Since the early years of the century the Brighton Speed Trialshave been one of the most popular features in the town's sportingcalendar and is an event anticipated with both pleasure and greatinterest by motor enthusiasts of aJl ages. Each succeeding yearthe trials attract an exciting Jist of entries and I am sure thatthis year will be no exception.
1 offer roy congratulations to the officers and members ofBrighton and Hove Motor Club on the success of their efforts inorganising so important an event. I hope that once again they willbe favoured with a record crowd of spectators and that everyoneconcerned will have a thoroughly enjoyable day,
August, J972 Mayor
THE ORGANISATION OF THE EVENT
To convert what is a normal public road, where traffic wardensdaily collect their new pence and children lick tbeir ice lollies, into atrack safe for speeds up to 200 m.p.h, all in the space of 24 hourstakes an army of Corporation workmen, plus considerable organisation.
By the time one Speed Trial is over, with the results finally completeand awards posted to the successful competitors, it is time to start on thefollowing year's event.
In February or March the main officials are contacted to bookthem for the day. Scrutineers, who are appointed by the R.A.C. toInspect all competing vehicles, are also in short supply. They areusually qualified engineers who, after working closely with otherscrutineers, are promoted to a higher grade. They inspect aU carsto ensure that they have been entered in the correct class and also tbatthey are safe to take part in the event.
A team of timekeepers are organised for the event and, onceagain, these are R.A.C. appointed. Botb they and their equipmentmust be to a high standard. The event is timed by electronic beamsand digital clocks with a guaranteed accuracy to 1/1000 of a sec. Theequipment. worth well over £1,000, is checked at frequent intervals toensure this accuracy. On the Friday before the event the wires con-necting the start and the finish beams have to be installed. Just imaginehow the organisers felt when we found one year that these wires hadbeen cut in 5 different places overnight.
Next on our list are the emergency services-Fire Brigade, Ambu-lance, Doctors. St. Johns are all contacted to arrange for their servicesto be available.
Meanwhile the Regulations for the event are revised and sent toour printers. Other senior officials are contacted at this stage. Bythis time we are in May and over 1,000 copies of the Regulations aresent out to likely entrants. Suitable advance publicity is arranged bypress bulletins and posters. As entries arrive a close scrutiny is kept tha.they have entered in the proper class, etc.
By mid-July a small army of marshals is contacted and appointedto their various duties. A meeting is arranged with the CorporationOfficials to discuss the lay-out of the course. Tickets and armbandsare ordered from the printers; a start is made on the this programme.advertisers are contacted to take space. Caravans and buses for theuse of timekeepers, etc. are arranged.

Then life really becomes hectic. Competitors are numbered and paired, handicaps are worked out. The programme is completed and sent tothe printers. Final Regulations, passes etc. are posted to the competitorswhilst marshals are sent their armbands and instructions. Paddockspaces are allocated and many queries are answered.
On the Friday afternoon before the event Corporation Officialsmake a start on laying out the course. Barriers are put in positionready to close off the Front completely at 6.30 next morning. TODAY'S EVENTS
The Shell Brighton National Speed Trials are back again in theirfull glory. Madeira Drive was completely resurfaced in the spring andthe course is now in first class condition. Given good weather weconfidently expect every Class Record to be broken. Again we welcomethe very popular Dragsters over a quarter of a mile. These will be runsingly at the beginning and the end of the Meeting. These machinesare built with only one purpose in mind., i.e. to cover the quarter milein as short a time as possible. They show a high ingenuity of engineer-ing, as a close inspection in the Paddock will show. Drag racing was firstseen at Brighton Speed Trials in 1962 when the late Sidney Allardattempted the kilometre in his machine. The experiment was repeatedin 1964 with both Mickey Thompson and Dante Duce of America com-ing over to support our event. Unfortunately, these machines werenot geared for the kilometre.
Brighton has always been famed for the kilometre, being the onlycourse in the country over this distance.
Today's entry is certainly not lacking in quality. 1. Williamson, must be favourite for F.T.D. in his Manpower McLaren-but R. Rosein his McLaren may be a surprise winner.
THE MOTORCYCLES
Although there are many sprint courses throughout the country, few can compare with the challenge of the Brigbton Kilometre. Withthe restoration of the kilo distance in 1971 on Madeira Drive, many ofBritain's top sprint and drag racing riders are appearing again thisyear. For some, Brighton is a challenge tbat they cannot resist, whileothers are entering to see just what makes Brighton the speed merchants'mecca.
The Incorporated Sprint Organisation (ISO) are again proud to beco-operating with the Brighton and Hove Motor Club in organisingthe motor-cycle entry. ISO also organise the now famous Chandy /ISO World Records weekend at RAP Elvington, near York, and theBrighton/Kilo is possibly the last opportunity for many riders to testtheir machines over the kilometre distance before this year's WorldRecords Weekend on 30th September/1st October. The Brightoncourse itself presents more than just the challenge of time and speed,as riding ability and handling are at a premium due to the narrownessof the Drive. Also, in the area of the finish line there are severalundulations in the track surface, and it is not uncommon for machinespassing through tbe terminal 'speed trap' to do so in mid-air I
An innovation this year is the provision of a standing-start! miJecourse for the bikes as well as the dragsters (which is organised by theB.D. and H.RA.), in addition to tbe traditional standing-start kilo.
