 man-hours to complete the project. The trail has 4 entrances. The first two face the flag pole parking lot by the new picnic tables and connect in a large rock clearing. The third trail- head faces the gym, while the fourth is along the track facing Oak View Park. Come experience the natural beauty of these woods and take a walk through them whenever you come by. Thanks to Ben and his team!!! Mistletoe Market We’re celebrating the 25th anniversary of Mistletoe Market’s Annual Christmas Boutique! Mistletoe Market, started 25 years ago in the Laurel Oaks neighborhood. For nine years the craft sale was held in one of its member’s home, just around the corner from Kathy Caraway Elementary School. Since that time we have been in several locations. For the past five years the show has been held in the Historic Walker House in Leander. We’d love to invite our neighbors to this year’s show on November 11, 12 and 13, 2010. The show will feature handcrafted gifts and holiday decorations from 20 artists. This is the 5th year for the show to be held at the historic Walker House in Blockhouse Creek, located at 2600 Block House Drive, South in Leander. The hours are: Thursday 10am-9 pm, Friday 9 am – 7 pm Saturday 9 am – 5 pm. Admission is free and in the spirit of community, canned goods will be collected and donated to Hill Country Community Ministries. For more information, please contact Liz at 826-8988.

auStin CuRREntSBCP Hike & Lecture Series

Looking to enjoy the wonderful fall weather with the family? How about a guided hike in some of the most pristine wildland areas around town? The Balcones Canyonlands Preserve (BCP) maintains several of the open spaces you see around Austin, around 27,000 acres in total. These are not parks, they are preserves. Access is limited, and no pets or bicycles or large groups are allowed. As you may be aware, the BCP is not just one single tract of land but a system of preserves that exists as a multi-agency conservation effort with Travis County under the Endangered Species Act through the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service (USFW).

This hike and lecture series is a partnership among several local agencies and organizations that manage land dedicated to the BCP. A hike is offered the 2nd Saturday of every month. The City of Austin is supporting the partnership and this program by handling registration for events on its website. Lectures will be posted on the calendar but do not require registration.

Your field biologist will point out birds, animals, plants, insects and invertebrates. And you may see the habitats of native and non-native plants and animals and you will learn about how they impact

the environment. You might even get lucky and see a turkey vulture, armadillo, grey fox or some roadrunners. The best part is you can ask your guide all the questions you want. This is great for kids and adults too.

Here is the Hike & lecture Series calendar for the fall:Sat. 9/11 9a-11:30a Birding Habitat of Westcave Preserve (Westcave Preserve - easy)Sat. 9/25 1:00p-3:30p Exploring Wild Basin (Wild Basin Wilderness Preserve- easy)Sat. 9/25 9:00a-11:30a Exploring Wild Basin for Kids and Families (Wild Basin Wilderness Preserve- easy)Sat. 10/9 10a-1:00p Rediscover Hamilton Pool (Hamilton Pool Preserve – easy)Sat. 11/13 9a-11:45a A Bird’s Eye View of Stillhouse Hollow (Stillhouse Hollow – easy)

To Register, visit http://www.ci.austin.tx.us/water/wildland/bcphikelectureseries.htm.