14
This is to accommodate the pure drag-racing motorcycles who raceregularly on i mile drag-strips such as Santa Pod. The engines of thesebikes are very highly stressed, some producing over 150 b.h.p., and willonly withstand runs of 10/12 seconds as opposed to the 20 or so secondsrequired for the kilo distance.
Two fine examples of drag racing bikes will be John Hobb's1000 c.c. machine-Olympus II-this is virtually a doubled-up versionof his World Record holding 5OOc.c.supercharged Triumph, and his newmachine possesses not only two twin-cylinder Triumph engines, buteach engine has its own individual supercharger and separate fuel-injection system, and is estimated to develop a shattering 200 bhp! This is a 1972 machine, and is still very much in the development stage, but is already consistently running below 10 seconds in the i mile.Another big drag racing machine is 'Pegasus', Vincent-powered alsosupercharged, and superbly prepared. 'Pegasus' is owned and riddenby three enthusiasts, Mick Butler (who at this meeting will be ridinghis own 500 c.c. Norton over the kilo), Dereck Chinn and Ian Mes-senger. We must wait and see who actually has the i mile ride today,as these three lads share the expenses and the rides.
Among the kilo contenders this year are Don East. winner of the"Dolphin Trophy" last year. Don comes from Greenwich, in SouthEast London, and is a regular World Records contender. His machine'Quasirnodo' is a blown 750 Triumph, and must be one of the mostspartan machines going. In the 500 c.c. class is another Brightonregular, John Camni, who can cover the distance in a very quick 20seconds with terminal speeds in the 140 m.p.h. bracket on his blown500 Triumph. And there is a really wide range of other machines, ranging from the 1928 250 c.c. Rex Acme, ridden by Chris Percival andowned and entered by Bert Snashall, through the racing and sprintmachines, up to the very latest Standard Production 'superbikes', suchas the huge Italian Laverda 750 twin. There will undoubtedly be someon-course rivalry among the beautiful vintage machines. Dick Knight ispresent with his Brough-Superior, often called the Rolls Royce ofmotorcycles, and his machine has many links with the history of theBrighton Speed Trials. There will be two Douglas machines present-those of Ken Halls and the ex-Brook lands machine of Doc Bayley /Len Cole, this latter ridden today by Phil Manzano, the sprint and drag-racing columnist of Motor Cycle News.
Finally, no story of motorcycle sprinting would be complete with-out mention of that doyen of record-breakers, George Brown, still holderof the outright solo course record over the Brighton kilo, and also holderof many world records. Although George win not be competing todayhe will be presenting a special George Brown/ISO Trophy to any riderwho can break his own course record.
ISO hope that everyone will enjoy this years' Speed Trial, andespecially, the entertainment and excitement that we are sure themotorcycles will provide.

A BRIEF mSTORY OF DRAG RACING IN ENGLAND
A small group of enthusiasts first got the bug from American carmagazines and formed the British Hot Rod Association and startedholding small meetings on lonely airfields. Our late President, SydneyAllard built the first American-style dragsters and in 1963 a challengeseries against an American car "Mooneyes" was organised. Thelengendary Mickey Thompson also turned up and one of the appear-ances was here at Brighton.
Following the success of these races, two festivals of drag racing, with several American vehicles present, were held in 64 and 65. Un-fortunately, rain made the 65 one a financial disaster, and the clubformed to run them, the British Drag Racing Association, was amal-gamated into the B.H.R.A. to form today's leading club, the BritishDrag Racing and Hot Rod Association.
Another milestone was the opening of Britain's first permanentstrip--Santa Pod near Bedford, in 1966. It was resurfaced in 1968and has since improved in lay-out and facilities until today it can matchall but the very best American strips. Meanwhile the sport grewsteadily and the cars and bikes got more numerous and faster. TheB.D.R. & H.R.A. has now held two very successful International meet-ings, and they hope to lure the Americans back in a couple of years'time.
In 1970, a new club, the N.D.R.C. was formed, and it can only bea matter of time before a second permanent strip is opened.
The cars and bikes you will see today are among tbe best in thecountry, and, in fact, the two big dragsters of Skilton and Priddleare the fastest in the world outside America-both having done 7.3second i miles at over 200 m.p.h. Skilton, in fact, holds the worldrecord over two directions for the t mile.
Most of these vehicles can be seen at any meeting at Santa Podthroughout the season and if you would like to know more about thesport the Association's General Secretary on 01-369 2103 will be ableto help you; or you can speak to any of the drag racers in the Paddocktoday.
